If any partner ever says "permission" or "know your place" I'm gone like immediately. But if they skip my parent's funeral, I'm getting family to move me out that night.

Sadly my ex did that. He said he had to work but let me attend my mother's memorial. He even did not attend my graduation but his mother and step-dad did. My stepmother, sister came though. It is okay cause my mother inlaw and Father inlaw was so proud of me. I proved also that you can complete school. His second wife kept changing degrees and with his alcoholic behavior she divorced him. I was wife number 3. I wonder if he is on to wife number 4. I am so glad though I don't have to deal with him anymore. Now engaged to someone else. I don't put up with any belittling either. I put my fiancée one time in his place. He was trying to say I could not do certain things we worked at one time for same company. Before I even got married to first husband taking classes at college or getting a certificate in different things are beneficial cause now a days women don't need to be dependant on a man. And men can learn to cook and clean

My ex didn't want me to go to my mother's when my father died. All because his birthday was more then a week away. He wanted me to stay home so that I could take him out, in his words, for an expensive dinner and then let him buy a model that cost 200.00 as his present, instead of going to my Father's funeral. Guess who lost that little battle. Note that I said EX.

My husband and my brother-in-law were the ones to pick the nice urn for our Dad. My sister, mother and I were discussing the arrangements and they took it upon themselves to pick an urn with a US Navy crest. Dad was proud of his service. And his sons-in-law knew that. This slob would catch it hot from my family. Both sides.

I lost my mother in 2014. My husband was right there. He watched the kids & fed everyone. Hospice called us in on Monday and said it was time. Everyone thought she would only live another day or two tops. Mom, being the stubborn woman she always was, hung on until 5AM on Friday morning. That week, I never left her bedside. My husband was my rock. He made sure everyone that was there to see her had food, drinks or whatever was needed. He brought me clean clothes & toiletries. He kept the kids busy and comforted them when I couldn't. I will always remember how supportive he was, not only to me, but everyone in my family. I love that man with all my heart ❤️

Unfortunately, it's a very common attitude in some places. There's places where it is actually illegal for a woman to leave her house without permission. In some places she isn't allowed to leave the house unless she is accompanied by an adult, male relative. Women are living this every day, but without the possibility of escape. Especially in the places where it's also considered a bad thing to educate girls. Imagine being in this woman's shoes but instead of a degree in engineering to fall back on, you're illiterate. Regardless of the names and locations used in the video, the original situation this was inspired by probably happened in a place where women are commonly treated like property and possibly don't have any rights. Or at least not the same rights as the men.

There's a trend in these stories where a guy asks their wife to quit their job, then talk down to them for being a housewife. It makes me wonder if a guy wanting to be the sole breadwinner of the family should be considered a red flag IRL, or if that's just a plot device in these stories.

Initially, the concept of machismo was equivalent to the concept of chivalry. Somewhere along the way, something went wrong and it became completely corroded. As a result, it has been replaced by a new term: “hombría”. Nowadays, the term “machismo” has a negative connotation and is by no means a trait to be proud of.

What's the deal with people who want their partners to be staying at home, taking care of the cooking, cleaning and so on, even though they were independent before, yet once they accept that task and fulfill that role, the house partner is looked at like some parasite who leeches on said "bread-winner". I believe him when he said he'd change...for a week or two. Even then he'd slip and apologize. But eventually he'd go right back to the way he was before. He would try to change but wouldn't last. He doesn't really want a wife. He wants a slave. A servant/sex partner. Someone to satisfy both his needs. His household needs and his bedroom needs. He wants a servant that when he says jump they start jumping before asking how high. Ones who will bow down and kiss his ass, then kiss his feet.

People do not always recognize verbal and mental abuse for what it is. If you're a SAHW, especially if you have children, by the time you realize what's going on, you may be afraid to leave. You're worried about making it on your own. You're worried about the affect on your children. You may even convince yourself that it's not that bad, after all, they've never hit you. If you've been raised in a religious household, that can only make it worse.

