In this video I discuss my experience working with Apple Support to fix an Apple Watch Red Exclamation Mark (REM) crash screen on a Series 2 model Apple watch deemed to be a "catastrophic" condition.

The REM condition has been talked about at length on various internet forums and articles. This means the REM has been well publicized and an ongoing problem Apple does already know about and can't claim ignorance to (though they will during your call), so educate yourself before you call so YOU will not be easily dissuaded from pursuing Apple to fix the defect in their product.
Beware and patient.
During my call I experienced a lot of "hoop" jumping prior to finally getting Apple to undertake the process of fixing their defective product. The operators are paid to be there, to waste your time, wear you down, and keep you spinning - and spiraling toward accepting the fact you have to pay to fix their defective product. Nope, stay professional and persistent. Respectfully ask to speak to their supervisor to discuss further options. (I know you'll want to scream at the top of your lungs, but remember, your goal - to get your watch fixed, not to simply vent.) Use counter-clever tactics right when the call starts. They will ask you all kinds of questions before you can even get a word in about the watch. Wait for it, then, recite the defective condition, out of no fault of your own, and the research shows the watch is defective and you'd like to have it restored (nice way to say fix it).
The Failed Air-Bag Example -
Like all defective products, the manufacture fixes a product defect, much like a failed vehicle AIR-BAG.
Manufactures don't tell the car owner to pay for and fix their failed AIR-BAGs do they? Of course not. The defective AIR-BAG is fixed and paid for by the manufacturer. The should also reimburse you for the time expense of having to bring their defective equipment to them so they can "get it right." What are you, a guinea pig?
Prepare for HOOP jumping -
So it was interesting to navigate around Apple Support's very professionally done "hoop" jumping and clever "gas lighting" attempts during the call. What I mean by gas-lighting (look it up, very interesting manipulation technique). Apple attempts to gas-light a caller by suggesting you broke the device by - bungy jumping off Mount Everest. They will try to get you to think about all kinds of crap. So, don't "admit" anything - they will have it on record and use it against you from that point forward. The watch failed, is in REM defect mode, please fix it.
Be prepared for the series of frustrating bog downs during the call as well. Long waits, security processes conducted during the call about your device, proof of ownership, use of Find My iPhone, caller verification, personal information acquisition. All this, per design, makes you sit there feeling like a Guantanamo detainee. All designed to soften you up and create the relationship they want between you and the operator. They are in control and you are not. Stay cool.
In any case, I hope after watching this video, you may be encouraged to pursue your claim for Apple Support repair services without having to pay to fix the REM.
Hint - Prepare before the call:
Research REM before calling Apple Support for services regarding your device.
Watch this video all the way through, each step I explain prepares you for success because you will have it in your sub-conscience pre-awareness programming.
You will ingrain it into your "Case" that your issue is a known issue, a defective product situation.
If not, Apple Support surely will try to capitalize on your lack of knowledge during the call.
In my experience, they worked the service request as a standard "Warranty" or "Service Charge" matter until you indicate otherwise by talking about specific references either from public or from Apple themselves regarding REM as a product defect matter, and not a simply "repair a watch that I broke myself," situation.

got the same problem today... i went to bed yesterday after my training with my apple watch, I uploaded the latest update on my apple watch, put it on the charger. this morning, nothing was working... I did try to reset the watch several times without any result. I spent more than an hour and a half with an employee that told me they would have to repair it for 250$ CAD (I paid it 300$ CAD 2 years ago...) NO WAY... I was so mad and so pissed. The watch was working amazing before their update. The guy on the phone told me it might be something else broken (the software). UNBELIEVABLE !!! the watch was perfect before the update and they're trying to fool me... nah nah nah. asked to speak to the manager. He suddently told me that it would be still covered and no charge to repair it if it's really since the update. with the serial number they were able to see that the update hasn't been finished so it's coincide with my explaination. they will send me the box in 2 business days and it will take about 8-10 business days to get it repair. thanks for the video. fuck apple

