In this video, we'll be conducting an initial set of systematic tests on two new models of Apple Watches, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and the Apple Watch Series 9. The aim is to evaluate the heart rate measurement performance, oxygen saturation measurements, and the GPS tracking accuracy of these watches. For the heart rate measurements, we’ll do these tests on both myself and Theresa, in various exercise settings such as indoor and outdoor cycling, running, and weight lifting. Our aim is to determine whether these new models have improved functionalities over their predecessors, and the standardized nature of these tests will provide you with an initial credible basis for comparison. So, without further ado, let’s get started.
Hello everyone, for those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob, and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. In this video we will be doing a first set of tests on the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Apple Watch Series 9. Now, today's video differs slightly from our usual format. Instead of performing all tests first then shooting the video, I'll be picking up my newly released Apple Watches today, performing the tests, analyzing the results, and sharing them with you as I am doing them. Additionally, this testing process isn't limited to myself, Theresa here will also help out. I've purchased two Apple Watch Series 9's; a 41mm version for Theresa and a 45mm version for myself. Additionally, I've ordered an Apple Watch Ultra 2, which I'll mostly test on myself, but I'll also use it for some of Theresa's tests. To start, we'll focus on the heart rate performance. But first, I need to pick up the watches from the Apple store, so let's head out!

I've got some ideas for your videos: 1) A comparison of cheap and expensive chest straps for HR and HRV. 2) A comparison of apps to measure heart rate through the phone camera (Google Fit does it, Welltory claims to measure heart rate variability too). See if they are reliable. 3) Suggestions and ideas on how to use data from these devices to improve our daily life. I'd love to hear your perspective on this and what do you use them for. Do they help you exercise better? Sleep better? What's the best use of these devices? I have a smartband that tracks me but I'm not sure of what do to actively do with the data. It tells me how I slept or exercised but it doesn't necessarily help me to do better. What do you think?

Hi Rob, great review as always! Something I structurally miss in your reviews is SpO2 measurements during sleep. For people with sleep apnea and related issues this is a very important feature. For instance my Garmin Forerunner 745 does a pretty decent job here. Something to consider for future reviews or maybe a good subject on it's own.

@TheRussianLobster by the chart here it's over 97 percent accurate and you take those random spikes away and it's pretty dead on. Nobody is going to look at their watch at 120bpn, see it instantly go to 160, and down to 120 again and believe that it actually did it. A few bpm off won't kill you. People get too hung up on stats. It's a great watch.

Hey Rob, a great challenge that I've been experiencing and that would make an excellent video is the distance measurement made in open water swimming. I'm a sea swimmer and in my training group I'm the only one with an Apple Watch Ultra, so our distances always differ by more than 1000 meters. There was a training session few weeks ago where we did the exact same route and the difference in measurement was 800 meters (for swimming, that's quite a lot). I saved this training data and maps and took them to an Apple Store, they gave me a new device, and the difference decreased but continues long. Garmin seems to be the most accurate in this scenario. I don't know if it would be possible to do this test, but I think it would be excellent content.

Awesome work Rob, you rock!! 👍 Quick questions: 1. What firmware was used in these first initial tests? Latest v10.0.1 firmware? 2. Do you plan on re-visiting(re-test) any of the older models, like the 2022 SE model, now that they have a new OS firmware update released? I'm particularly interested to see if sleep stage detection and heartrate detection has been improved with latest v10 firmware updates! 😉

@@TheQuantifiedScientist Btw. Rob, you can save time and money on airplane flights, if you instead do the spo2 tests at night when you sleep. Spo2 levels should follow the heartbeat rate and breaths. So, any inaccuracies in the test device should be equally well exposed(compared to flight sessions ) in this "test environment" as well. But is "free" to do! And seeing as most people will probably use Spo2 readings to primarily track their sleep quality anyway, you get a more "usefull" test parameter in your review this way....in my humble opinion, of course! 😉 Ps: Thanks for the clarification of what firmware was installed in the Apple watches! 👍

I like your videos and am a regular viewer , but I would like to raise a critical thought: If you say, that "more testing is definately needed" - that raises the question whether you focused on uploading the video as fast as possible, on the cost of being as accurate as possible. I find it difficult, precisely because your approach is to create scientific reviews. I know its really important to produce content as close as possible to the release date of the hardware, but please dont lower your standards. I really enjoy your channel very much!

There were 3 spots that would regularly put me running through tall buildings on OS9 and after I updated to OS10 the run accuracy was much better. I no longer went through those buildings but along the actual boardwalk path.

I personally think that would make a huge difference, because elastic bands make sure there is tension at any time and make sure theere is contact between sensor and the skin all the time. The sudden drops in heart rate could come from burps. I know it sounds strange but I always get them with my heart rate chest device when i have to burp, maybe the air distorts the signal

Could you make a review for the RingConn Smart Ring? It seems interesting since it doesn't have a monthly subscription like the Oura ring.

I am winter runner and I got a problem with my apple watch 7 that it stops tracking heart rate in cold conditions like -5C outside while I am running.

Can't wait for you're Fitbit Charge 6 review when they release it! According to a Verge Article "Fitbit says the Charge 6 features the most accurate heart rate sensing of its fitness bands, with up to a 60 percent improvement on intense activities like HIIT, spinning, and rowing. The device takes measurements once per second during exercise and once every five seconds outside of workouts." Excited to see how they fair!

As a AWU user I still miss some Health Metrics like Body Battery / Training Readiness etc. I have installed both Athlytics and Training Today apps but not sure how reliable they are as a complement to the raw data from the watch. Any chance for a test? 😊

I wear AWU and Garnin 965. Garmin software does a much better job of interpreting the metrics. Apple needs to revise the Health app completely. What are your thoughts on accuracy when wearing the watches on the inside of wrists? Apple recommends on top of wrist.

Really wished Garmin's had the HR measurements of Apple or the Apple Watch had the sports analysis like Garmin
