I totally agree, I have found this channel very usefull learning about the many different grafting techniques and how to use them in the best way. I live in Denmark, so some varieties will not work in our area and our season is shorter due to our climate, but regardless of this many of the techniques shown in the videos work just fine adopted to our season 💪🏻💪🏻thank you for really good advices😁

Started grafting as an experiment after watching a video on KZbin. Had a large wild cherry tree (about 25 cm diameter) that I needed to remove because it was shading a large area and was of no use. Cut it about one meter from the ground and put many little grafts inside the bark around it's edge. 70% of them lived and grew extremely fast to about 1.5 meters in that summer. More than half were broken by the wind, they were too large for their link. The 3 branches that survived on one side made a large tree crown. In 3 years the grafts went from half a pencil diameter to thicker than my arm (I am a normal sized male). Like they were on steroids, 3 little branches took all the power from a mature tree. I still am amazed. Last year I cut a 10 cm wild pear tree and put about 9 grafts of pear and apple trees. Almost all lived and I had to shorten them 3 times over the summer not to get broken by the wind again. It's like a bush on a pole.

I really enjoy watching these videos. Super clear explanations as to why it's done the way it's done + nice tips regarding graft protection and aftercare. This has helped me graft 9 different pear varieties on just one tree, including Nashi. I'm really excited for it to flower for the first time this spring and to see whether it can handle all 9 grafts. 😊 Also, there is some kiwi budwood waiting in the fridge to be grafted onto my super strong 'Solo' kiwi vine. It was sold to me as self-pollinating, but it's only ever given me male flowers and one or two marble sized fruit per year. I was wondering, which kiwi varieties have you been grafting? 🥝
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 7 ай бұрын
The biggest problem with having too many varieties in one tree is being able to control the different vigor of each one, pruning those who grow quicker more aggressively. And the trees look a bit awkward because some branches are flowering and others are not. But you have the benefit of tasting different varieties from the same tree. I have grafted a few varieties of actinidia chinensis (golden kiwi). The self-pollinizing kiwis seem a good idea at first but the size of the fruits is often very small. Its best to go for male and females plants and make sure there are plenty of pollen available for good sized fruits.

Thank you for the very informative video. I had few questions when I grafted the maple tree. Will the soil need to be dry in the rootstock , or need to be moist in order to get better success rate? I lived in cold and moist spring environment. And the 2nd question is , for the tip of the scion, is there anything to be avoid in order to get better success ? Many thanks !
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 6 ай бұрын
In early spring, a rootstock that has access to water starts moving sap earlier. That's the main difference. Very cold weather is a concern and good graft protection is a must, in this situation. If the scion is not protected and the tip of the scion is cut, its best to apply a bit of pruning paste or parafilm to avoid dehydration.

Sim.

Thank you! I'm waiting for your new videos all the time! Your peaceful tempo of speaking and working recorded on sharp video, clear scenes focused on a very subject of talking encourage me to do more in my modest tryings of graftings. I should confirm about recommended here modified cleft grafting as on a balanced type of grafting which I checked in spring 2023 on an asian persimon (Diospyros kaki). It works well on 9 years old persimon tree. I did 8 graftings in the end of April a little before buds opened. 2 of graftings were by modified method and with success. Also did 3 graftings with classical cleft grafting (1 was dried out later due to thin small twig and lower disposition on tree), 2 bud graftings - all were well growing. And did 1 failed whip and tongue. Whip and tongue was done once, and I didn't have an experience with it. Two parts were not combined well - I knew it later. As you recommended here I used thin layer of parafilm to cover grafted scions and used envelope up to 4 weeks to protect them from sunlight.
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the information regarding your experience with persimon grafting. Most techniques will work with them if the sap is flowing well. Whip and Tongue is excellent but many things can go wrong and cause it to fail if you are not experienced enough when doing the cuts. Practice makes perfect. Thanks for the nice comment about the videos.

Good luck to your season Jsacadura. I'll be trying my first time grafting later this month with OHx87 and asian pear, hopefully they are compatible! 👍 Modified Cleft graft seems easy enough to do, whip and tongue looks dangerous if one isn't experienced with knives 😆
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 7 ай бұрын
Whip and Tongue requires experience since you have to point the knife at yourself when doing the tongue. But anchoring the hands correctly limits the travel of the knife and the danger of cutting yourself is almost zero. Its not a technique to start grafting, that's for sure. Good luck with your first experiments.

Hello! I want to ask about vine bud grafting. When you graft to a bud do you cut the vine above it? I tried without cutting the vine above the bud. The bud developed and then died. Of 20 buds, nothing was caught.
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 7 ай бұрын
At first you don't cut the upper part of the branch so the sap keep flowing, but as soon as the graft has taken the upper part has to be removed or the grafts will fail due to the competition with the rootstock buds (that are older and better established). Why do you find the modified cleft graft superior to the regular cleft graft when working with different size scions? I have found good success with regular cleft graft and when I am using different size scions I just place the scion at a bit of an angle to get the cambium layer to cross the rootstock. It has worked pretty good for me.
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 6 ай бұрын
Using the cleft graft with a smaller sized scion leaves a gap to one side of the cut (that gap can cause graft failure since its an entry point for water and air and its a difficult area for the plant to fill resulting in a weal point). That's why people tend to use 2 scions to fill the space. Whatever the option you use, the final graft is not as clean as the modified cleft - at least to me. That's why I prefer to use it.

If the buds in the scions are starting to wake up and the rootstock is still quite dormant the graft might fail, as it tries to develop using its reserves since it can't join vascular tissues with the dormant rootstock. That's why, sometimes, the scions are stored in the fridge as we wait for the first signs of the rootstock breaking dormancy.