This happened to me. Went to charge my watch at the end of the day and it went blank. Then the red exclamation mark came up. I took it to a local apple store and they said they needed to send it away for repair. I was told if it was a SOFTWARE problem then they will fix or place it for free. But if it’s a HARDWARE problem then they will tell me how much it will cost me to fix but suggested I brought a new one if it’s the hardware as it could be cheaper than getting it fixed. They took it for repair. A week later they sent me a txt saying my NEW WATCH is being sent to me. Didn’t tell me what the problem was but got a new watch 👍

I was able to talk to a supervisor and he sent me a box to send the watch in, after they got it, they sent me an email saying to check my status because there was a problem with my watch. I went online and they said it was a hardware issue and that I had 3 days to contact them or pay them 199. I waited till the third day because That was when I was free and they took down the contact and the way to pay, they also didn’t let me see what the issue was like the “ hardware issue” was no longer on the page. The next day, they sent me an email saying I misused it or there was accidental damage when in fact I just haven’t charged it in a very long time. I have the watch series 1. I’ll have to call back tomorrow.

It’s tricky dealing with the repair center’s claim that they found something wrong with the watch (according to their own inspection) and that something somehow excludes your watch from being repaired under the catastrophic (not your fault) REM crash issue. I encourage any lawyers to canvas For clients to build a class action against Apple. In that lawsuit, they request for discovery under subpoenas would ask Apple to produce all REM repair requests submitted, those that were denied, and proof as to the reason and technical issue preventing the consumer from receiving a costless repair. Until then, Apple (and its contracted repair service representatives) can pull fast ones off the legal radar by merely claiming, without proof, the watch is not eligible for repair due to there own internal, paid employees (under pressure to keep their jobs) assessment that the watch isn’t eligible. In writing this, it dawned upon me that Apple corporate may clam ignorance of their repair facility’s abuse of denials of cost free repairs. Being that, they could claim they were unaware of the practice, and shift the liability solely upon the repair service provider. In that regard, people should write and send a physical letter to Apple corporate officers (See SEC records online). That way, corporate would have received notice of the matter directly. Otherwise, sure, some people may have damaged their watch and sent it in for repair for damages not related to the REM crash. Come on, your watch at least needs to show the REM symbol on the face at power up. Being that said, like those greedy insurance companies, who will try to find minor pre-existing conditions in your watches to deny repairing a claim. Take pictures of your watch, the REM message, and overall condition before sending it in for repair. In fact, make a short video clip showing us your watch’s condition. If you don’t know how to edit the video, upload it to a shareable link to your google drive and email me at username@gmail. Please help me. they finally got the watch after their first senior advisor forgot to put the request in as stated from the second senior advisor, and now they are telling me that it is not only a software issue but that there is a hardware issue as well.

This is something I expected, Apple will start claiming, or at least the contracted repair center operation, will claim without any proof that there is another issue causing the watch to go into the red exclamation mark error screen) crash. I would love to set up a sting operation to send them a watch known to be the REM defect, and after sending it to Apple, they then claim it is something else. What I'm seeing here is now the REM can come on like the BSOD (Blue screen of Death) on windows systems. Where any number of issues could cause the BSOD. In my case, the watch was completely functional before update process automatically invoked itself and rebooted into the REM crash. What did they claim was the reason for the hardware issue? Or did they just generalizing call it a hardware issue?

mikesmultimedia I asked multiple times(over 10) what was the actual issue and they refused to tell me. But I called again did another hour long process and the new Sr. Told me that I was originally supposed to be covered for both anyways so he fixed it. No I’m just waiting for my watch but at this point I’m about to try and get compensated because the first Sr. Forgot to put it in, the second sr. Put it in but then I was told to still pay after, and yeah the third on fixed it but I shouldn’t have had a 3rd Senior rep in the first place. The only reason I got it the first time was because of this video so thank you for sharing this whole experience with us and helping us get through it

Again, the system appears to be designed to frustrate and wear down, and confuse the caller. Trying to turn the tables, hardware vs software, etc. So thank you on behalf of everyone who will read your experience and learn to not give up.

