In the us yes but not worldwide it absolutely sucks in India

100% agreed. Google maps is still the better maps app. But Apple has some unique features and there is a lot of progress to catchup lately
@yellowwinner1Ай бұрын
As someone in a major city in the US, it fucking sucks 😅 Primary issue is simply taking too long to update. I live in the midwest where factories and warehouses open up every week and for Google Maps it usually only takes about a week to be instated, or at the very least have the building and address available to navigate to. Meanwhile on Apple Maps it can take months, not even mentioning construction both in the sense of keeping up with updates and new road configs. Apple Maps is pretty but fails in actual navigation.

Apple maps : pretty Google maps : practical google maps is really good for folks who use intercity public transport in india. plus it works on every gadget regardless of the OS.

Google Maps is still the overall better map app, no disagreement there.

as someone who is from the US, most of the features you showed only apply to large select cities, all those road markings and 3d views are in very specific locations and in any other place its outdated compared to google. The overall purpose of maps is for navigation in which Apple is super far behind. It will seriously get you lost or taking large detours which is why no one actually uses it. Google Maps collects user data, you can turn if off too, but it results in super accurate reviews, trip planning with all the traffic, construction, cops, just key stuff you need that makes it a good app. Otherwise the video format is good for a channel of your size, maybe compare more apps like new siri and google gemini

I just want to bring some equillibrium to this conversation in some form: but Google Maps gets it wrong too. There have been plenty of times on US roadtrips where my friends and I have been using Google Maps (at their persistence) and it will be topsy turvy and confused. And in those same areas, Apple Maps operates just fine. I do think AM has caught up significantly (at least in the US). The Share ETA feature in Apple Maps is nice too, for following along with friends.

Really glad you gave your perspective here. I was trying to bring the same idea. Google maps is not bad. But there are other apps which has their own unique proposition

As a researcher that has been using GIS based tools for a few decades I was always mystified by the “more accurate map” narrative. My testing, on a global basis, has always yielded results that are so error ridden compared to other sources I never bought the populist narrative.

When I first got an iPhone I was really excited to try Apple Maps, but I can't say I've stuck with it. While it's definitely the prettier app, Google Maps has much better accuracy which is what really matters to me as a driver for work. A couple notes though, on your second point you show how AMaps shows the road layout when zoomed in, but the thing is GMaps also shows the road layout when you're actually driving, showing you which lane you are supposed to be in. I've also noticed that unlike AMaps, GMaps gives quite a bit of foresight, like if you're getting off on an exit with two right turning lanes and you need to take the next left after, GMaps will tell you to be in the left-right turning lane so you won't have to suddenly cross traffic. Also on 1:54 you described GMaps as being not getting a sense of layout, but in your footage GMaps showed you a second floor when AMaps didn't, which is ironic given the part after. You mentioned notes, but Google not only has labels, which are similar, but also has lists which arguably do a better job anyway as they show up on your map even when zoomed out letting you create your own curated map. Lastly I wanted to point out your claims on privacy. I understand that a lot of people trust Apple more than any other company, but there isn't any real proof of what Apple is or isn't doing with your data. On top of that, again as your footage shows at 6:42, everything you mentioned about Google can be turned off. You don't want Google to give your personalized ads, you can turn it off. It isn't some secret setting either, Google asks you these things when you first sign up to a Google account and then asks you again when you first open GMaps. Even your argument about "on-device vs Google servers" isn't necessarily true as Apple also has to pull data from it's server and for GMaps you can download your area as an offline map and it'll work without any data. You can even disable traffic updates and use without an account if you want true full anonymity.

The video felt so forced. As if you are just trying so hard to find flaws with Gmaps. I guess no matter what happens you'll still call GMaps "more cluttered" 😄 The least that was expected was explaining why you think its more cluttered? Using just generic terms like "there is a lot going on here", "honestly I dont know what to focus on here" when the apps were showing exactly the same information at pretty much the same locations on the UI. Also some of the info is plain wrong? Seattle has 3D satellite view on GMaps as well? I can see it sitting around the world. You turned it off and you say its not available? About Street view, Google started ages ago, so obviously some images will be older and "look like it was taken on a camera from the 2000s", just like any other typical Apple fan, you decided only what "looks better" is better. Agree about the trail features. Privacy, while Google is not the king, how did you arrive at the conclusion that only Apple anonymizes user data? Do you have any proof that others dont do? This kind of unsubstantiated claims should be avoided if you cant back it up. And as far as the products themselves, I implore you to check just how much more info you can get from a place from using GMaps vs Apple maps. Also both products have excellent coverage in big cities but just move away and you'll realize how much more powerful GMaps actually is. Its unbeatable in the crowdsourced data space. Within cities its amazing for public transport giving yuo better options than most other mapping products. For restaurants, GMaps has far far more options to see the actual menu with pics and sometimes prices. For most other places it recognizes actual food pics so you can make a decision. Tell me how many such actually useful features are in Apple Maps other than "looks so clean and minimalistic". Your video feels like just an effort to show Apple is better with practically zero research and zero knowledge.

Thanks for the long and descriptive comment. My point of the video was not to tell Apple Maps is better than Google maps, which is not. It’s to showcase the areas where Apple Maps does it better than Google maps, personally.

The only way Apple Maps can beat Google is allowing the app to be installed on other platforms like Apple Music.
