I got a new laptop but I still use my pro occasionally for heavier workloads (not often now) but my mom who is an architect uses it as well now (heavily and daily) and I expect it will live another 5 years. It’s a tough laptop lol. The man told me when I first got the pro it would last at least 8 years and they weren’t kidding. I had MacBook Pro 2011, and I was just closing the lead down, until I realised that MacBook stays on and gets really warm in sleep mode, and it was happening time to time and sometimes completely discharging the battery. After sometime I started getting some artefacts and vertical lines on the screen, then mac started to freeze quiet frequently. I took it to Apple, and my model apparently had GPU related defect, so they fixed it for free (even the warranty was expired). Maybe I’m a bit paranoid but i was always shutting down all my future MacBooks after what happened.

WIth desktop Macs you can control whether it does tasks in its sleep. In System Preferences > Energy Saver, if you switch off "Prevent your Mac from automatically sleeping", "Wake for network access", and "Enable Power Nap", then it won't wake itself up. I use this on my iMac as it's in my bedroom and I don't want it spinning up the external disk while I'm trying to sleep! The first two of these options are also available on my 14" M1 Macbook Pro (under "Battery" rather than "Energy Saver") but Power Nap isn't - I don't know for sure but I suspect it's because they simply don't have Power Nap mode anyway, so hopefully just switching those two options off will suffice to make sleep mean sleep.

This was fascinating but also confusing for someone (Me!) who is not a computer dynamo and also brand new to owning a Mac laptop. Did I understand you correctly as follows: The difference between keeping a “powered-up” Mac in Sleep Mode v. Clamshell Mode when user closes cover is whether external charger is attached? Clamshell with power cord plugged in, sleep without IOW? And although you touched on this, what about battery usage when a Mac is in Sleep Mode? For example, if user placed Mac into Sleep Mode at 6:00 pm, (closing computer) and reactivates at 9:00 am the next morning, that’s 15 hours of Sleep Mode, with the computer not being charged that entire time. The MacBook Pro M2 can handle this? The gist of your video that I took away was that this is the state you recommend keeping a Mac in when not using, so wanted to make sure I didn’t misunderstand you. A much more difficult problem is keeping a charging/power cord or any other cord attached to unit without my cats eating all cords in sight. They’re specialists in it.

Terribly wrong. MacBooks have tons of memory leak issues and cannot stay up for long periods of time, EVERY single OS benefits from periodic restarts. Specially when you're low on RAM. On an M1 MacbookAir 8gb 256gb model, after 1-3 days of use, idle RAM consumption is at ~65% even with all the apps closed! If you restart it, idle consumption will go down to low 30's or 40's... No system gets hurt from restarting, there is no strain on the components on startup. Specially on macs. Please test your claims before you give advice, other than that, great video.
@DavidKrcek2 жыл бұрын
Sorry that's BS, what do you think big server farms are doing wrong, when just restarted for updates? Memory Leaks can happen, because no software is perfect, but it's not a build in feature to restart your system regularly. My systems runs often for weeks or sometime for months.
@Chukonu52 жыл бұрын
High RAM usage isn’t always a bad thing. Operating systems are designed to use extra RAM if it is available for speed purposes. For example, you could have two MacBook Pro‘s, one with 16 GB of RAM and one with 32 GB of RAM. They’re running the same apps but the one with 32 GB of RAM will likely have higher ram usage due to the OS keeping more things in memory. The only time you need to restart your computer is if you see a problem. All my MacBooks have very long uptime.
@ghost-user5592 жыл бұрын
No. I literally leave my MacBook in sleep mode and wake it up when I use it for 6 months or more of uptime. Ram usage is totally fine. I rarely reset or shut down unless I have to for updates. Other OS are significantly worse and I MUST reset or shutdown my Windows machine constantly. I have never had to on MacOS in a decade of using my machine. I can go literally 6-8 months of just sleep mode when not in use with no visible slowdowns. Although that is OS version dependent. A buggy version of a particular OS might need a reset if it’s a bad update, but that’s about it. And I would probably reset in between heavy workloads with lots of data moving around like video editing. But for just surfing and office work? Just reset the application, or clear the browser cache.
@null_spacex2 жыл бұрын
I work as a software engineer using my MacBook countless hours everyday. I have zero memory leak issues. I sleep my MacBook every night and shut down maybe once a week or every 2 weeks. Your Mac is SUPPOSED to use your RAM in exactly the way you described.