Lol i sent mine off for repair - they claimed it was water damaged.... I sent them a video of it on the Charging stand working before I sent it off. Declined the £189 repair cost and they have sent it back...... but it came back with the service port cover missing! Called them back and they told me there is nothing they can do to help and I’m the repair box it mentions a £75 fee for it to be diagnosed again so can’t send it back. Madness!!

I had same issue today with my watch, chat with support and same went to senior adviser, he told me same warranty is expired but he will waive the fees and as long my watch is not damaged or any water in it will be fix, waiting for the box now.

There it is! Hope my experience helped you deal with Apple's "Deny the Claim" by the book approach to discourage customers. They send the box quickly, so get the watch ready so you can putting back in the mail the same day. Turn around is quick too.

Jokes aside, I’m from Argentina and my Apple watch series 2 was stuck with that same error message, after this video I just followed his steps and called Apple, step by step as shown they send me a new watch but series 3!! (almost imposible in this end of the world) anyways... thanks a lot for sharing your experience, it was really helpful!!

@@thalisdiaz3577 I will still submit the repair. Your not going to talk about the crack, your focus is the REM. I've taken my laptop in for a keyboard fix. They document the scratches, but still fix the specific issue requested. In your case, the REM crash.

mikesmultimedia but they ask me if it was cracked and u said yes and they said that there gonna give me a new screen and fix it but I need to pay more than what I payed for the Apple Watch which Is crazy cause it wasn’t even my fault that ! Point happened over night while it’s was updating

This has happened to me when I was updating my watch and there was blackout in my neighborhood and my WiFi out and where I live my service on my phone it’s not that great and I felt naked on my wrist because I was used to wearing watches and it was really strange because I didn’t have it on at school and lucky I was happy they fix it for me and was waiting at school for the day to be over and for my watch to come and was just wanted to go and boom sound of relief

I’m on holiday and it’s just done it. Though it has showed the red mark it doesn’t do it always it just doesn’t turn on. It’s like a loop on the apple logo.

Hey guys i tried this and they wanted to charge me $250 to fix it. I am dealing with apple watch series 2 running OS5 not pairing with iOS13 on an iPhone 8 Plus. The first senior manager said yes this is a known software issue and if you have an old iPhone with ios 12 you can update it. I don't have one so he said send it in and they would update it for free. I send it in and then they say it is a hardware issue. When i asked for proof or defining what the issue is after an hour waiting they said they don't know and the engineering team won't tell them. The new senior rep said best bet is to receive the watch back and try sending it in again because it depends on what engineer you get sometimes.. Mind blown lol

I have apple watch 3 and They told me i need to pay 236usd for fixing REM. So now. I can buy new apple watch 3 for 169usd. Lol. This is ridiculous when i didn’t break it or it doesn’t have any damages on it. REM popped up when i was charging watch. So... well. After this I won’t buy apple product.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I really want to sit Apple down and get exact answers to why they feel they should charge a customer to repair a defective watch when it goes into REM crash. The watch has no keyboard, no usb slot, no sd card slot, do traditional user based refresh if the IS us not possible. This forces the user to have apple fix anything wrong with the watch. My example is when a car has defective airbag, and it is a design issue, the manufacturer days they will fix their defective product if the customer pays for it? The hardware design (completely non user serviceable device) is a product design forcing the customer to use apple 🍎 and only apple to fix the device. This, seems similar to a monopoly by hardware design. I would like to prepare a proposal to any and all class action lawyers to see what Apple is doing here and file the lawsuit. I will be happy to be the class representative. With the subpoena power we could find out exactly how many people have been subjected to this deceptive practice. We could also find out how the technician was able to determine that the REM was not a device flaw.

