@@WeaverLeatherSupply I did have a suggestion for a video or to ask for help. When I did my leather dying with the Fiebing's Purple dye, I got a weird greenish metallic color that appeared. After a lot of searching, I found out it was apparently called "Bronzing". A video on how to avoid/correct bronzing would be very helpful since there arent any great sources on how to deal with it that I could find.

Hi Melody, Using beeswax is an old school technique and will absolutely work, but, it’s a bit tough to apply evenly. Modern top coats/finishes are just easier to apply and get consistent, which beeswax isn’t but, it will certainly do edges and act as a good top coat.

I can’t honestly tell you how the two would work in combination. I haven’t tried this but I think each may resist the other. A little experimentation may be necessary. If you don’t mind the flat finish the Aussie gives you I may go with that initially and tell the customer to add when necessary. I love the Balm but it doesn’t have the same moisture resistance the Aussie does.

What would be a good top coat for leather motorcycle bags, Atom Wax or something more heavy duty? I've seen people coating canvas and cotton etc with a blend of paraffin and bees wax that's been melted and then heating the article up with a heat gun to further soak into the material and become somewhat water proof. I wonder how that would work on leather?

Brilliant video Chuck. Just wondering if applying a top coat will help me to get rid of sticky leather on my white sofa. I used a saddle soap after someone told me is an excellent cleaner for leather. Indeed cleaned nicely but destroyed top coat on one of seats that was applied. Now all dirt stick to that and none of leather balms help. Is there any chance to fix that sticky finish? Your advice is very much appreciated.
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Rafal, I am so sorry to hear that and I am not really sure what I can suggest. It’s odd that the Saddle Soap would harm any type of a top coat, and, why it would treat one cushion differently (and I’m not sure what the sticky would be from). There may be a couple of ways to go here. It sounds like the one thing keeping a new, or any, top coat from working is the “sticky” and I’m not sure what this could be. You may try an alcohol (Ethyl, Rubbing, Isopropyl) to clean off whatever is causing this and that may allow a top coat to work. The best way to go would be to Deglaze the cushion (commonly used to clean the leather before tooling and/or to remove dirt, old top coats…). This should remove old top coat and whatever is sticky and it shouldn’t remove any color. Once dry (pretty quick) add a new top coat. This is best tried as an experiment on the back side of the cushion to see if it does what it should. Once this is done then, I believe, most any top coat should work. You may try the RTC Sheridan Resist. This is good about keeping the color of the dye/leather where it is and will dry to a nice medium matte finish. See if either of these work for you.

@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Annita, It’s not a perfect plan but you can deglaze the edges and flesh side of the belt, top coat it heavily and that will help some. Here’s what I would suggest. From here on, go with the Pro Dye and once dry clean the belts with a lightly (very lightly) oiled cotton rag and do the face, edges (heavily) and the flesh (heavily). Use something like Leather Balm but go easy on the face and edges (normal) and then heavy on the flesh side. Buff the edges and back with a rag and you will knock out about 99% chance of rub-off. It’s still dyed but it will help immensely.

Hi Jay, I'm sorry you're having trouble with this! One question I have is are you wiping away the excess and then buffing with a soft cloth immediately after applying? Weaver Leathercraft Thank you for your reply...yes, I’m wiping the excess off immediately and trying to buff it...it is really tacky though, so tends to take fibers off my buffing cloth and puts them on the surface of my work. Even when I do that, my beveling is pretty deep, so it is quite difficult to get the excess out of the beveled areas. I’d need to use a small pick or something like that to get in there to remove it.

