I think the most interesting element of Spike is how he's matured in regards to Twilight. At the start of the series he was Twilight's assistant-slash-surrogate child who frequently napped and snacked and otherwise acted like a kid. But over time he's grown up and his dynamic with her has shifted to more of a little brother dynamic, and even kinda beyond that to just Twilight's friend and roommate. He does chores, he has to mind her and keep her focused and calm, he can snark to her and get some back. And along the way he's developed stories and relationships of his own like Thorax, Ember, and the Crystal Empire. Spike has grown in a lot of great ways over the series and these wings were long overdue for him.

When you started going over Spike's development, something hit me like a ton of bricks. I always kind of understood where Spike was coming from. He is a baby and growing up can bring terrifying to little ones and anything embarrassing is some of the worst possible things! But some of his fears didn't seem to fit that. Then it hit me: he's a foster child. Foster children/ adopted children must live with the shadow that they were chosen every day. I think adoption is wonderful but to the young children in that position, I can't imagine how terrifying the thought of the people you've come to love deciding that they changed their mind. Owl's well that ends well: the parents find out they're having a biological baby. The identity crisis episodes: wondering where he comes from since he was given up as a baby and wondering how what he finds will fit in with his family. His fear of Twilight getting rid of him: foster kids are moved around all the time. It's a sad fact. Until the permanent adoption papers are signed, nothing is set in stone and all the kids can do is be on their best and hope that leads to the best. I am very disappointed that I saw none of this before...

This might've been under the radar, but I thought it was fitting that the first one to see Spike with his new wings was Twilight. She was the one that hatched him, so it's only fitting that she'd be nearby when he grew his wings...even if she didn't see the actual moment it happened. Dumb bird took that part away lol

Rocs (originally a Persian word, 'Ruks') are gigantic, eagle-like birds that hail from Middle Eastern mythology. The famous adventurer, Sinbad encountered one in his original tale. These birds were so vast that their wingbeats could create small hurricanes capable of leveling villages, and thier typical prey was said to be elephants. Though most depictions merely stated them to be giant eagles, some said they had sharp teeth inside thier beaks, and that thier tongues were forked like a snake's. As a mythology dork, I squee every time this show features cryptids and monsters. Also hell yes, Spike's deserved wings for several seasons, now.

Spike with wings looks cool! Like a true dragon yeah! Obviously, he get his wings by natural way, but Spike, as one of the main characters in the story, went the big way and learned many lessons, like Twilight and friends, and grew up morally. She said that it was her "big brother" (also, she was still living with him, so she had not experienced the molt herself); so it must be a much older, bigger dragon than Garble (who seems to be as older as Ember). -> Since the molting process just takes a few days, Smolder must have passed through it sometime in between S6E06 [she was not "summoned" by Firelord Torch, or she managed to resist the calling] and this episode (that has a minimum of "a few months" since Rarity mentioned the episode were she lost most of her mane).

you know you mentioned that maybe its time he noticed rarity isn't that into him and I actually think that was brought up last epsiode in the break up break down when at the end he was wondering if skelanor was gonna be in the game. I really enjoyed this episode, one of my favorites since “Surf and/or Turf!” Getting all these callbacks from previous seasons was pretty cool, like seeing Peewee again after the longest time, Zecora’s shampoo, Shadow Spade, etc. Seeing Spike growing into his new self was quite the experience. It was nice that Smolder gave us some intel on more dragon lore such as the fact that there are other ways that dragons mature. Another thing from my S8 wishlist was seeing more mythical creatures like the Roc(which really surprised me) and that’s another win for me! I honestly didn’t expect Spike to grow wings, though I wasn’t entirely blind on the fact since I ran into a spoiler image in a S8 promo before this episode aired. I’m guessing that dragons start out as wingless lizards and require their parents to transport them on their backs until they go through the molt effect and the sprout wings. Anyways, this was a very nice Spike episode and reaction too!

3:37 unless you count last episode, where he played a big part 10:45 so, dragons kick their defenseless children out to fend for themselves when the children reek of a smell that attracts predators ten times their size? How has the dragon species survived this long? With the odds of young dragons vs giant predators, their whole race should've gone extinct by now. And no, they couldn't rely on their fire belches because they can't control them until AFTER the Molt is finished. 13:08 usually when someone is having hearing problems, they'll talk louder than they need to so they can hear themselves clearer. Rarity mentioned hearing issues earlier in the episode. 15:08 again, HOW has the dragon species survived this long if they kick their defenseless children out to fend for themselves when THAT is after them?! 16:53 ya know... I realized, counting this episode, the 2 most recent episodes where Zecora plays a part has had something bad happen to her that is out of her control and could end in disaster. First she gets Swamp Fever and almost ended up a tree and this time she gets captured by a giant bird that eats meat. I'm starting to notice a pattern that I do not approve of 😒.