@@mikesmultimedia I bet it would be a lot they will get sued just like they did for slowing down old iPhones just to make people spend money on new phones but in this case it will be the iwatch now I mean I paid 400 dollars for a watch that won’t last me not even past 2 years ridiculous! all because of a bad software glitch they refuse to accept and force their customers to over pay! We should seriously create a class-action lawsuit

Hello there. The same thing happened with me and my watch is out of warranty and they are again and again telling me that it is an hardware based issue and i need to pay $175 to get it fixed. I used your example that a customer got the fee waived off and it was not an hardware based issue. They told me that if i am able to provide the case number for your watch, they may help me. So is there any way possible for you to provide that to me?

@@TechbyAg through a contact at some Apple reseller in Bangalore, I got my watch checked and they concluded that it was a hardware based issue. (The criteria was that since it wasn’t a software based issue so it was a hardware one). So now the watch is gone and I’m looking to buy a new one after being hopeless and losing so much energy on this issue.

I’m so pissed I called and chatted with a tech I’m going through the same thing they transferred me to a supervisor and still they did not want to waive the fee for me kept saying it’s out of warranty and I will have to pay 💰 the repair if I wanted it fixed smh ☹️

In my case, the watch was out of the warranty period. However, the problem that the watch experienced was a "catastrophic failure" as described by the tech during my calls. The "updating" process was the last thing that occurred when it would not restart, leading to the REM error screen. The entire process was out of my hands. The watch does it own updating, you can't "disable" updating. And, because there are no buttons, or keyboard, your at the mercy of the watch trying to do what it wants when it wants. Of course, Apple wants you do not be involved, they want their customers at the mercy of automation, blind little consumers. Much like on their Computer Systems, which "hides" a lot of the under-the-hood process (viewing of system files, access to root directories, command level control, etc. like on a Windows system where I can go directly to the file system and explore around.) That is why I currently run Windows on my MacBook Pro using Bootcamp which wasn't allowed for several years - forcing their Apple computer users to "only use" Apple iOS software - I think it was also because they "hardware walled" out consumers from using windows as well with proprietary processors (non-intel?) where Windows operating system lived. Then, apple switched to "intel" based chips, allowing Windows (only through Bootcamp OS manager software) to be used. That was when I purchased my first apple MacBook probably a 2015 model or so. I have a 2017 model now. I will admit their hardware (aluminum casing, etc. is sleek, durable, and of course the screen resolution retinal display, totally blew the HP's, toshiba, Dell, laptops out of the water. The resolution alone wasn't even matched for years by the other laptop manufactures. What do I have now 2880x1800 - absolutely beautiful screen for my photo video needs. Can't use anything less. Now, my story above was to demonstrate Apple's persistent desire to keep people contained with their equipment by insulating them from accessing admin level areas of their software and hardware. Which, keeps you buying and upgrading your iPhones, iWatches, etc. I mean, you have to use their iPhone in connection with the watch to simply access a local Starbucks wi-fi. I mean, so now your upgrading two products over the years: 1) your iphone and then 2) the watch. Your a wonderfully kept mouse in their hardware marketing consumer cage. Hey, what are they a Trillion dollar valued company now? In any case, the later generations "2000's series" adults who were born into the internet and Apple hardware cages don't really know what is going on. The only way you would would be to have grown up playing with MS-DOS computers, running basic programs, playing video games at an arcade, Radio Shack, Windows then comes out after MS-DOS operating system (designed by microsoft), etc. Then Apple, hardware locks you out, and now no discs, just