Have to 100% disagree about the "there needed to be a reason why Hope Hallow became depressed" argument. The whole point is that it was a very mundane drift apart and falling out, not a huge cataclysmic event like the rainbow generator failing or what have you. It IS relatable, even actionable. It's so much more realistic and interesting than some big bad.

I completely agree. I started seeing greys after years simply putting my head down and going through the motions at work. You don't really notice it when it happens. It just becomes.. normal after a while. It was only after attending Everfree Northwest and being surrounded in bright colors and nice people for 3 days that I finally noticed something was wrong.

The interesting thing about hopeless magic is that we do as you said see the same symptoms at other times with at least Pinkie and Dash having their colours fade when they're feeling particularly sad and miserable. In response to your comments if an entire town lost hope it could potentially draw the colour out of the surrounding area as we see Pinkie literally draining the colour and life out of flowers or Dash landing on a white cloud that turns gray and starts raining when she curls up on it. Ponies have a huge impact on their environment (growing things, changing the weather and the like).

I remember the first time I went to Everfree Northwest, it was entirely a spur of the moment decision. I was going through a rough patch. Work was overly demanding and unfulfilling, slowly killing off my sense of self worth with empty promises and unexpected lectures for things beyond my control. They would call me in on days off and I had to cancel any plans I had. My friends stopped inviting me to stuff and it became a "joke" of mine that the days I had off were "theoretical until after 6PM". If I tried to call in sick, my boss would 20 questions me like I was just trying to slack off (despite the fact that I was The employee they knew they could always count on to show up). My boss even made it my responsibility to call my replacement to tell them to come in. Not something you want to do when you are trying not to throw up or have a fever. My life was a never ending string of stress and monotony and that's even without all the stuff my sister was up to at the time. The one thing that seemed to bring me even a little bit of joy anymore was watching My Little Pony every week. So when I learned there was a pony convention in my state, I made it my mission to get there. I managed to successfully get 3 days off in a row (pure miracle) and had to make cab and bus arrangements when I found out a friend didn't want to go with me. When I finally got there, it was like world had much more vibrant colors and a sparkle filter. Everything was so pretty, there were so many people just talking ponies, MA Larson was working the check in stand (eeeeeee), it was just so wonderful. Everyone was so nice and I lost my mind in giddiness just from the vendors hall. As I made my way home Sunday night, my whole body was abuzz with what a truly wonderful time I had. Then, the withdrawls kicked in. The farther I got from Seattle, the more I started noticing that the beautiful landscapes were... grey. This suprised me since I always figured grey vision was just a stylistic choice in media when you wanted to convey sadness. I didn't think it was an actual thing that could happen. But apparently it did. And then I started crying. As my bus passed right by my work building, I felt like a black hole opened in my gut and was trying to suck me in. This was the moment I truly realized how miserable I had become. So I started job searching. I found a therapist that I could just meet with and talk to. It took longer than I wanted to find a new job but I eventually found a much nicer place and, at my therapist's suggestion, I cut a few other things out of my life that I didn't need. I'm in a much better place now. I go back to Everfree every year as well. And, you'll be happy to know, I haven't seen that hideous grey filter since.

One of the things I like in this is the tiny bit of actual science tossed in. Part of the reason that flower petals are so bright and flowers smell as strongly as they do is to attract pollinators like butterflies and honey bees. It's why if a people put food coloring into hummingbird feeders (bright, lively colors attract them too). If they lost their colors it'd be easy to see them being as drawn to the town.

I enjoyed how a random attendee at the final BronyCon played Living In Color on his own portable speaker while many of us were waiting for the Exhibit Hall to open. What a way to pass the time! Find it unique that aside from a re-colored Big Mac, Lyra, and Bon-Bon in Hope Hollow. Mayor Sunny Skies and his special pony Petunia are basically Wisconsin-ish Sunburst and Spitfire respectively.