When Smolder said "I've seen a lot of molts in my time but yours take the cake", I wonder if the fact that Spike's molt is this powerful could be a bit of fringe brilliance, because that could come all the way back to Season 1. Remebmer the episode the Cutie Mark Chronicles, Twilight as a filly did make Spike hatch, but then turned into a huge dragon--to the point that Celesta had to calm Twilight down to make everything normal. Sure, it's pretty much dragon puberty, but I can't help but wonder if it shows how powerful an adult Spike would be, and that his molting has been supercharged because of his birth, and it just took now to show up... Also, we need to have a race between RD and Spike....PLEASE!!!!

The obvious age difference aside, I think it’s clear they’re better as friends than any romantic interest. I do hope they do an episode with Spike realizing his crush with Rarity is not going to go anywhere and that he accepts it, while maybe a little hurt at first, he is content with being Rarity’s friend and matured in that way as well. Admittedly, I was spoiled on the surprise, but I didn't know if it would be for this episode only or a permanent change. I'm glad it was the latter. I think there's only one more episode I've been spoiled on for this season. After that, I won't have to worry about anymore leeks - and neither will any reactors. Let's move on to the next episode and see what we get.

On that note, Celestia's had centuries to tame Philomena. Normally I don't talk about the episodes that much. But it is one of the development milestones (like CMC getting Cutie Marks, Twilight becoming a princess etc.) so it is really worth discussing. Besides, I had a hype for this episode since the synopsis. REALLY HUGE HYPE. So, let's talk about the episode itself... 1. Spike and Rarity are heading to phoenix nests. I am not gonna lie, Sparity was one of the reasons I was so excited about this episode. I love this ship even it is pointed time and time again that it shouldn't work. But I still admire Spike's devotion and hope he will find his happiness with her 2.Rarity's signals towards Spike was one of the reasons I felt a bit uncofortable during this episode. I can divide this content into two parts, I will talk more about it later. Look how she looks at Spike at the beginning. It is really quite seductive and manipulative at the same time. Counter Pro Sparity:1 3.Rarity's collection of duckfaces increases drastically after this episode. 4.Somepony make a gif of Rarity walking in circles around Spike. That has to become a gif ! 5. Return of Peewee !!! I didn't think that we will see him again. He just dissappeared one day and we only knew that Spike let him go. This was a really cool comeback! 6. The fact that Rarity sugests Spike to go to Zecora is interesting. Spike and Zecora are the most used characters when it comes to helping others. Zecora is helping others by curing them and Spike is...well, he is not always eager to do those things (ekhm, abuse, ekhm, dirty work) but he is still helping a lot. I was wondering if those two will ever make an interaction based on helping each other. 7. And when Spike talks about beauty sleep, Rarity is visibly annoyed. Con Sparity:1 8. I can't blame Twilight for telling Spike to go away but it still hurts a bit. I can understand her fear about the castle..No, wait, I don't understand it, this castle is made out of crystal which makes it the least flammable spot in Ponyville, which is mostly made out of wood. But I am not mad at Twi. She tried to help, she couldn't know that she accidentaly implanted in Spike that he is experiencing Molteffect because she threw him out of the castle. 9.Also, Twilight talking about Celestia never having a blemishes made me wonder what was Celestia during her puberty and adolescence. Pity that we probably never find out. 10. I know that I may talk a bit much about Sparity angle but I just have to discuss some little hints. This episode is a heaven for the reference hunters. Both in general (Pewee returns, reference to It is not a Mane thing about you, Secret of my Excess callback.) and for Sparity fans ( at the beginning, Spike's stone scale pattern looks like Rarity's cutie mark, Spike was assisting in preparing a lecture about the element of Generosity. I will talk more about this references ). 11. Spike is wearing his suit from the olympics in the Crystal Empire. 12. Rarity approves Spike's clothing, really nice of her. 13. "But I still want you to take it off". Guys, I literally chocked on that part. I had to pause and think about it. Rarity wants Spike to take of his clothes off for her. Yes, I am well aware that later she states that she wants Spike to do some modeling for her...but the way she said it, made me feel...I don't even know how. It is not like this words wouldn't be expected from Rarity, who is the only one from the Mane 6 that belives in concept of nudity (ask AJ) but this words directed to Spike were.. well, at least suprising. 14. Pinkie Pie's as a tourist guide ? Those tourists wouldn't be the same ponies after the trip. 15. Also there is a guy that was beaten up by Flutterrage. 16.Spike's volume shifts was one of the funniest MOMENTS IN THAT EPISODE. I CAN relate to that cause to this DAY I HAVE TWO VOICES, EVEN WHEN my puberty ended. I guess it WILL BE A PROBLEM FOR Reactors. (Volume adjusting) 17. When Spike started shouting in the library, I was afraid that Twilight will appear in a Supersayin rage and kick him out to Tartarus.... FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRR BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOKKSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!! KAMEHAMEHEMHAREHAREHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! STUDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Moving on... 18. Young Six, always good to see them. Instant love! 19. It is ironic that Spike is helped by Smolder, the dragon crowned as an alternative version of Scootaloo. Speaking of Scootaloo, little squirt will be devastated, seeing that Spike is flying before her. 20. It is good to know that bigness induced by greed is optional and Molt is mandatory. Thank you for finally explaining that. 21. "Did you live with ponies your entire life ?"