wifi, online updating, can't control what gets updated when and - forever tracking of you online, purchases, software, keystrokes, searches, etc. So, now, given your phone. I remember how I mentioned it in my video. When the REM error occurred, it was like an "Air Bag" failure on a vehicle. Do you think Ford, Chevrolet, Honda, would say that "Oh well, your vehicle is out of warranty, so we are not going to fix a product defective Air Bag - Just take it to our dealership and we'll fix it for $857.28. Here, the apple watch defect is their software glitch resulting in the watch going into the REM state. Period. I'll encourage you, like the other's who have had success, to stick with it. Adjust your temper, and take it easy. And TRY (Call) AGAIN!. Be professional, polite, patient, use language like, "I'm really not in a position to pay $250 for a watch which is defective. Use the Air Bag example above. Get to know the person on the other line (not intimately) just treat them like a person - remember, they are recording the calls, and probably about three other people are listening in - the alleged supervisor, board co-workers, all probably "snickering" at one point because they have "heard it all." So, keep you story consistent during each call, call every other day, BOMBARD them with polite, calls, 1-3 hours worth. Like the Star War's Movies, Part 1, 2, 3, 4... Get names, first names probably or operator numbers - use them on each call. Dates, times, durations, keep a log (they are, your device has a nice little digital diary somewhere there on their servers ) when you called, your attitude, etc. They probably can pull up your other information about your phone, device, device history searches, etc. Consider this a game, maybe do searches online for Class action law suits, product defects "by apple" . Use Apple browser Safari. Make it easy for them to track you but now your showing them what you want them to track - Your serious, mature, and are willing to do what it takes to stand up for principles - if the watch is defective, you should not be responsible for any repair costs. They send you a box return shipping, all free. Then, they fix their problem internally. Remember, this is a TRILLION dollar company your dealing with - yet, it is just a company with no heart or soul. You, have passion, heart and soul. Keep ups updating with any progress you have. p.s.: By they way, before you call them - set yourself up to accomplish things other than what might be just passing an hour of your time on hold. 1. Use your favorite headset or speaker phone. That way you have some distance between you and the call vs. manually holding a phone to the side of your face. 2. Make your favorite drink (coffee, a protein shake, martini, bloody marry, Heineken beer, etc. 3. If you like spending time in the kitchen, make a lasagna, or some other meal that takes a while. 4. Get comfortable. Change into some comfortable clothes, or none, relax. 5. Get information about your phone, and watch. Model, date of purchase, serial number, etc. Photo graph it, type it up and email it to your self for reference now and later. 6. Log the calls - open your laptop up, and make notes during the call, nothing stenographic, just here and there. then copy paste it to an email, and put it under a special section in your email folders called Apple / Watch / 20210408_1000 Call to Support re 3rd Request to Fix - etc. Keep a simple journal. You will love it when you recall it back to the next caller - "I have called 10 times since April 1, 2021. My last call was with supervisor "Jeremy" who explained to me the watch was out of warranty and I would need to pay $325 for the projected repair. I'm calling to ask you to reconsider, the reason why is that the phone is defective, DEFECTIVE, DEFECTIVE DEFECTIVE, ... (remember, pepper that word all in the call professionally.) Pull up "defective Airbag Recall" lawsuits and incidents online, read their language - see how sympathetic the manufactures are when wanting to repair the vehicle - "go to your nearest dealer" - yes, defects do exist, and clever Apple tries to muddy the issue with words like "out of warranty" or "you did something to the watch" like skydive from 10000 feet in the air, when mountain climbing - Nope, I just woke up and there it was, REM Defective. Keep you story consistent. You get the point.