Pretty sure if either sleep or completely powered off was optimal, Apple would say something about it. Turning your computer off an on I suppose might cause more strain on the components, but not so much that it's going to affect your machine. By the time something like that affects your machine (20+ years) you will have moved on to something else. This reminds me of the people who used to say "starting up your car more causes wear on the parts and will damage it quicker" and so people started idling their cars more often. What people never mention, or realize, is that yes, on paper going to an off state and back to an on state will cause more stress/wear and tear, than just a continual on state, it takes tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of cycles, for it to actually impact your device (or car). I'd say unless you're planning to keep your MacBook for about 25+ years, I wouldn't really worry about shutting down versus going to sleep. And I can't really think of anyone who's still using a 25 year old laptop for anything of significance. Maybe to let your 5 year old play minesweeper on your old college laptop that still holds a 5 minute charge? Also, the speed and having things stored in RAM is hardly an issue these days. It takes effectively maybe 2-3 seconds to open a program versus 1 second. Your day won't be over and your efficiency isn't going to take some kind of dramatic drop. You likely don't even start working in your program fast enough to take advantage of that 1-2 second faster load. Startup is equally as fast, and it is a negligible difference. I think from lifting my lid to power on and being in the desktop, it takes about 5 seconds from being completely shut down. I'm not usually even ready to start working in 5 seconds, so yes, while it might load in about 1-2 seconds from sleep, it's not anything that makes sense to worry about. Any stuff going on in the background during sleep mode I would assume also goes on in the background while your computer is idle. Any time you step away for a few minutes, your computer knows. If it's smart enough o perform tasks in sleep mode, it should be plenty smart enough to run indexing when the computer is idling for any given time, then dial it back as soon as it senses input again. That, and the fact that even while you're actively on the machine, there are plenty of times where you aren't demanding 100% of the performance, that it could be doing these things in the background with 0 performance affect on the tasks you are performing yourself. It's honestly just up to whatever personally works works best for you. Put your computer to sleep, power it down, whatever makes the most sense or is easiest. I just as soon keep it turned off when not in use, as I feel it is better protected. If the components are actively running, even in a low power mode, there is more chance of damage should a surge go through (if plugged in), or there is some kind of physical jolt (dropping your case/bag), or if liquid gets near the machine. If the machine is off, a lot of these things are potentially less likely to cause damage. Not saying they won't, but even a small percentage less likely is enough for me.

My MacBook Pro sleeps more than I shut it down going on 10 years of long-hour use. It's great! Point of interest, years ago there was a recording studio I visited from time to time just north of Boston,. Everything there was analog then and Apple, if they were at all up and running, were at the clunky devices stage, so it was long before ProTools and Logic were developed. 24-multi track tape machines were the state-of-the-art. But all the outboard gear too was analog and the studio set-up was extensive. They kept all of their equipment running 24/7 (with fans/AC running to keep the control room cool.) The thinking was that powering on and off created surges which damaged the equipment more quickly than would be the case just leaving it all on. My old Phillips 212 turntable (still working since the early 70's) - the two things broken were the on/off switch and the lighted speed buttons don't always keep the turntable running - as they flip to off mode. (a wedged toothpick is jammed to keep it ON and a drill bit completes the lighted speed button circuit - 45/0ff/33 rpm. The turntable is plugged into my 6 channel Yamaha receiver and only powers up when I power up the Yamaha (a 7.1 surround system.) I wouldn't justify keeping the 6 channels x 100 watts running a hole in my wallet while I can save that money for new Apple toys (the Vision Pro arriving this week :)

