The Apple Watch Series 2 is a smart watch. But it's also a fitness band, gps watch, all day health tracker, and more. The watch is also now waterproof.
In this review, I take the Apple Watch Series 2 into the gym to test it's fitness capabilities and find out if this watch is enough for you to ditch your Fitbit, Garmin, or other fitness watch.

Hi, I have a question. I used the "other" workout once and I just set it to other because I was doing Zumba. The next time I tried to do it, it won't give me the option to name it anymore like basketball, HIIT, etc. How do I fix this?

Awesome in depth review from a real fitness enthusiast was just what I was looking for. Lots of reviews I've seen mention how inadequate the Apple Watch HR is for strength training but fail to mention you can easily pair with a Bluetooth HR strap. I'd be interested to see you review the Nike + Apple Watch Edition just to show the differences between the regular series 2 Apple Watch for working out and especially running. Keep up the good work!
@TechyAgent
@TechyAgent 7 жыл бұрын
+Jason C thanks for the compliment. The Nike version of the Apple Watch is really going to perform about the same, The only difference is that it comes with different watch straps and it has the Nike app built-in. Other than that, all of the sensors are exactly the same

+brian rosenberger right now I'm wearing the Garmin Fénix 5X, but I do miss my Garmin Vivoactive HR sometimes (it's much lighter and it has a touch screen). The Series 3 watch may or may not get dropped this Fall, but Apple keeps those kinds of things pretty secret. Depending on what they do with the next generation Apple Watch, I would be tempted to ditch the Fénix 5X if they offer some great upgrades in the health tracking department

Thanks for the review. It helped make my decision! I am moving away from a Garmin device since it (purposefully) lost read connection from my Wahoo heart rate chest strap. So, knowing the Apple Watch can connect directly to the strap and use that data for recording workouts is a MAJOR MAJOR advantage for me. I'm glad you spent time explaining this.

Is it possible to go for a run with the watch itself (no iPhone). listening to music and also that you are getting audio voice feedback of what your pace is?
@TechyAgent
@TechyAgent 7 жыл бұрын
+Javier Vargas good question! If you have a pair of Bluetooth headphones, they can pair with the built-in music player that downloads MP3s from your phone (Apple Music playlists). So you would be able to listen to music while you exercise without the phone. You would only be able to get audio feedback of what your pace is if you use an app that offers that feature. The native Apple apps don't, but the third-party applications that I haven't tested yet and may offer something like that.

In the gym setting does the Apple Watch just have lag or does it actually not give accurate information. Would it tell you that you burned fewer calories than you did?
@TechyAgent
@TechyAgent 7 жыл бұрын
+Wario Racer yes, both. It has lag and it's also missing the information during that lag, so it will give you fewer calories than you actually did. That's why I recommend using a chest strap or arm band accessory for weightlifting or CrossFit or Boot Camp style exercises. Heart rate sensor is much much more accurate for steady state cardio like running or hiking or cycling
@dave8m
@dave8m 7 жыл бұрын
Great review! I had the same issue with the OHR doing CrossFit workouts and Apple Health. But then I tried using the Under Armour record app with the OHR and it did much better. Maybe it is just my imagination or maybe they use different algorithms. I wanted to compare it with my Polar M600 using the Scosche Rhythm +...but couldn't get them to pair. May have to go get a Polar chest strap to compare.
@TechyAgent
@TechyAgent 7 жыл бұрын
+Dave Meyers yes, I had issues getting my rhythm plus to pair with the polar too, even though polar says they are not technically locking out third-party Bluetooth peripherals.

Would you recommend the Apple Watch series 2 or the Fitbit charge 2? I will mostly be walking on a treadmill, lifting weights at home, and doing exercise dvd's.
@TechyAgent
@TechyAgent 7 жыл бұрын
+MsPocahontasbeauty if you need any smart watch features at all, get the Apple Watch series 2. If you don't really need smart features and won't use them, it would be pointless to get the AW2, so I would recommend the Fitbit Charge 2 at that point. In many ways, they will be equally effective and accurate for things like the treadmill, lifting weights at home, and doing exercise DVDs. So the real question becomes about if you need smart watch features or not.
@MsPocahontasbeauty

+Joe Pickering in my mind, it may be a touch of using the Apple Watch is access to third party cycling apps like Strava which include native heart rate tracking using the Apple Watch sensor paired with Stravas own algorithms. Plus the Series two Apple Watch has gps, so you could use it independent of your phone (have your phone using the cyclemeter app while the Apple Watch uses Strava, and you can compare results)

Great review Eric! I just have a question: currently I own a Polar A360, which I use in the gym for weightlifting and strength training exercises. I really like the HR zones and graphs that Polar provide. However, I've just been bought the Apple Watch Series 2 as a gift, and am wondering if there's anything similar the Apple Watch can produce? Even if it's using a third party application? I don't suppose it'll work with the polar flow app, will it?
@TechyAgent