Very insightful and you always have something for us to leave with at the end. :) I wanted to put this out there: I learned very early on in my life that giving a small act of kindness, even a simple smile, to strangers can make their day better. You'll likely never learn of it, but that doesn't mean that it's a worthless thing to do. On that note, near the end of your analysis @Applegeek, my mind wandered to when my mother first decided to go to the parish we've been going to for Masses for more than a decade now. The very first Mass we went to in this new parish, on Christmas I think it was (I was pretty young at the time), the priest announced that he was having trouble paying for the bills the parish had because they spent so much money helping others. I've heard many stories where the priest used money out of his own pocket to help others in need. I also loved that he allowed small children to come to him during Mass and give him a hug (even if it was technically against the rules to do so); I always ended up smiling at every Mass I went to because of that. Long story short, he is an inspiration to me, and always will be. I will never forget how he lived as pastor (he was forced to retire a few years ago, unfortunately). I don't know if he ever learned how much he did for my family or for the numerous families he helped as pastor, but he is still someone I look up to and respect. I have such fond memories of him. Thank you for reminding me of that :)

This is what happens when people lose their sense of community. They feel alone and lose hope. This often happens when communities lose a lot of people or when things that people enjoyed are lost. In this case, when people kept leaving their town and everyone began losing their sense of community, they lost hope. This is what to many neighborhoods during the quarantine. So many events that gave people a sense of belonging and the feeling of having friends around them died out and were forgotten. Many people have forgotten what it felt like to be a member of a community or to have people around to support you.

I think she didn't keep the billboard from falling was because when Twilight panics, she doesn't think straight. At least here, she was focusing on her friend's safety. We people tend to not do the more logical thing when we panic about something, so I don't see that as a flaw in a sense, more of a actual reaction someone might have in a situation like that. Plus, it was nice to see Twilight teleport in this 'art' style.

As much as this looked like the movie, for me it felt a lot like an episode. And I agree, the twins and Dash could've done some more moves before the final boom. I've heard rumors that Boulder Media will be doing G5. This could've been their "proof of concept". "Can you do this? Great! You got the contract!"

I was waiting for you to react to this and I enjoyed meeting you at BronyCon, all three different times. All the new characters that were introduced I really enjoyed. I loved Kerfuffle and Petunia a lot, just such great and wonderfully warm personalities. The Hoofingtons were nice and added an upperclass feel but enjoyed the rustic settings and were quite charming once they got over their own little issues. The twins were wonderful and adorable, especially with RD doing her best to help train them. It made me really proud of her. I also really liked Torque Wrench (and yes, there is some GREAT fan art of her, just check Google) and how she was a fix-it pony by trade whereas Applejack was skilled because it was a necessity of working on the farm. Moody Root was nice, and correct me if I am wrong, but I was certain I picked up a faint Scottish or Irish accent in his voice. And then, of course, the mayor.....Sunny Skies. A great character with a great love for his town and neighbors and just wanting them to be happy. I also like how he got nervous around Petunia, a bit adorkable if you ask me. I hope to see some of these characters in some of the upcoming episodes. I have my doubts, but one can always Hope.

Which means the colour-drain happened before Sunny turned on the Rainbow Generator. It was actually "hopeless magic", caused by the town's ponies giving up on each other. Seeing the generator destroyed was the last straw. Also, we have seen magic like this before: Pinkie numerous times, and Twilight back in The Return of Harmony - Part 2. 53:07-53:25 The Hoofingtons reconnect with some of their other neighbours and get their colours back. Also, Applegeek's reaction. 53:14 "Yummylicious." 53:35-53:49 Kerfuffle gets some new customers, who then get their colours back. 54:42-54:46 More and more ponies getting their colours back. 55:20-55:27 "As proud as a two-tailed peacock" XD. He also talks about how a little thing he did for someone at last year's BronyCon made a significant difference in their life. Overall, this special was interesting to say the least. If this is what the future holds in store for MLP G5 it may take some getting used to. The ToonBoom animation is impressive and certainly improves upon the regular Adobe Flash. But at the same time it has something of a simplistic feel to it. The style reminded me a lot of the previous My Little Pony generations. It's the same with the writing. I did enjoy the story and characters - especially as they all had time to shine and show what progress they've made. But the plot seemed rather straight forward. Like Applegeek said, the town and its ponies started changing before the colour faded, but it was never really explained why. Also, I was surprised to learn there was no villain in this special - even though it would've made things too similar to The Cutie Map. Every conflict seemed to be resolved relatively easy. I know almost nothing about G5 and I'm looking forward to it. I just hope they're not planning to aim it solely at very young children; Friendship is Magic always knows how to challenge its audience. Anyway, that's all I have to say for this special. Let's get back to the main series and see what other surprises it has in store.

It’s a small detail but I like how they did it, the weight of them on her back probably would’ve made her crash with them, but instead she grabbed them by the sweater.
