As far as I have known about women who have self-respect, dignity, honor, integrity, uprightness, ethics, morals, and social etiquette, would have dumped Ryan on the spot, when he supported and justified his female friend's cheating debacle. The protagonist of the story seems to carry all of the positive traits mentioned above and even more. People like Ryan trying to control or dominate a wife like the protagonist is like asking for a death wish and destruction. People with protagonist's character traits don't take these issues lightly, and will not hesitate to punish and abandon, when people try to take advantage of them against their wish and decision. Threatening them will not harm them one bit, but it will come back to bite you in your butt very soon. They are somebody, who will not burn themselves to keep you warm, to be more precise, they will never become a spineless doormat to anybody, doesn't matter who you are.

Actually neither sounds like true blackmail, it can be argued that one was merely stating a cause and effect scenario in both cases, divorce would be the effect of the cause being refusing to let the ap live there, alternately, one can see how bad blood would make for bad business, so stopping any deals would be the effect, neither are blackmail