@@mikesmultimedia so update they ended up sending me to an Apple store to have a tech “look at it “ I knew from the gecko they were not going to be able to fix it there which they came back with a lame excuse again watch is out of warranty blah blah blah so I left went home wrote down everything you told me to tell them I was in the phone for an hour while they bounced me around finally got a senior tech on the line and after being polite and explained to him the catastrophic software failure he finally gave me a one time exception and waived me the repair fee he’s sending me my box on Monday free if charge they will replace it for me for free all thanks to you and your great advice to not give up and be persistent! Thank you so much 😊

"series 3 watch not repairable in India, ridiculous" my watch series 3 showing same red exclamation mark and won’t starting up. Surprisingly in INDIA they don't have official support centre or calling facility , they only have third party authorised service centre or call centre. i talked to senior tech on call and he said he cannot able to do anything but paid replacement

@@novoxrere only one. The first person couldn’t helped me then a supervisor came in and he arranged everything to get an appointment where they tried to diagnosed the watch, they couldn’t so they sent it to their facility and it came with a replacement. All of that within a week.

Apple have agreed to fix my Apple Watch , I recieved the box today. The delivery guy was in a huge rush so I could only put the watch into the white box and not the bigger brown one!!! What should I do? I hope Apple will accept the watch that way. I’m really worried

Sounds like a hectic, but successful day your having! First, congratulations on getting the process moving and having Apple fix the defective watch. Second. As far as when you hand something off to a FedEx driver is concerned. All the FedEx drivers eventually will have to drop back off at a central facility in your area, and they don’t move any of their boxes until certain pre-designated time so unless that was the issue, even if you had to drive it to a FedEx store most likely your box would’ve been on the same mass distribution facility later on that day. I think there’s an earlier cut off time for things that are going overnight or next day air, but generically like if I drop something off at a FedEx location nearby here, the main truck will come by and pick up all FedEx boxes from their satellite drop off points at pre-designated point somewhere in the late afternoon and then they take that to the central drop off facility somewhere in the city. Third. Regarding whether or not you packaged properly. Regarding whether or not you packaged properly. I’m hoping at least you put the reverse label onto the white box, I don’t think it matters at this point. If the FedEx guy took the box And scanned it into the system when he took it from you physically right there at that point at the door, then I think everything should be OK. Remember you can always go online and check the tracking later on to see it moving along in the system. Lastly. Keep us posted. We all like hearing the success stories for encouragement. look forward to you getting your watch back in a couple of days. Itdoesn’t take them that long once they get your watch. it’s pretty much a technical rebooting and reflashing of the ROM chip situation for them most likely.

@@EmerMcLaughlin sorry for the late response I just got your message. Basically what I mean by reverse label is there is a label underneath the label on the box that they sent you. If you peel off that label, underneath it, is the free return label back to the repair center. At least that’s how it was with me.

mikesmultimedia my series 1 stopped working after I updated. It doesn’t turn on. When I put it in charger the logo just keeps blinking. I tried force restarting but nothing helps. Contacted apple they said it needs to be repaired. I have to pay 250$ to repair. I said it wasn’t my fault, there is something wrong with the watch but they just kept repeating they can’t do it for free 🤦‍♂️ it sucks but can’t really do anything

@@mdimrankhan2129 Thanks for providing more details. i read in some of the other replies, that somebody called a little later and got another representative trying to fix their Apple watch which crashed after the update. Maybe after you've had a chance to let some time pass from your first call, and when you get another representative, you may be able to try a more delicate approach, and convincing and selling your case to the representative. remember the representative is getting paid to derail, discourage, and frustrate you through time and make you lose your patience. Then when you lose that patience, hang up the phone they have done their job. As I said one other member called and got another representative, they may have waited a day, allowed some time to cool off, and prepare themselves for good call, where they politely say hey look I've seen online that this is a inherent defect of the watch, all I'm asking you to do is to fix it like you fixed everybody else's watch. Can I please speak to a supervisor or someone who can understand what I'm talking about because this is not my fault, the watch, on its own internal software glitch, froze and crashed. Just like the watches that are online, and you fix them already as part of a defective repair request. So maybe you should also read through some of the all the replies here online, just to feed your mind and get some talking points and prepare for the call, because as you can see most likely you probably already spent some time just to get to a representative on the phone. Thanks again for sharing, I'm paying particular note on the circumstances which apple is trying not to repair this internal defective watch situation. And as I hear more and more, it makes me want to bump up the level of effort to make apple accountable to those watches which have fallen under this defective crash situation.

Had almost the same experience with the difference that they sent me an email after they got saying they couldn’t fix shit and now they’re shipping the watch back to me the same way it went with a letter with more information. Wtf?

Like I said, they are getting creative to evade accountability. If you can, email me a copy of the letter, I want to disect it and figure out their angle. That goes for anybody else who got some kind of denial, with an explanation. I think Apple will play off us one on one in isolation. But I will take this as far as I can until they give a real solution which I would think would be a replacement since they ¨couldn´t¨ fix my watch.

This happened to my apple watch series 3 and after fixing it and getting it to repair shop, guess what? Nothing happened! 😂 it pissed me off that much that I decided to just throw it away! 😂😂
