I don't get why some in-laws feel the need to act like this towards the person their relative married. It's fine if you don't like them, but you should at least try being civil to them.

one thing you may be sure of--the controlling behavior did not start with the DIL. People like this get away with their toxic ways for years...until they meet that one person who doesn't put up with their ways. The fall always seems sudden, but more often than not, it is years in the making. This is why one must really get to know a future spouse, their family, and their friends--after all, people are the sum of the 5 people they are closest to.

My uncle’s wife was welcomed but early on she actually told our family that we were low class because we served food on the countertop for people to serve themselves. Meanwhile, her family came from the same socioeconomic background, race, and religion as ours, and our family was better educated! That was only then beginning of her selfishness. We smile in her face now and keep her at arms length. I suppose she likes that just fine.

Lol I am 6 years older than my husband of 47 years. He did the chasing. I tried to run away, not wanting to get married! He would not go any where. I even tried to get him to date females his own age, in the suburb I lived. But nope he would not leave me. After a year, one day, I was not well and had had a bad night, he asked me tom arry him. I replied "anything to shut up!" Nest month onthe 10th November he asked me what I was wearing out on the Saturday, I asked him if we were going somewhere special. He said yes, I asked where, He said "Oh to our wedding." I think I went into shock for a few days until I was actually at the wedding hall. Even though I asked to be taken home, I ended up married. I have never regretted it.

Okay, Andrews mom abandoned her in the middle of the woods where there are "bears" and other lethal things, without a way to get home, and she was not brought up on charges, apparently forgiven outright? Then, for awhile, she continued to live with MIL before they moved out, despite her continually berating DIL? Wow. She has more patience than me.

What an incredible person the young wife/DIL is as both a family member & entrepreneur . I had a few troublesome incidents with my MIL while I was married, but on the whole, I loved her & visa versa. It turns out, our prob was her son (my then hubby) with a number of his whopping lies, caused more probs than just between he & I. I try hard not to hold grudges (esp. w/people I love) & thankfully she & I fixed things (& usually pretty quickly). I honestly only know one woman like this, and I have been blessed to be her friend since we were children. I’m sure there have been some we grew up with who’ve made attempts to take advantage of her, but she is quite sharp & is capable of tending to such people & the rest of us who love her have been effective dealing with the remaining attempted leaches.

Well, despite wedding vows being a thing, some families are made out of either money and power or just straight up financial based deals across companies, like how kings and queens were made by trading here to the thrones between kingdoms back in the day. I guess in this case, she wanted to stay at the top of the pecking order, likely against her sons and husband's wishes as a family. That much would explain why all the guys sorta cut ties with MiL instead of MC. Can't believe that vanity and greed can corrupt something as sacred as a marriage tho, but I guess we all aren't as strong as we let on, huh???

OP should have told her husband instead of lying to him until things fell apart with her FIL & MIL's marriage. I know she didn't want to make things worse but Andrew deserves to know especially since he's her husband & felt hurt by not being informed earlier. Robin destroyed her life herself & is just a bitter woman that thinks her DIL is a liar that's scheming against her. Now that things have fallen apart she expects the DIL she's tried to chase off to fix everything as if it's not Robin's fault. Something tells me despite OP being fine with everyone eventually letting Robin back into their lives eventually Robin isn't getting another chance & has lost her family for good. Robin will never get to meet her grandchild nor see/talk to her family again. Her husband is probably going to eventually want a divorce & Robin will be alone. I also get the feeling her friend that helped OP get home his going to cut ties with Robin as well.

So happy that nana's response to mama was loving her new baby girl within 5 minutes of meeting her. She was perfectly happy to take her home immediately as papa was literally barely able to makeit to the wedding between his navy schedule. He had to set leave the day after. He came back to a heavily pregnant wife (honeymoon souviner so to speak, no pervert was going near with nana guarding her like dragon on gold) and his mom having installed a shiny new spine on said wife to use in him if got stupid. Nana loved both of them equally, but still made sure papa knew he wasn't too old to go over her knee if he upset mama. Mama's family was perfectly happy to adopt papa as their own too. Nana and Granny even ended up friends for the rest of their lives.

This is what happens when you procreate not to bring new life into the world, but to have someone who worships you and depends on you. MIL doesn't see her sons as people, they're her property who are meant to follow her around like baby ducks and cater to her every whim. I'll bet she was reluctant to teach them to walk, use the potty or tie their shoes, because these are all steps toward independence, and if her kids gained independence, what's their point in existing.

My maternal grandmother had a nasty MIL who kept going on at her for not having a son (my uncle was #6 of their 7 children), but Grandma was so glad when WWII broke out and my uncle was too young to go. We were an Air Force family and stationed far away from Granny, but my dad told me that she (a fundamentalist Protestant), told him he was going to Hell for marrying a Catholic. I think it was a judgement on her that the last time we saw her (after her stroke), she didn't know her son or her grandchildren, only her DIL.

If these stories are true it amazes me how many MIL hang onto their sons like harpy’s, they should realise that their son has chosen who they want to be with and back off. The son should also stick up for his wife more, and stop being a wimp.

The dil isn't a catering service so rude. I'd never stay over there.

I don't get along with my mother-in-law. I don't know why. She's just always been very cold to me. But fine with me. I just avoid her.

Wow. Robin is the most hateful woman ever to exist on the planet. I feel sorry for Andrew and his brother Daniel including the wife of Andrew. My dad’s dear friend happened to be a nurse before she lost her husband to Alzheimer’s and who then died of cancer in the year after. She has two sons who’s one being a friend of my brother, one of them worked as a paramedic and a physician as well. His wife also happened to be a nurse, too.

Hey Robin, wife doesn't mean slave. Andy your mother may be family but, but that doesn't mean you should do everything she tells you most people if their partner was just abandoned in the mountains they would go and get them or ask their mum why the hell they did it and if they are insane
