I still can't wrap my head around the fact that apple cider is just "fresh" apple juice in the US

I took a group of HS students to Lithuania once. Made them swear on their mothers ' graves that they would not drink or use a few common words (the kids were Hungarian) that are swears in Lithuanian...off we go on day 4 for a 3 hour bus ride to an event. I had my 1.5 liter bottle of cider and drank it within about an hour. The kids were surprised, the Lithuanians were surprised, nobody said anything. Feeling all warm and fuzzy, I was speaking rather loudly to the Hungarians, as I stood up to face the kids sitting in the back, the driver swerved, I tumbled over, I said those Hungarian words I told the kids not to use...everybody stared, the locals were kind of shocked, the Hungarians were trying hard not to laugh. Locked eyes with one of the Lith teachers,, she smiled and nirst out lauging, everybody laughed for a very long time. I apologized for my language. The Lith teacher said it's ok, but drinking is an issue we will have to address... I said it's only cider and all the Hungarians laughed. (They told me later that I sounded like a kid busted by mom and dad for drinking the first time...). She said yeah, and you are drunk... I looked at the bottle and saw that it was 5% alcoholm.. and it dawned on me that for us in the US cider is apple juice and for the rest of the known world it is what we call hard cider ...When I explained that the Lithuanians looked up hard cider vs cider and lay gjed all afternoon at my honest mistake...

You dont need to hydrate your yeast to "activate" it. Its a good thing to do if you fear that your yeast maybe dead, but if your yeast is less than 6mo old and properly refrigerated, you dont need to. I haven't hydrated yeast in about 2 years and haven't had an issue.
@rebel4466 Жыл бұрын
While true, certain conditions can make it harder for yeast to work properly. Like a high sugar content. Gets it going a bit before entering the all you can eat buffet. But will work anyway in pretty much all cases. After all, making mead was pretty much a complete accident

The fruits won’t spoil? The alcohol content even when done isn’t enough to preserve the fruit right? Or is the yeast enough to stop the other bacteria from growing?

Best bet for an answer, not just this time, but every time you wanna know something like that.

@Lucifurion5 ай бұрын
I’d assume so as apple cider is just flavored, unpasteurised, unfiltered juice. The sugars are still there, it’d just taste a bit different than if you used cider. Here in Australia cider is always alcoholic but I’m pretty sure most Americans call the alcoholic stuff hard cider, I could be wrong on that though.
