This takes me back. I was working at Apple when this model premiered and was one of the lucky few call center reps that was given one to WORK ON. This and the followup FW800 model were beauties.

Indeed. I was working @ Sony writing the sound editor developer tool for Playstation 2 on the previous model, the Graphite G4. The 800MHz Quicksilver was the best G4 ever made. Wish I still had one. I have a mint graphite, but not a Quicksilver.

I worked as a PC technician at a small computer store in the late 90s and those were the worst to fix. I had one that was from a heavy cigar smoker and the poor machine had a thick carpet of sticky brown dust in it. It was so disgusting.

A few years ago I stumbled across an exact duplicate of this machine in a pawn shop with a graphics card that wasn't working. I took it home and upgraded the card to get the machine running and imagine my surprise to find that it had an OWC processor upgrade to 1.2 ghz.

@@SkynetCyb I got very lucky. I went to buy it and asked them if they would test it and show me it booted. They had it in their sheet for 40 bucks. It came up but the graphics card was obviously shot as the screen was a garbled mess. I told them I’d buy it for the going rate of the case itself and they said sure. I paid ten bucks for it and carried it out pretty sure I could fix it. I got an agp 9600 based card off eBay for reasonably cheap (40 ish bucks) and with a bit of tape marked off the pins needed to get it working in the machine. Then it booted right up. It used to be in someone’s sound studio cause it had an expensive proprietary sound board in it. Replaced the hard drive with something a bit faster (it doesn’t have SATA so only so fast the drive can read). Installed some old games like halo and went to town.

I was almost in tears when I first got my MDD dual 1.25 G4, as I wrapped my arms around it. It was my first "Pro" Mac and what a beast it was. It smoked my 2008 MBP Core 2 Duo that I got to replace it. These old G4 towers were beautiful in design, power and expandability.

Same! In 2003 I think. Back when Apple was still good. The store-owner drove the computer (Single 1.25Ghz) to my home in his private car and the computer still works. I still keep it as a memoir because the store owner died shortly afterwards. He was in his 60s long before that, when I first met him. This was in Germany.

Yes there was, this one he has is a series 2. The series 1 was a Blue & White G3 case but on grey, and the 3 had diferente speaker layout

It's definitely the most aesthetically pleasing in my opinion, but I do believe the Graphite case to be more serviceable. Getting the optical drive bracket in and out is a pain.

I used to have this exact model back in like 2009. I really enjoyed playing with OS X Leopard, and it taught me a lot about PPC Macs. I'm now motivated to buy another one.

Great mac; my favorite was the mirrored door G4. I had 3 of them, and had a small render farm for my 3D work back in the day. Back when Apple would truly innovate and change the world with their designs and builds. I miss the old Apple Computer to be honest, and the whole community around mods, support, expansion cards, CPU upgrades and more.

I actually own one of those and I have upgraded it to its limits basically, I use it to run leopard and work on backporting hackintosh drivers to power pc macs, so far I have been able to get several sound cards working under leopard in this way

I'm still using my 2001 QuickSilver Mac. Upgraded to a Dual 1.8Ghz G4 CPU board, FW-800 & USB2 PCI Cards, and an Nvidia Graphics upgrade. It works great as a video converter using a canopus ADVC-110 box over FW-400. Still trying to figure out a PCI card for moving to SATA Disks.

Still have my Quicksilver 733 MHz machine that I bought in August 2001. Hard to believe it's 20 years ago. Pulled it out of storage a couple of years ago to access an old Exabyte tape drive -- still works.

I know right the Apple pro mouse is my favorite mouse Apple released I use as my main mouse for my M1 MacBook Air. I like it better than the current Magic Mouse

@@aalvarez1033 the Pro Mouse looks the best, especially when you see the red glow through the case in the dark. From usability I like the Mighty Mouse the best, at least when the ball works. Same case ergonomics as the Pro Mouse but with scrolling in all directions too. I still miss that scroll ball when scrolling around big pictures zoomed in in Photoshop, or scrolling through timelines in video or audio editors. Holding shift and doing a vertical scroll just isn’t the same. And trackpads on a desktop are just a Nope for me. (But I use a SteelSeries Sensei nowadays, not a Mighty or Pro Mouse.) Do the newer versions of OSX (I guess macOS now) still show the older style settings panel for choosing what the side buttons do when it detects the Pro Mouse? I hope so.