@little1942
@little1942 Жыл бұрын
Most relationships don’t start out that way. There’s a cycle that takes place in abusive relationships that plays out over and over. There’s the honeymoon period, where it’s all sunshine and roses. The person is loving and attentive. Then there’s a build up of tension over a period of time followed by a paroxysm that results abusive behavior (either physical or mental or both). Finally the remorse and sincere “apology” and then the honeymoon period starts all over and everything is wonderful again. The build up initially takes place over long periods, so it can be difficult to miss the patterns at first and the victim has hope that “he can change” because it only happens when he’s “stressed”. Eventually, the whole cycle happens faster and faster, until the abuser drops all pretense of apology or of trying to “make nice”. By that time, the victim’s psyche is broken down and has no clue “how” to get out of it. They’re just trying to “keep the peace”. It’s incredibly confusing when you are in it, especially when there are kids. It often takes something major to help the victim realize, “he” really isn’t going to change and I better get out of this quick. Unfortunately, too many of the victims don’t get out alive. This happens a lot when a narcissistic person finds himself an “empath” (a caring person with a high level of empathy and wants to help others.). Keep in mind, these people are highly manipulative and consummate actors. Abusive relationships are a lot like the analogy of the frog and the pot of boiling water. If you put a frog directly into a pot of boiling water, he immediately jumps right out. But if the frog is in a pot of cool water and you slowly turn up the heat, the frog will stay right there and boil to death. It’s easier to see from the outside because your not in the pot and can see the flames going higher. I swore I would kill any man that tried to treat me that way. I still barely escaped my first marriage. The man I left was completely unrecognizable from the man I married. Even his mother couldn’t believe the change in him. I am still considered family to my former in-laws and they have welcomed my current husband into the family.

The husband is the type of JackA** that if they had a child, he’d probably be butt hurt that his wife is “paying more attention” to the baby by breastfeeding them. I could see OP’s husband screaming “why are you feeding them” before making my dinner. Recently my mother passed away due to complications from Covid-19 and I can say even though my husband didn’t really help with her service he sure didn’t complain about the time and attention it took me. As others have said if my husband was anything like OP’s husband he’d find himself in his own hole if he spoke to me like that, I’d have no problem telling the judge that I was driven to it due to my grief.(also don’t think anyone would blame me for it either).

The similarties between this cretin and my ex husband are uncanny. He always told me I would be nothing and not able to live without him in my life. He was a better father than I was a mother, a better cook etc. Put simply he was an (alcohol fuelled) abusive bully like the cretin in this story. Never remembering what he had done to upset anyone come the morning, but always promising he would change etc only to flush that promise down the toilet a day or so later. When my mother died all he was concerned about was how much money he was going to get, and when my brother explained there was no money, just memories which are more precious than money can buy. The result was my ex husband caused a great scene at the wake and it wasn't the first time he had caused a scene at a family event. At the wedding of his niece he got into a fight with his brother and ended up getting arrested I had gone home long before then as I could see there was trouble brewing. In the end I finally found the courage from somewhere, to walk away and build a far better life without him. His life however ended up right in the gutter, he lost parental custody and visitation to his children due to assualting a social worker and a court official in the court room. He turned to drugs and created no end of problems with his neighbours and finally ended up going to jail for drink and drug offences, but nothing changed he continued his drink and drug rampages when he was released from jail. Finally he collapsed in the street with alcoholic poisoning and was in hospital for a month, when he left hospital with the promise to his doctors he would change, and attend AA meetings etc, yeah yeah, same old, same old. The first thing he did was to go out and buy a bottle of scotch. It didn't do him any good as he died later that night. As for me, well I became freelance writer and in time met a wonderful caring man, who despite being a dinosaur (My pet name for him) whom my kids and I love with all our hearts. I am glad that Mary found the courage to leave her abusive marriage, and I will say this to all woman and men who are suffering at the hands of an abusive bully. Walk away you dont need him/her, there is life beyond abuse you are NOT alone.

This 1950s approach to relationships is a strong theme through most of these texts. Are these truly a reflection of attitudes today? Never once do any of the bullied underdog wives ever put to their abusive husbands how much they would have to pay, for example, is they wanted a housekeeper to clean, cater for and maintain their home. That’s without even taken any similar calculations into account if there were children in the house hold!