@@alexabianny Of course. During testing they have found with thermal imaging the hottest part of the computer is where the screen meets the display at the hinge in the middle. So yes you can definitely clamshell mode with light work and occasionally with no problems. But without a fan the computer needs a way to “breath” and dissipate the heat, and the open keyboard helps the heat to escape and not get trapped. So for video or photo editing or using anything that needs graphics, just open it up and dim the display and you can still use it plugged into an external display with no problems. Clamshell looks good, but without a fan the Air cannot handle it full time, and even with a fan the Pro exhausts all that heat right onto the expensive and sensitive display in clamshell. But for office work or email or browsing it’s not a problem. I could be wrong but I had a powerbook.. I've been in the Mac laptop game for a minute.. I'm 97% sure when the laptop is plugged in it bypasses the battery completely if the battery is charged to 100% or as you said 95%. No cycles are counted while it's plugged in. It makes no sense for any laptop to run off battery powered while plugged in

Sorry but can you prove that rebooting your mac will cause the components to fail due to them being error checked on boot? Because I've worked in pc/mac repair for over 15 years and this sounds like complete bs. Like the idea that components that could be at full load while a machine is on could be damaged by getting fully discharged is nonsense. Also cache files on macs balloon when using productivity software and a reboot is often the only way to get back to full performance. Quite a Sophie choice to be able to use after effects at full speed or destroy your mac rebooting it frequently.
@luzhang29822 жыл бұрын
It is bs. literally everything else will fail before power on cycles will cause it to fail. Usually accidents drops/spills, then mechanical failures like hinge, then lol things like glue. absolute last is other electronic components like capacitors, etc. Heat also kills things far more than power on cycles. Powering things off? more likely for it to cool off, and parts aren't dying of heat.

If the OS uses so much resources when I'm using it so that my UX is effected then it's a bad OS, using its resources way too inefficiently. The processor may be too slow or it needs more RAM. Thank you Arthur, I'll be shutting down my Mac whenever I'm not using it from now on.

I've just moved over to a MacBook air from a mid 2010 MacBook pro that i've had from new. The pro has spent most of it's life sat on a desk mostly plugged in with the lid left open where it's had many many hours of use and rarely shut down. It still works just a bit slow and with a few wounds lol, missing key, the odd dent and spill causing sticky keys. You'd think the battery would be knackered but it still holds a charge and lasts just over an hour. I'll use the air in the same way and hopefully it'll last a good while.

99% of the time I let it sleep. The only times I shut it down are: before a time machine backup (this is due to a glitch where if I plug in the drive it doesn’t wanna backup for some reason, and restarting has been found to clear this issue by allowing spotlight to freely index on first boot with the drive attached [my educated guess]). The other time is when I travel. It’s easier to do that than keep wondering if I put it in airplane mode, especially since I don’t use it on the plane, as I’m too busy looking out the window. :)

Hi heavy Macuser here since 2015 when i switched from windows. Since then I had four different mac models personal and provided by my workplaces. I almost never shut down my Macs except for upgrades and password reset issues or say if i plan to not use them for weeks or for a long time. I can say on the most extreme scenario am still going strong with one of my backups a Macbook 12 from 2015, which had a keyboard replacement in 2019 (done free by Apple since this was a known issue on these Macs) and a blackout screen in 2021 (replaced by Apple) but the screen was never cracked it just worn off showing the typical blank screen. I have never replaced any batteries or logic components this Mac still works swiftly and plan to keep it until 2025 completing a full 10 yr cycle as it was bought maxed out in RAM and storage which is still superior from basic config Apple is selling in their new models at their stores in 2023. For my other Macs inefficiencies or cracked screens were never there I replaced batteries in two of them when approaching 900 - 1,000 cycles while still bearing some minimal charge but that is all, so I guess in statistical metrics anything can always happen but cracked screens or other non-typical problems should not be a real concern if you do not turn off your Mac regularly. Hope this helps.

