Most of us are familiar with iMessage. If you have an Apple device you’ve almost certainly used it. iMessage is the app that allows you to send texts to and from various Apple devices like the iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch. Launched in 2011, the app comes as standard with Apple’s line of products and since it’s release has shown itself to be a leader in its field, batting off competitors like Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger and Viber. Considering these were originally built by companies whose sole purpose was to create the best messaging app possible, it’s pretty impressive that iMessage surpassed all of its competitors and remains popular today. In fact, some may have expected Apple to put messaging on the back burner while focusing on more important iOS features. But they took the exact opposite approach and it’s really paid off. People have cited iMessage as the primary reason why they continue to buy iPhones. But why is iMessage so popular and what makes it so much better than Android? Well that’s exactly what I’m going to explain.

@@michelforgues7759 No not really and thirty seven others (as of 6:15pm my time on the 19th) seem to agree. Other previous videos, such as the creation of the iPhone which is one of my favorites delve into the behind the scenes back and forth. About how a problem was identified, people, resources and philosophy were pulled together to create a better product than was out at the time and sent the cellphone world in an entirely new direction. What we did not get was however many minutes of ranting about how all other cellphones at the time of 2007 and prior were garbage, were trash, were awful and the iPhone was just so much better. Your videos usually are known for their details, being informative and for an Android guy like myself I can finish watching one of your videos and have an appreciation for Apple (a company I often don't think about much otherwise). Your iMessage video left me still just wondering what makes iMessage more special than any other texting app? So bubbles come in either blue or green? Was their a texting problem the world was dealing with prior that Steve had to swoop in and save us from? I'd also refer you to your video on the design philosophy of Johnny Ives. I've never felt one way or another about design aesthetics so long as the overall look was good and cohesive. But even though I'm an Android guy, I've got an original iPod Touch gifted to me for my birthday in a drawer. I can remember wondering why Apple didn't just go with a flat menu of icons and instead the icons look like their function - a stock ticket for stocks, a shelf for books and newspapers, a sun for the weather, a gear for settings. Your video on Johnny Ives and why things should reflect what they do and his nack for simplicity instead of covering things in a beige box with a plethora of buttons was very informative. Because of that video I understand why Apple and the market moved towards simple and graceful designs. Yet no ranting on appearances of devices that came before...

It's basically not that, really. Restoring stuff on an iPhone is more comprehensive compared to setting up a new Android phone. On my Note 20 Ultra, signing into my Google and Samsung account doesn't restore everything. On my iPhone, all my apps (and their data) are restores and put in the same location as before. Same wallpaper. Same app positions. Same app folders I had set up before. All of it restored. That's never been the case on any Android phone I've used. Around my early 20's, when I was a student and had a sh*tton of free time, I felt the same as you. I bought some Android, customized it, changed the default launcher or even the ROM. I just wanted to customize that phone and push to its absolute limit, that was my entertainment. I had to buy a new phone pretty often because after a relatively short period of time they stopped releasing OS updates and I wanted those new features badly without using a custom ROM. By the time I got a job as a software developer, and been through several Android devices, I felt less and less motivated to go through that customization process each time I got a new device. Those custom launchers and the stuff I installed really dragged the phone down sometimes. At that point I just wanted something that works, feels smooth, does not slow down over time (not sure slowing down is still a thing on Android, but back then it was), just something that enables me to be creative and get stuff done. So I got an iPhone to try it out. I loved the experience, the beautiful animations and the buttery smooth UI. I left my last Android on stock settings, I haven't even changed the wallpaper, so the lack of the customization I got used to wasn't a problem on iOS. I'm still an Apple user since then, got some frustration over the years, not gonna lie, but as a person who likes seamless integration of their device on OS LEVEL not by installing 3rd party stuff, I'm not gonna move back. Forgot to mention, I was a HUGE Apple hater and Android fanboy back then. It's funny how things have changed. Just wanted to share my point of view az a lazy phone person, no offense. Well, in this video that actually made sense. Don't get me wrong, I'm all Android (Samsung), and I choose it on purpose - because I want to control everything. It's true however that most of the people don't. And I'm also not sure regarding this overpriced argument - if you count price/support_date then it looks like Android is this more expensive choice per year (of course if you're going to use iPhone until the end).

In the world (outside the USA) WhatsApp is the most used messaging app. I live in Switzerland and I haven't used iMessage in years. WhatsApp has many advantages: - it works the same on iOS and Android. The UI is a bit different but the features are identical, even the emojis are the same - you can use it on the computer via WhatsAppWeb or WhatsAppDesktop which works really great and on the Apple Watch you can quick reply to messages, so it's just as seamless as iMessage - WhatsApp is completely free whereas SMS isn't - WhatsApp has the option to take phone or video calls just like FaceTime - most importantly WhatsApp has so many useful features. Pretty much all of the new features of iOS 14 iMessage were in WhatsApp for years, plus there are many exclusive ones like Live Location sharing which can be really useful (tracking kids or old people with an app that is already installed) If you don't use WhatsApp you're an outsider. If you want to organize something you can create a group chat and rely on the fact that everyone has WhatsApp because it doesn't depend on the device someone's using. I don't know a single person in my area who doesn't use WhatsApp as their main messaging app. iMessage is just an American thing I guess.

