As a sailor, I would advise you to repair the tarpaulins of the Hoop coop as soon as possible. If there is a strong wind, the small tears can quickly become very large and the repair much more complicated. 🙋♀⛵

I use a vinyl repair tape for my camping equipment, maybe not that cost effective for larger holes, but it lasts a long time even through bad weather. But that doesn't look like like tarp material, it looks like the rolls of plastic you can buy at the hardware store. You are right though, that was my first thought.

I have a couple LGD 7 month old puppies where one is much calmer than the other. Their names are Michael and Gabriel (get it? lol). Gabriel is bouncy and excited and misbehaves and Michael is calm and polite. What I found works better than telling Gabriel "No" and pushing him (giving negative attention), is giving all my attention to Michael. I ignore Gabriel and turn my body away if he jumps. Eventually he sees that Michael is getting attention for being a good boy, so he copies Michael, THEN I give him some love.

Wetlands are also really good at soaking up excess water too. So when you have a ton of flooding upstream, that water leaves the wetlands slower than it enters said wetlands. And that can make a huge difference downstream as to how bad the flooding gets (or if it even floods at all). Ofc, when you have massive rain events like y'all had the other day, there's just no helping that. There wasn't anywhere for the water to go. Although the wetlands on your farm did likely help quite a bit in preventing the flooding from being worse as the water had somewhere to go. I live in an area that used to be wetlands. Unfortunately, the wetlands were almost entirely drained over a hundred years ago. Just about every farm field around here has tiles - keeps the water from staying and instead forces that water to run off into our creeks, streams, and rivers. And as a result, this is also an area that tends to flood. There's been efforts to restore some of the wetlands, but there's a lot of nutrients in the soil that farmers are very reluctant to give up. And then there's all the businesses and housing developments that also want that land. It's a difficult balancing act and unfortunately the monied interests tend to win out.

We have had some serious flooding events in STL the last few years and the issue? Levees and building in the flood plains. But, do they listen to the scientists? Normally, no. However, one development was canceled, finally, because it was in the flood plain.

This is a throwback memory to when you were dealing with the rat and then it disappeared. I had one show up last week to raid the birdseed leftovers on the patio. I set a trap and this morning found it dead in the trap. Well, actually, it was dead but was only attached to the trap by the skin on the back of its "hand." That means that it struggled mightily after it was fatally injured and almost got away to go die somewhere else. (I wish that didn't mean that it suffered while dying, but I really didn't want it coming inside as an earlier one did.)

Just an idea for you, maybe for future project. Instead of having a shade structure you have to move around every time you move the cows and have to do maintenence on when it breaks down or has issues when moving, you could build "pavillions" in an area that would be where 4 pens/fields meet. Drape them with shade cloth or cover with tin roofing. You can then adjust which sides of the pavilion are open based on which field they are in. Would also make a good place to grow vining plants like grapes, although they would need to be protected from the animals.

To be honest, there is a very small part of me that is sad knowing that you and Allison left my native state of Connecticut and moved out of state and into others before finally starting a wonderful farm in Vermont. There is another larger part of me that is very happy for you two, and all the good Vermonters that you have encountered, and found a nice place for yourselves to settle into, grow, and thrive. Besides, Ct, though still a beautiful state with much diversity in land and people, has lost much of its farming community in the past fifty years, it is obvious that you made an excellent choice. You are both a wonderful addition to any community, and I am so happy for your success and healthy lives. Your videos are much appreciated.
