Are you getting paid to promote that grafting tool? we have tried the grafting tool in the orchards, it doesn't work because it crushes the scion when cutting, get a good sharp knife and whip graft, it's the best method for beginners. I have been successfully grafting for years, bin the grafting tool, it's a gimmick.

I wholeheartedly agree Jim! I was excited to use the grafting tool at first (when I filmed this video) but have since gone back to using a dedicated grafting knife. The tool worked about 25% of the time on my grafts and was actually more of a faff on than the quick, simple, honest work of the grafting knife. Hopefully others see this before they buy the tool! 👍

@@bournebright The tool was brought in by some salesman a few years ago, it was tried and tested but failed, it crushes the cambium layer on both the host and the scion, a good sharp knife is hard to beat, we clean them with methylated spirits between each graft, mainly because it sterilises and dries rapidly, whip and tongue grafting is successful for beginners.

You made everything easier pls don't stop I'm subscribing immediately What trees will be good for the root stocks?
@bournebright
@bournebright Жыл бұрын
Different root stocks grow to different heights and in different conditions. First port of call: find out which root stocks grow well in your region/climate/zone. Second: Choose a root stock that will grow the tree to your desired height. Hope that helps.

Some of your scions looked like they had 1 and 2 year old wood. One of your grafts had a fruit bud on the scion and they usually show on 2 year old wood. You did a great job explaining grafting.

Yes, some of them were 2 yrs old. I got the best I could from that particular tree (that I could reach). And yes, I actually used a combination of apple and pear tree scions to show the technique and the pear tree had fruit buds and was two yr old wood also. Good spots 👍

Hello Bourne. I'm from Uganda in Africa. I'm growing quite a number of apple varieties as seedlings on my balcony. I plan to plant them in the country side. I will graft them too. Can all these varieties be rootstocks for any variety that l will graft on them?

I have a grafted apple tree, should you cut any branches that are growing from the bottom, and also what kind of tree did you graft the apple one to?

So I have a lovely tree in my house I’m about to sell. Didn’t even think about grafting a tree from it up until recently. Do you think its worth even trying to get some Sions off it during August?

If it's your only chance of cloning it, yes... Apples are quite forgiving and I've managed to do this successfully a few times in the past so go for it. My best advice these days though is to go with the whip and tongue graft as I have most success with this method. I also prefer manually cutting the apple myself; it feels more personal, respectful than using those apple grafting tools. And let's face it, you can't beat a good wooden handled grafting knife... Good luck.

Can you graft onto water shoots? Had an overgrown lopsided tree in the garden when we moved in - it's been tidied but has sent out a lot of water shoots that are in the ideal location for grafting to.

Where are you? This sounds crazy I know; and apologies if I'm stating the obvious, but try to go hunting for them when they are easier to identify. In the UK, in a month or so, apple trees will be starting to blossom, they have fairly distinct flowers. That's your first chance to go hunt them down. Then of course the next time they're easy to find is from about july onwards (here in the UK (mid-late summer) when the trees will be laden with fruit. Keep your eyes open when you're driving about. I hope you find some!

Do root stocks have to be the same species of tree? Can you graft an apple scion onto root stock that isn't even a fruit tree? Or would that cause the fruit to not be very good? Thanks.

The scion and the rootstock cambium layers don’t have to match exactly as you describe. So long as the cambium layers cross at some point, then the graft should succeed and as long as it’s air and waterproof. And as someone else commented that grafting tool is rubbish.