That wire is likely replacing a broken trace on the motherboard also the IDE drives do perform worse if they're both in use while sharing a single parallel cable in primary/secondary config like that but not a great deal though

I had a G4, Blue on the front, the Cinema Studio Display and the "Cheesegrater" unit, speakers, mouse and keyboard. It ran 10.0/10.1 "Aqua Interface" I loved that! The DVD drive was great and USB connections. Excellent!

I went for a PC around this time because of my school but I still had one of those early DVD burners. They were such a pain in the ass and only 2.4x on a good day. I was so mad a year later when I bought a 16x drive at Walmart for less than $100!

I used to have a 733 Mhz just like this: the display, the speakers, Superdrive, the machine itself. It was very expensive and did not have a lot of memory. Later I bought some memory as well as a USB 2 card. I used it for about 5 or 6 years before giving it to my father in law (I got myself a white Intel iMac 24” as replacement). My main complaint about the PowerMac was the incredible noise that it was making. It’s international nickname was The Windtunnel.

It’s an old trick for an old machine I love these machines the sad thing is now their price tag is insane for a good one in great condition is damn near $400 and you have to realize these machines are stuck on macOS 10.5 being the last supported version for power PC but there is some good news there are web browsers available For PowerPC Macintoshes so that you can still access the Internet on these old machines but you cannot watch KZbin or access Facebook or access Twitter these web browsers are not designed for social media

Don't overestimate 'accessing' tho. My top-end PPC Macs are a Dual G4/1.4Ghz and a Dual G5/2Ghz and they're not much faster than this.

Man that thing was one of my first real computers, I used this and a 2002 Sony VAIO until 2016 when I built my current PC. I still have it set up with an OS 9 and Tiger dual boot.

I managed to get a hold of a Dual 1Ghz MDD G4 in the summer for $50. Pretty happy with my find because its one of the fastest machines that can still run OS 9, which is what I was actually looking for, since I still have all of my old retro mac games from the beige powermac days.

I have one of these with the Sonnet Encore 1.8GHz CPU upgrade. It makes the computer a touch faster in tenfourfox, but it’s still super slow. That, and the upgrade kit came with a little fan to cool the G4 that makes the system even louder. But it’s still cool to have a rare upgrade like that.

I haven't used TFF much, but it always seemed very slow to me. Give Leopard WebKit or Camino G4 a go - they're fine for leisurely browsing.

Agreed. the G3, G4, and G5 Mac/Mac Pro desktops like these do have a really cool design, and pose an interesting challenge to rebuild with modern hardware inside. Though rather than an Intel Hackintosh in one of these, an M1 would easily be able to be added in (like some do with the old Mac cube models)

My Pioneer DVD-RW drive used to have a fan. It was a DVR-104 if memory serves. I also saw it on some older SCSI CD Burners.

I had 2 of these that my uncle gave me when I was like 14, I combined them both together into my own creation and used it with Mac OS 10.4, great computers. I can hear the cpu noise as if it were yesterday lol. I ended up donating them to Goodwill thrift store because they took up so much space after a couple years. I wish I'd kept one now. I had a GeForce 2 and 3 card with them also. and one had 3 Gb of RAM lol

You might consider Novus 123 for a polishing system. I have had great luck removing even deep scratches from CD Jewel Cases. Nice video.

These old systems are awesome.. Such a shame you can't pop open an Imac in 2021 and just add things! Also love you own a Sony Z1.. I used to but sadly the heads died after many years of service... 1100 hours as I recall, though the main camera still worked fine so sold off on ebay.. With any luck this Imac will still work 10 years from now then you can do an updated 30 years later video haha..

I used the studio display + a PowerMac G5 way back. What I remember the most is that the display never gave me eye fatigue even after hours and hours of use everyday! It was so comfortable (can you say a display is “comfortable”? 😂)