...seriously Smolder ? Seriously? 22. Pinkie Pie has a new "Here is Johnny" moment. 23. Zecora teaches us about the importance of patience and the ways of nature. As Glossaryck from Star vs. the forces of evil said "Nature is like a runaway dump truck : Hot, fast and full of garbage". Some things cannot be rushed. The molt has to be endured. 25. "Teaching asparagus to sing" no comments needed, Zecora has best rhymes ever. 24. Okay, loud Rarity is annoying as hell, but it is strangely cute, because of that british accent intensification. Take not, this is how Rarity will sound at the age of Granny Smith. #LOUDNOISESDARLING. 25. If phoenix feathers disable hearing, shouldn't Celestia be deaf by now ? That would explain why she is so rarely helping in threats. She doesn't hear all the screaming. But I know she has some kind protective spell. 26.ISSSUES 27. And Spike just had to reveal himself. So cliché. Conviniently, Rarity doesn't hear. 28. It is really interesting that dragons have natural predators. I have never seen them as preys. 29. Rocs are cool looking predators. Also, rocs are a common creatures in a persian mythology, which is really cool. References to greek mythology...meh. References to persian mythology...now that is impressive. 30. I am preety sure that Zecora lives in the middle of the forest. Why they are on open space now ? 31. "Remember children, never climb high trees. You can fall, got hit by the lightning or be caught by overgrown bird" 32.Spike is glowing red!!!! Is there going to be some kind of awesome battle power...No...Okay, I guess not... 33. Spike bumps into Rarity, who is conviniently walking in a wrong direction. (Into the forest) 34. INSTRHUKSHIONS 35. "Let my ponies go" was in my opinion one of the most badass quotes of Spike 36.The details of the inside of the claw are amazing. 37. Now we have Twilight, just trotting by in the Everfree Forest. Well, magical horse ain't gonna explain s**t. 38. Rarity recalls being kidnapped by Spike on his birthday. It is quite symbolic that now Spike is her saviour. 39. Those shooting sound effect were hilarious 40. Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiingsssssss!!!!!! Spike's evolving!!!!!! 41. It is quite weird seeing Spike flying but I will get usedto it. 42. Spike is a natural flyer. Heck he can even fly upside down. Remember when Twilight were learning how to fly ? 43. SPIKE!!!!!!SAVE HER!!!!!!SAVE THE MARE OF YOUR DREAMS!!!BE THE HERO!!!!YEEEEEEEEESSSSSS!!!!!!HE DID IT!!!!!!HE SAVED HER!!!!!!!SAVED FRICKING RARITY!!!!F**K YEAH, LARSON!!!!THANK YOU!!!!! 44.Twilight and Spike scene is really touching and this is the level of caring I would like to see for Spike 45. And for last one... The last minute and a Rarity and Spike scene. This scene...it ruined the mood for me. Rarity, I really, really love you, you're my mane 6 fav but... let's just see... Rarity is convincing Spike that it was silly to think that they would abandon him (Okay, okay, that's good I am waiting) "There are so many good things because you stayed" (Yes, yes, say it...) "A model who can help with dresses any height." STOP.CUT.PAUSE Remember that this is probably the first time that Rarity and Spike talk since the Roc incident. Spike is probably wondering if Rarity will mention the situation. But she only expresses her joy for him staying. He might think that this is cool, he is missed somwhere. Moments later he hears that there he would be missed because he is the best one to be used and assist with the work. OUCH!!!! Rarity, if you had the fingers, that would be a huge middle one, exactly into Spike's heart. You love Spike or not, you SHOULD thank him. He didn't helped you with something, he didn't solved something for you, HE SAVED YOUR LIFE!!! You should be very greatful for that, not take it for granted. You were more appreciative towards Rainbow in Sonic Rainboom. And Spike...he cares for you and proven it multiple times. If someone loves you, you should never ignore it or even worse, hurt him. Even if you don't love it back. To this day, we had three major Sparity episodes: Secret of My Excess, Inspiration Manifestation and Molt Down. In each and every one Rarity needs to be saved and someone has to be stopped. In the first one, Spike has to stop himself from destroying Ponyville and hurting Rarity and his love for her provides the rescue. In the second one, Spike needs to stop Rarity for her own good. And now Spike has to save Rarity from the external force, the Roc. Rarity appreciates Spike's efforts, even kisses him, in the first example, but ignores them in the remaining two, which in my opinion were just as dangreous if not more. But by now, Rarity should know that Spike's love is genuine and can't be dismissed as a silly crush. Spike gently suggests that there are some things about flying that don't involve dresses. Maybe he even thinks about flying together when he will be older. Rarity counts down the examples of the other work he can do for her. And in that moment we can see that this is not going without echo, that Spike is really disappointed, maybe even thinks about moving on. But then he smiles and we can know, that whatever he may face, he will always care for Rarity. It was such a warm smile. That's why I love this silly dragon.