Thanks alot for your review man, nice, logical and focused. As i am also in a search for buying an activity tracker, pls could you give me your advice on Apple Watch 2 vs Garmin Forerruner 735xt? I need to constant monitor of my hr, from my wrist it would be more confortable, in exercises like: pool swim, treadmill, eliptical, cycling, trx, weight lifting and 24/7 calories burn. I an not a runner and i don't care about smart watch notifications, but if i have them is a plus, and also it seems that AW2 can monitor hr while swimming from the wrist. Or maybe another watch is more suitable for my needs? Thank you very much !
@TechyAgent
@TechyAgent 7 жыл бұрын
+Razvy Smith in my opinion, based on the exercises you listed, the Garmin 735xt is a much better fit. The AW2 is good, but it's doesn't have the accuracy and features of the Garmin. The Apple Watch 2 has a decent heart rate sensor but it will not track while swimming. The 735 has the ability to pair with a water proof chest strap that is offered by Garmin.
@calearazvan674

Thank you Eric! I know that is a way to change the metrics AW2 shows on the front screen when is locked, but if you say that underwater hr from wrist does not show on screen during swim...than you helped me alot on my decision. Garmin connect and more metrics details on Garmin watch it sounds like a good to go choice for my needs.

I'm looking to replace my Garmin 235 with an Apple watch for running, do you think I'll be missing any features?
@TechyAgent
@TechyAgent 7 жыл бұрын
+Bob Flavin yes, you will miss elevation info, heart rate graphs, max heart rate. With the aw2 you get pace for the whole run, but with Garmin you get slowest pace, fastest pace, average pace per mile, average pace overall. You also get speed information that is not provided by Apple Watch 2. If you won't need all of that extensive info, the aw2 is still a great product.

You suggest an external HR monitor of some sort. That's heart breaking, I don't want to look like I'm in the middle of getting operated on to go to the gym. To not be a walking HR sensor, do you know if the sensor in the Bose sound sport pulse work properly or will there be separately bundles of data if I go that route. I don't plan on using my series 2 without my phone.

Only reason I am purchasing an Apple Watch is, I simply couldn't achieve a seal with the Soort Elite, but using them for a week in the gym has me hooked to utilize tracking and logging of data. So I thought I could use whatever other headphone I wanted with the Apple Watch Bc it's supposed to monitor. But in reality to get any accuracy, and I hope the pulse will act as the external sensor I need, just replaced 250 worth of buds for 600 worth in my ear and on my wrist.

@TechyAgent

+Priyank Bahl I think the new charge 2 would be great for 24 seven tracking, maybe up there with the best. As far as lifting, the built-in optical sensor will probably lag a little bit. But it will be close enough to get a rough idea of how many calories you burn during a lifting session

Runtastic and Runtastic Pro DO access the Watch's built-in heart rate sensor. Runtastic offers a large collection of very helpful metrics when using the Apple Watch, making it my exercise app of choice for the Watch. I did contact Endomondo about plans to update their software to take advantage of the Apple Watch heart rate sensor. They said, "We have no immediate plans. Perhaps in the future." Odd and disappointing response. Deleted Endomondo for now. BTW, I've mentioned this before, but the performance of the Apple Watch heart rate sensor for weights is improved if the Watch is placed higher up the arm. I use a wrist sweat band to prevent it from sliding down my arm. I am guessing this puts the Watch in a region of your arm where blood flow is not as constricted compared to low on your arm by the wrist. That restriction would totally jank-up the optical sensors ability to read changes in blood flow. Maybe this "trick" only works for me. The heart rate sensor is spot-on for me when hiking, running, and biking (indoors on trainer, or outdoors). Cheers!
@TechyAgent
@TechyAgent 7 жыл бұрын
+Mr. Luigi awesome, thanks for the helpful info. I haven't tried runtastic, but it's good to see that they are taking advantage of the access to the hardware of the AW2. Your trick of placing the Watch higher up is a legitimate way to get more accurate results for many people. It still won't be as accurate as an external sensor, but it will help considerably. Again, appreciate the comment!

Thanks for the review! Basically GPS is the big draw for the new Apple Watch since the old one was fairly water proof anyway. For me I never leave my phone behind so I don't mind not having GPS in the watch. I am not a big swimmer and I already find the screen bright enough on version 1 so I guess I will be waiting to see what Apple does with the Apple Watch 3 when it comes out in 2018 ;)

Did you also mention that the 5 hour battery life is only if you use the watch gps without the phone around? Misleading if you didn't. The watch is designed to use the phones gps if around and use its onboard gps if it is not around. Without a phone is 5 hours. With a phone (like most will use it) is much much longer. I for one listen to my music with my phone on my lower back in a flipband so it is always around. I do agree with 3rd party apps being a key player in the fitness part since apples onboard app has always been too limited. Also, if you use an actual heart rate monitor, since wrist is iffy at times with any brands wrist monitors, 3rd party apps have no issues getting data which I believe you implied with your emphasis on external HR monitors. Nice review though. Informative and what I was looking for
