Apple SideCar vs Universal Control - What are the differences?

Apple SideCar and Universal Control both allow you control your mac and iPad together with the same mouse and keyboard. However there are a few key differences. So what are the actual differences between sidecar and universal control?

I use both sidecar and universal control with my MacBook Pro for Logic Pro and Final Cut. I got a second iPad I liked them so much. In Logic I use the universal control with Logic remote and sidecar for my movie frame. In Final Cut there’s a great switch to put your browser, timeline or viewer on sidecar.

Tbh when sidecar fist came out i thought it would be a game changer but in reality i never actually used it. Universal control on the other-hand i use use a fair bit, at least so far

I used universal control yesterday for the first time, but I thought I did something in options to make it happen. 😆 I disagree that a touch-screen laptop would be useless. A complete fold-back of the screen and detachable keyboard with Mac OS would be ideal. I don’t want to draw on my iPad but use a laptop as the bigger screen, because I can’t look at the laptop screen when drawing. I need to see where my pencil is touching. That would be the same with any touch-screen apps like Goodnotes with handwriting as well.

Hello, I use my Macbook M1 Air + iPad 2021 as extension display. Unfortunately, from time to time I lost connection and it all gets very laggy or disconnects completely. This happens especially after I let the devices to go into the "sleep mode" - after a display turns off when letting it couple of minutes unoccupied. Any advices? Or is it "normal"?

I tried universal control and it was basically unusable. There was a large delay and it seemed like the accuracy of the mouse just wasnt being translated to the ipad.

You don't even have to do all of this if the ipad is far away. Say, copy an item on your Mac & then walk over to you ipad to paste.

But I want to use my iPad and pen and iPad apps while in zoom while I’m using my MacBook Pro. Some on line companies want a pc not iPad so I need this. I just found out iPads apps aren’t all used on MacBooks. Go figure . Any ideas here?

Unless I am mistaken neither sidecar nor universal control acts like a Wacom whereby you use the iPad as a trackpad to control the Mac and have the ability to switch desktops with a click of the pen as you can a Wacom and control the cursor on the Mac via touch or the pen via the iPad screen. If Apple ever provide this feature It would help me ditch my Cintiq.

Dose anyone have wireless sidecar on iPad frozen every one or two days and restarting iPad stops freezing temporarily? Should sidecar work in clamshell mode?

exactly my case. Also, when I let any device go into a sleep mode, it never refreshes automatically. have you resolved the issue?

@@HashashiyyinDex I’ve contacted Apple Support multiple times since almost a year and every time they just stop responding eventually. I even went to an Apple Store and two of the employees there told me they also experience sidecar freeze, but a friend says he never had a problem.

Macboom m1 ventura ‘ ipad pro 10.5 16.2 sidecar crashes on ipad evey 5 sec droping wifi.. universal control working with no problems. Befor ios16 updete all was fine

Hi Scott, loved your video! I have a quick question about sidecar, if you'd do me the honor of a response. When using the iPad as an external display for the MacBook, is the MacBook doing all the work, or is the iPad contributing any computing power? I was just curious if there would be any performance benefit to using the iPad as an external display, as opposed to a normal display.

All the work is done by the MacBook. The iPad is literally just used as a display. Universal control is different and allows the iPad to be used as an iPad