Josh Haber, you magnificent bastard! =D I was actually starting to wonder if Spike was just some unique wingless breed of dragon, but it looks like all dragons in Equestria get wings when they grow up, and now Spike's got his! And, as you said, it's not a question of whether he's earned the right to them. This is biological, unlike the bequeathing of alicorn wings, though I still say Twilight _does_ deserve hers. Spike's been through a lot over the course of the show, and has had a lot of ups and downs. Really glad you went through the episodes where he's had significant focus and learned valuable lessons, even ones where it seemed like he wasn't portrayed the best, like Spike at Your Service and Princess Spike. Kudos for pointing out the good that you can see once you strip away the problematic bits. Even when we don't see him at his best, we do see him showcasing some admirable personality traits: responsibility, dedication, and commitment to his friends. He's been hit with undeserved slapstick, neglect, and self-doubt, but as the show's gone on, he's become a lot more competent, compassionate, and mature, much more how I would expect someone raised by Twilight to be, though thankfully he's still good for comic relief. He saved the Crystal Empire twice, braved the Gauntlet of Fire, helped pave the way for both Thorax and Ember to become Equestrian allies, and even joined the Dragon Migration on foot, toughing out everything in it and even defending Peewee's egg from Garble and his friends. After everything he's gone through, he _so_ deserved this! He's finally growing up, and I am so proud of him. It felt like seeing the Crusaders getting their cutie marks all over again.

Here are my highlights: 1:07 Notice how Spike is keeping his claw pressed to his face? 1:11-1:26 Applegeek is excited to hear we're visiting phoenixes. And Peewee. 1:16-1:28 I was going to comment on how long it's been since we've seen Peewee, and how he was unceremoniously dropped from the series in the second season. But Applegeek, Spike and Rarity do all the talking for me. 1:23-1:29 Rarity's face. Also, yes, are we really just going to forget the fact that Celestia has a pet phoenix too? We haven't seen Philomena since Season 1. 1:29-1:37 Rarity notices Spike is hiding something. She circles him faster and faster until she suddenly demands an explanation. 1:43-1:54 Stone scales - the dragon equivalent of pimples. 1:53 I said it first, Applegeek 1:54 You find that shot funny? One major piece of world building that you did not seem to talk about is what happens to other dragons going through a molt. All dragons that are as young as Spike are kicked out of their homes and have to escape large predators (without wings) by themselves. This means that every dragon we see with wings is a survivor. While this will definitely install self-confidence in themselves (and lead to the cockiness we saw in several dragons), it indicates a lack of empathy on the part of dragons as a whole. I mean, consider what the mortality rate would be for these young dragons be, especially if these predators are drawn to the younglings by the scent. It would be similar to Applejack or Rarity kicking Applebloom or Sweetie Belle (respectively) out to survive in the Everfree forest. What are your thoughts?

I'm glad Spike finally got his wings and we got to see Twilight's,Rarity's and Zecora's reaction and I looked at all of the other episodes of season 8 and we don't get to see pinkie pie's,applejack's,Fluttershy's,Rainbow dash's,Starlight's or anyone else's reaction to Spike getting his wings.WHY?! Whenever I am reverse engineering a mechanical device, repainting an action figure, or just building something out of small pieces of trash (metal bits, broken pens, anything that fits my liking) that I got by dumpster diving in a trash can in Middle School, I always talk to myself. Normally, it isn't positive on these days, since I am currently a college student who is constantly getting a huge workload, and recent events are pretty disturbing. Still, if I went deaf, I'd probably have a similar effect; it already happens if I have headphones on when drawing blueprints.