Must be a US American thing. Waaay back when I used an iPhone (I think it was a 4S), and my mom got an iPad for work or something, but still used a regular phone, I had this experience that, sometimes, when I tried to text her, the text would be snatched up by her iPad using iMessages rather than actually sending an SMS to her phone like I intended, so I wasn't actually sure if she'd seen the SMS. Long story short, I got annoyed at "random Apple developer #37" for making a clumsy texting app, turned off the iMessages functionality, and kept on texting. Later on, with a different phone plan, and internet IM's being a cheaper option for texting (think I had an iPhone 5S at this point), I downloaded one of those (can't remember if it was Skype, or Facebook Messenger, but one of those). Now, I'm an Android guy. Rocking a Oneplus 8, and sure, while Apple makes "nice looking" stuff, I'd rather have something I can adjust to what I want, rather than something that's been carefully crafted to fit what an engineer in California thinks I want (because, if we're honest, how would an engineer in the US possibly know the specific wants of a random guy in Denmark?).

Here’s the simple explanation for all of us non americans: America started pretty early to communicate with text messages since it was basically free with most flatrates. Since iMessage basically just feels like an extension of text messages on your phone but works on all other devices, it just sneaked it’s way in to becoming so popular. In Europe for the longest time text messages were expensive and flatrates weren’t that popular. That’s why we switched to WhatsApp early on. And that’s why basically nobody uses iMessage in Europe. Basically for most Americans it would be to much of a struggle to switch to anything but text messages at this point where as it’s an equally big struggle to Switch from WhatsApp to anything else at this point as a non American

iMessage is popular in the US is because other countries do not have (or had) unlimited/free texting. When I was in the UK in the late 2000s, Orange charged for messaging past a low amount, like 50. Came back to the US, Cingular (now ATT) had it as a part of unlimited data (before smartphones got popular). Hence, this trained people in the US to depend on regular SMS. Our neighbors across the waters NEEDED an alternative... We did not. My android friends here still use SMS because it is ready right of the box... like iMessage.

I would just like to point out that Japan, the country you made a video on about being iPhone fans, use Line app exclusively. China uses WeChat, South Korea uses Kakao Talk, India, Brazil and most of Europe uses Whatsapp. That's a solid chunk of the world population using chat apps. It is so weird hearing about using iMessage. Are people perfectly fine with not talking to anyone who uses a different brand of phone from you? At least the Japanese have the intention to be inclusive despite being on iOS. Chat apps are certain problematic in their own ways, but at least they're not exclusionary. I've wondered what would happen if Apple sold a paid iMessage app for Android. They'd make bank on the app, but they'd lose a bunch if iPhone sales by doing it. Apple knows they're keeping customers by making iMessage locked into their ecosystem.

After this video i think you didn't even hold android phone in hand. Booting android for the first time is as simple as booting iphone for the first time. You just login to your google account and that's it. You automatically have same apps, same ringtone, same wallpaper, everything. And to achieve all of imessages things just using messenger or whatsapp (witch you probably already have on your phone) and turning on sms synchronization.

@DEECEE000

It’s not as easy as setting up an apple device. You always have to login by google. Where as with an iPhone, you have multiple ways of setting it up. It’s a choice left to the person getting the phone. The reason most people love iPhone is because iPhone is way easier to use. I’m not an apple fan, I’m just telling from experience. 💁‍♂️

That’s not quite the case. Before switching to iPhone I used to be an android user and I changed phones a lot. I never had the seamless experience you’re talking about here. Even by importing my google account and having backed up everything I couldn’t have all those things I had in my previous phone. Setting up my new Android phone was always a time consuming thing and such a hassle. Now with Apple it’s a totally different experience.

Fun fact: That's not true. The best messaging app ever made to date is Telegram. Discord is such a UX nightmare. Maximum file size is 8MB... And having to pay monthly for 50MB... Yeah. Compare that to WhatsApp's 100 MB size limit. Or even Telegram's 2 GB file size limit.

I'm, sadly, a android person, since my first phone. In the beginning I didn't like Apple at all. But after some time, I researched and looked on the web, why so many people (and some family members) use iPhones, iPads etc. Now I know and since some years I tried to get my hands on one. All the struggle with bugs, no updates (nor security updates), the whole inconsistence in the designs, the whole always customize struggle is such bullshit, that I got myself an iPhone. I want a phone that works and is perfect in the design, and not inconsistent, laggy, unfinished and more.