Hi, it's always a pleasure to watch a new video of yours. Thanks in large part to your videos for one and a half years now I have great success in grafting. Last year I tried many wild graft combinations (based on some sense though), many of which were successful as of last year. Grafting really is quite an enjoyable activity, whether it be purely for propagation, or for personal enjoyment and experimentation. Anyway, thanks so much for sharing and greetings from a very mild and spring-like northern Germany.

You're quite right. Its a wonderful sense of achievement when our grafts start to be consistently successful. That allows to redefine our whole orchard without being dependent on the varieties that the stores propose. Over here the weather is also quite mild and everything is starting to bloom.Thanks for the comment.

Another great video my friend, thank you for sharing. I would encourage anybody that wants to try grafting to give it a shot, after watching your videos, last spring I attempted to graft for the 1st time. I made 12 cleft grafts (6 apple, 1 apricot 1 plum and 1 plout). and 9 of them were successful. I am waiting for more scions to be delivered anytime now. Thanks for the very detailed video.

Hi, Daniel. If your trees are still fully dormant store the scions on the fridge and wait until early March. In 2-3 weeks the grafts will take off very quickly. Otherwise they will be waiting for the rootstock to wake up and a colder week could damage them. Thanks for the comment.

Thankyou for the fantastic videos, I’ve been enjoying them. I did almost 50x black mulberry t bud grafts in late summer (now in New Zealand). I used buddy tape and covered the bud. I then used a couple of layers of electrical tape (but not over the bud) to make it as tight as I could. The petiole is still exposed. I am concerned that I made them too tight. Do you think that is possible? How tight is too tight?
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 7 ай бұрын
Using electrical tape in bud grafts doesn't pose a problem regarding pressure. Electrical tape can stretch a bit and, in that type of graft, the bud is exposed, so it will grow without constraints. With other types of grafts, whip and tongue, for instance, and using raffia, could cause problems for the growing tissues. The raffia will have to be cut after a couple of months to allow the graft to grow.

Do you prefer wrapping grafting rubber band around a graft 1st then wrap parafilm around that (seems like maybe you do that technique at 9m20s), or wrap parafilm 1st then wrap grafting rubber band around that, or just purely use that sticky 'self-vulcanizing' black tape you show around 9m40s ?
@Pokeman_official1
@Pokeman_official1 7 ай бұрын
I usually wrap with parafilm first then electrical tape to secure it
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 6 ай бұрын
I prefer to secure the graft first to ensure a good cambium contact, so I use the rubber tape (or natural raffia) first. Parafilm is, depending on the technique, insufficient to do it (not enough pressure is possible). So, parafilm is used after the rubber tape to cover the scion and prevent dehydration (this step is optional when using other means of protection, like a padded envelope).
@armyofda12monkeys
@armyofda12monkeys 6 ай бұрын
@JSacadura thanks for the reply, yes I like rubber band first as well to make sure the scion and rootstock are aligned as you do each wrap around it. While if you did parafilm first you can't see if the scion moved out of place earlier in the wrap as you are tightening the parafilm around. Thanks for confirmation. Btw Do you like to wet the rubber band and/or parafilm to keep some moisture in there? I do that sometimes. It doesn't mess up all grafts ive done that way, I've had alot of success but wondering if chance of bacteria/etc forming and hence why most people don't do it. Although I used to hold the scionwood in my mouth as some old orchardists still do to keep it from drying while cutting the rootstock so wasn't sure what the difference is. (Note another orchardist tells me he isn't sure what chemicals people are spraying on their trees so he keep scionwood in glass of water when he isn't working with it in the field).

I have a 7 year old peach tree that suffered an almost complete girdling by a deer 3 years ago but I was able to rescue it by cutting back 1/3 of the branches and making some bridge grafts. The trunk previously divided into 3 even branches but after cutting one branch out it never grew back, leaving me with a Y-shape. What graft would you recommend to add the third main branch back in? Poor tree, I tried bud grafting it in about 5 different places a couple years ago and they all dried up and last year I tried taking a pencil-thick scion and set it firmly in a T-shape cut and it leafed out and shriveled up. (All of my attempts were done in late winter/early spring as soon as the bark was slipping) Thanks!
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 7 ай бұрын
The tree has redirected all the sap flow for the 2 remaining branches so, whichever graft you try to use, it will probably end up failing or not developing enough, due to competition with the other 2 branches. Your best bet is trying a lateral bark graft as you did, with a more developed scion and, at the same time, pruning aggressively the 2 remaining branches, to give the graft a chance to develop, but I probably wouldn't do it with a 7 year old peach tree (it usually doesn't like such an aggressive manipulation and it may not bounce back).

Very informative and well done instructional videos! Would you recommend wedge grafting in late winter, or early spring, for an established 23-year-old Kousa Dogwood tree? Bark is very thin and the intended scion would be large diameter. Wedge location would be a 6” diameter former limb cut. Thank you so much for all your efforts in these videos!
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 7 ай бұрын
Since the bark is very thin and the scion is large diameter, wedge grafting is, most likely, your best bet. Early spring is usually the best option since the chances of cold damage are less likely to occur, but it really depends on your area and the level of graft protection.

@Veritas-dn6ss

Why do you cut the cleft on the side of the rootstock instead of down the middle? The scion doesn't fit the smaller cleft anyways, so you need to align the graft to one side. The advantage of cutting down the middle of the rootstock is there is a lot more pressure applied to the scion and you don't need to stake/trim back the scion the first year when it starts growing.
