Tan-Kote and Resolene are both great products. To determine which one is better for a specific project, you first have to understand how they work and what they do to the leather.
The main difference between the two is how they seal the leather. They are often both used as a resist in the antiquing process, but will give you different results. A resist is used when you want to highlight the details of your tooling with antique but not darken the smooth leather. Tan-Kote does not offer the same water resistance as Resolene. (Therefore, it doesn’t resist antique the same either.)
Fiebing’s Tan-Kote is most useful on products that you need to recondition with oil often. It can also be used to thin antique. (twentythreeplus.com/collectio...)
Fiebing’s Resolene is an acrylic finish that is much more water resistant & works better to truly resist antique. It will also give the leather a stronger seal as a top coat. (twentythreeplus.com/collectio...)

Fantastic video. I was literally watching this with a quart of Resolene and Tan-Kote sitting in front of me trying to decide which was best for this project. Thanks for the great useful info!

Does a Tan-Kote topcoat protect against dye rubbing off? If I am doing a dyed work belt, I would generally use resolene to protect clients clothes. But a work belt might benefit from reconditioning...If TanKote is permeable, then perhaps it's not as good for dyed products?

My preference is to use Resolene on my belts. If they are worn to the point of needing re conditioned then they have most likely worn through the finish anyhow. Tan-kote may keep the dye off clothes just fine but I'm most confident with Resolene.

Question what’s the order of using tan-kote and resoline? Dye paint oil finish? What’s the steps?

My steps are to dye, oil, paint, resolene, antique, resolene. I'll do a video soon going in depth on this. Great question.

What if you put the resolene over tan kite for the shiny finish for added protection

Thanks for the detailed explanation of these two popular products, Joe. As a relatively new leather crafter, I am still sorting out the various top coat finishes, when to use them, and how they affect the final project. This was extremely helpful for me!
