My cousin and I saw Toy Story 4 in the movie theater, and when it ended he knew I was a fan of Apple so he mentioned how Steve Jobs made Pixar possible. I had no idea at all about Steve’s involvement and I didn’t believe him. After a quick search on my iPhone, I discovered it was all real. A movie production company I grew up loving and continuing to love in adulthood was actually another business reinvented thanks to not only creative computing, but also Steve’s intuition that technology married to humanities and arts was a formula for magic.

When I was young, I was so surprised to learn that Steve actually kickstarted, funded, and led Pixar after getting fired at Apple and starting Next. I never would have guessed that the guy who mad Apple successful was also part of what made Pixar successful. What's even more surprising was that Pixar isn't even a consumer goods company. They're not even a services company. The only had the technology and didn't know what to do with it. It's a good thing Steve allowed Lasseter and the rest of the team to create animated stories. I remember reading somewhere that Steve did that because he knew that's what the team was passionate about doing. So he put in even more money to help them get started on making animated shorts. Even then, Steve understood the potential of people's passions and crazy ideas. What I'm interested in now is how Steve's relationship with Disney went before, during, and after their partnership and acquisition. I remember reading Michael Eisner and Steve constantly butt heads around the turn of century. This in part how Eisner lost faith in Pixar despite raking in so much revenue for Disney. But when Eisner was finally ousted, thanks to Roy E. Disney and his team, Bob Iger was able to right the wrongs Eisner made in his tenure as CEO. That included repairing the rift between Pixar and Disney and, by extension, between Steve and Disney. Since being instated as Apple's CEO, Steve became busy in running the company what with all the success of the iMac, iPod, and macOS X. He didn't have much time for Pixar. So he knew it would be a good deal to sell it to Disney instead. The deal would be announced around early January 2006, well into the development of the iPhone and, unfortunately, well into the development of Steve's pancreatic cancer. The day Steve and Bob were to announce the acquisition deal, Steve took Bob aside and revealed theat his cancer had come back. He did this as a final warning to Bob, giving him one last chance to back out from the deal. Fortunately, Bob was determined to see it through. I'm always so interested in Steve's realtionship with Pixar and Disney. There's so much history between them. We've barely even scratched the surface. I also believe that Walt Disney and Steve Jobs were similar in a lot of ways in terms of being a leader, company owner, and visionary. Both died at their prime.

It's funny how people are discreting Jobs with how he is just a Marketing person and doesn't know how to Engineer, Develop or Design. I didn't know til maybe a few years ago that Steve Jobs was the first CEO of Pixar, and when I found that out, it both blew my mind, and also made me go "Well, I guess I'm not surprised". But man talk about a great resume to have. Not only did you start Apple, the most profitable tech company in the business, but you also co-founded Pixar, one of if not the most successful animation studios in the world; the very company that time and time again has brought Disney out of it's own self imposed Dark Age. Like damn, next you're gonna tell me he cured cancer through cunnilingis. (I'm obviously overexaggerating, I know the man wasn't perfect or a God, but talk about accomplishments)

It’s worth noting that George Lucas was also in the bitter end of a nasty divorce and on top of that being the independent filmmaker he was, wasn’t making a whole lot off his independent company he spent so long setting up to do Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Willow. He needed some cash because his movies were too expensive, and too far and in between to turn a profit. Funny though he still refers to Pixar as “my company”

I think we pander to Steve Jobs too much. Yes, the man was a genius, and yes, he was integral in the Pixar story, but he certainly didn't "start" Pixar. Ed Catmull, the actual founder of Pixar, explained it all in his book "Creativity Inc." He'd wanted to make a computer-animated movie since he was a young kid. Through the book you can see that computer-animated cartoons weren't a matter of "if", but "when." Ed, John Lasseter, and Steve Jobs just happened to be at the helm at the time. And Job's main input, actually his biggest contribution, was financial aid, and choice advice on when Pixar went public ( before the Disney deal, etc). Again, no disrespect to the man, but the Pixar story LARGELY happened because of the tenaciousness of Ed Catmull and John Lasseter, not Steve Jobs.