Ok, well I never heard anything back from y’all about this. I used the leather balm a couple of days ago exactly as you showed in the video and it splotched all over the panel. And now I have a new project with floral tooling on it...how can I apply this stuff on there without the wax getting imbedded in all my beveling and undercuts??? How should I do that please? I need help here...the stuff has a nice finish when it worked but I keep having tons of problems like this. Help, please???
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 5 жыл бұрын
@@jayj4142 I have had the same issue with the Leather Balm, but, the trick is to get complete coverage on the entire panel in the first pass. I wouldn’t go with a dauber. Use something like a sponge so you can cover a larger area as fast as possible then come back with a lighter coat to fill in. That should take care of the problem but I would experiment with it on some scrap just to see if you feel like that takes care of the issue. One more bit of help. I love the Leather Balm (as you said, it’s a nice look), but, the Saddle-Lac is my favorite. It’s a spray on and if a lite pass is made then it dries quickly, has a lower level of gloss and doesn’t change the color at all. There’s a trick to using it, so, if you want to go that route let me know and I’ll fill you in! See if this helps

Hi James, It depends a little bit on what color the helmet is currently. If it's a light color, you can apply deglazer to remove any top coat and then dye the leather red using something like Fiebing's Pro Dye, and re-apply a top coat. If the helmet is a dark color, dye will will not cover the dark color - if anything it will just become a darker shade. You would be better off painting it with Angelus acrylic paint.

@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Melody, There isn't a way to thicken the leather but you could always glue two pieces together to get a heavier weight. You should be able to use the leather remnants for most of the items you mentioned above. You could do a four strand braid keychain or tassle keychains. Coin purses work great with thinner leather and you you'll want a pretty thin leather for lighter holders too. If the leather is chrome tanned you won't be able to wet mold it but you can still shape it and sew it around the shape of the lighter. Hope that helps, let us know if you have any other questions!

Ricardo, thank you for the comment! I would definitely go with the Leather Balm. The Leather Sheen is bad about spitting and, just in my opinion, kind of a pain to get consistent. The wax is pretty good about wicking in and holding. Once it starts to wear a bit (probably years down the road) you can add a new coat and it will almost go right back to looking new again.

Thank you so much. I'll be giving atom wax a try. I am afraid of the water stain rubbing off specially unto my clothes. I live in California so limited in certain dyes/stains I can purchase here. Many thanks again really enjoy your tutorials!!

Question after you dyed leather do you have to put a top finish coat to keep the dye from bleeding over time? I am still kind of confused about that
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob, The answer is yes. In order to have the least chance of bleeding, you do need to use some kind of top coat finish to seal the leather. Some dyes have a tendency to cause more bleeding than others but what we’ve found that works best is Pro Dye from Fiebings. That coupled with a good finish like Tuff Kote or Leather Balm with atom wax will make for almost virtually no bleeding.

Small question... when dyeing, antiques and then applying a top coat(sealer) of some kind... when do you oil the leather ?
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Monique, If using oil in the process do it in this order. Dye, oil, antique, top coat. A couple tips when applying oil, apply very sparingly with a rag to get oil on as evenly as possible, otherwise, it can cause streaking which won’t look great and too much oil will also make so that a top coat won’t properly adhere to the project. Hope this helps!

I made a mistake with resolene and tried to wipe off my belt before drying with a damp cloth, it's not has a slightly tacky streaky finish, how can I fix that?
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Joey, You could use some deglazer to remove any leftover resolene and then re-apply the top coat. Hope that helps!

Hello. What is your recommendation for a good water resisintant/proofing sealant?

Hi Wendy! The best water resistant sealer I've found is beeswax - we did some experimenting for a live video and this seemed to work the best!

Thanks for interesting video! Have a question. Can I use a Fiebings Institutional Leather finish after leather balm?
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching! I would say don't apply the finish on top of the leather balm, since the leather balm is already applied, the finish won't go on evenly.

Hi Arthur, We would recommend Fiebing's Resolene as a top coat to seal the color in and prevent rub-off: www.weaverleathersupply.com/catalog/item-detail/50-1920/fiebings-resolene/pr_8070/cp_/shop-now/leather-care/dyes-paints-finishes/top-coat
