It never gets old for me to hear Morgan say, "well I am not really a cat person...." while Ginny Barn Cat is doing her usual best to forget about personal space. I notice though that she remembers personal space when Pablo Barn Cat gets in HER face. It is very telling of how Morgan Gold treats his animals, when he gives them a good life with only one bad day at the farm. I did enjoy the duck "retrospective" and would like to see more on the other residents of Gold Shaw Farm.

Being a pet owner you also have to be able to make the hard decision as to when is the best time to say enough is enough when treating a sick pet. You don't typically 'dispatch' a pet, but you do need to be able to make the decision as to what is best for them

I worked for Michigan Farm Bureau a few years. They had at least 2 Vets on staff full time who were just there to consult with and make farm visits for free. That was back in the 80's. You might try calling your local farm bureau before branching out into a new species. There are knowledgeable people who can help you avoid these heart wrenching tragedies. Better for you and your animals.

Dispatching chickens was a hard thing for me to get around as a kid. We had chickens that we named. That was a mistake. I didn't eat chicken for a few years after that. Still dispatched chickens, just never named the ones that were destined for butchering. It's been awhile since I've had to do a butchering job, haven't had livestock in a long long while. But it's not something I'll forget. Not something I'm particularly looking forward too once we get some land to raise chickens on, but I recognize it as a part of the job and duty that has to happen. And like you said, knowing where the meat comes from is a huge weight off a persons mind. You know how well the animals were treated because you raised them well. Treated them well. Fed them well.

I found this channel when I was thinking about getting ducks for the first time myself, we had ducks previously but we had given up the last one so she could live with other ducks. We had gotten chickens but my aunt (Who I was caring for at the time while she was going through her cancer treatment.) kept asking me how the ducks were doing. She loved ducks and to bring her joy I was looking into bringing a few into our flock. I found Metzer farms and your channel. Read everything I could find at the time and ordered what I thought would be our only three ducks. I got so nervous about raising the ducklings that when I saw Khaki Campbells at our local feed store I instantly bought two and asked them to add one more, whichever duckling they could grab, to the box, incase I killed one. All those duckling survived and sadly, a few days ago, we lost the last one, a Welsh Harlequin. I would like to think, that despite the slight cringe of your first videos, you helped those ducklings grow up a little bit happier and stronger than they would have been without you, so thank you, Morgan Shaw. Even with your very human struggles you helped me and all the many ducklings, I've raised since those first few, have the confidence we needed to get to this point. Also my ducks still go running to bed if you yell "All ducks go to bed!" in your videos and I have the volume up to high on my computer, makes me laugh every time, as they glare at me wondering why they don't have dinner waiting.

Birds are brilliant creatures... even the smallest of them. I told the story yesterday and your "All ducks go to bed" story reminded me that I had Gouldian finches mixed with a range of other Australian finches and the male would do a short sharp whistle and it would cause all of the birds to perch for the night. Long after that old boy passed away, I would use that same short sharp whistle to tell them it was bedtime, and every single time it would work. Very rarely I would need to have them all move to the top of the cage and could use that same method and continued it until the last of my finches passed away. I loved them so much!

I would also like to point out make sure your whole family is open to the change and don't be surprised if they bail afterwards. We got chickens for eggs and meat and "Guard geese". In two years with a flock of less than a dozen birds. We've used maybe a half dozen ourselves and we gave away probably 4-5 dozen a month to my brothers friends. My mother and I made the promise. I would take care of the manual labor but she would financially support and would dispatch and I would help clean. 2 years not one was dispatched. And now it's time for me to take action because me reorganizing the coop's roosts for easier cleaning and creating a broody/isolation box inside has now become I should use any money I get from dog sitting a couple times a year to buy bird feed. So this year my goal is to have the birds cover their own costs and expand the flock. We have 8 hens now and it takes 2-4 days to fill a dozen in the summer. I would like to get that to 1-2 days before I sell eating eggs. Hatching eggs maybe. So this year Goslings, Hatching eggs and selling young birds. Going to be picky about what we keep. We have two hens that scream at me for being within 5 feet of them. I already have a lap chicken named Rosemary so I don't need overly friendly. Just not drama queens.

Like you, I studied books & KZbin channels on farming/homesteading for years before buying a small place in the country. I would love to see either some episodes dedicated to or a section of many shows dedicated to tips & tricks that you have learned & use. I’m single, female and didn’t buy a little hobby farm until I was 55 years old. Now at 63 years old, I really need all the tips & tricks to try to keep up with things. I’d also love to see detailed instructional videos on butchering ducks & geese.