I have always left my Macbooks/Powerbooks on and plugged in 24/7. I quit the apps, do Time Machine backups and then lower the screen brightness before I go to bed. The Macs do their maintenance tasks overnight. That works the same as putting it in sleep mode, doesn't it? I have never seen my routine offered as a suggestion. No, the macbook in clamshell mode doesnt charge and discharge like ios devices. It charges the battery and when full, it taked the energy of the socket, remaining charged the battery and not wasting cycles. If long time in clamshell mode, battery can discharge up to 80% and remain in this SOC (again, taking the power from the socket)
@ghost-user5592 жыл бұрын
Actually no matter what Apple says (or anyone else) this behavior WILL lead to battery swelling far more frequently than anything else. You can do it occasionally, but the heat and constantly being plugged in apparently does have a serious impact on the battery life and functionality despite MacOS battery software protections. I don’t know if it’s “leaking” more current than it should be, or if it’s strictly the heat, or something to do with the added voltage required to drive a display and utilize the graphics to do so, but it WILL destroy your battery faster if you use clamshell frequently. Also the heat WILL cause burn in on your display when doing heavy tasks. Look up everything I have mentioned in regards clamshell mode and forum posts of screen burn in, and swelling of the battery. To be safe use Al dente and set the charge manually to 40% when on charger for long periods.
@rvarm212 жыл бұрын
@@ghost-user559 it is the same as what Apple does with macos. If you have the Macbook in Clamshell mode for long periods of time it keeps the battery at 80% and doesnt charge more. So you dont need that app that you said

@@rvarm21 I know they say that but they are lying, or they just don’t know. I don’t care if you take the advice or leave your machine to break. It’s your money friend. Just remember when your battery does swell that it’s your fault and you were clearly warned. I hope it doesn’t happen, but you can go online to forums yourself to see that it does in fact happen. Instead of being prideful and cocky, and having a ruined machine, you can always just look it up for yourself. A MacBook is far more powerful and uses far hotter components and a much larger battery than a phone, it’s totally different situations. And people ALSO reported swelling batteries when they leave an iPhone plugged in too often. Unless money is not a problem getting another MacBook. Then go for it and use it however you want. But just remember someone who has had Apple products for ten years warned you not to trust them.

Actually, it's not a problem to turn off daily. First, there are no tests that damage components, and not really any tests are run on startup. Second, for most apps, macos saves the memory when you shutdown or even exit the app. Yes power draw is minimal, but it's not nothing. If you aren't using it for a while it's probably worth shutting down. Also background functions will also work when you aren't pushing device to the limit or completely idle. But if it requires it first, it will do it first. Either on startup, or while you are running faster tasks.

Bought macbook air back in 2018. Always used sleep mode and only restarted once or twice a week. This completely destroyed the battery ending up with no backup and ended up even frying up something on the board. All this within 2 years. Got it repaired and replaced the battery with an after-market battery. Runs like a charm since last 4 years. Followed these steps : 1. I mostly keep the laptop connected to charger when in use (unless charging option is not available) 2. If the laptop is connected then only I would close the lid and let it sleep. Shut down is must at day end. Never leave the laptop sleeping while it is not connected to socket. This just kills the battery. The above experience was with intel model. May be things have changed with M1.

I had a friend who worked for the Apple in the service department. He told me 2 important things about Apple laptops: 1. Never turn off the laptop. Why?! Because the difference between the temperature. When it's on, the temp is normal or high, when it's off, the temp is low. Very simple. So the CPU (and many things inside of your Mac) getting "older and older" because of the temp difference. (like the engine in your car) ---- The second thing is the OS when you buy a brand new MacBook. So you need to clean your HDD and erase it with the preinstalled OS, and you need to install a new OS from the scratch. Why? I don't know,... :D .. but he knew something.. maybe.. :x So I do this every time. PS: I never close the lid when I use it as a workstation, because of the thermal things. I let my laptop breathing... and when I go to sleep, I let my laptop to go to sleep too without closing the lid. That's all.
