Hello, Immigration Attorney Michael Ibrahim. One of the biggest goals of my clients is to one day become a citizen of the United States. As you may already know, lawful permanent residents may apply to naturalize if they meet certain requirements. Lately, we have noticed naturalization cases taking longer than usual. COVID surely played an impact in the delays at USCIS. Current case processing times depend on your local Field Office. For example, USCIS’s official estimated case processing time on N-400s at the Chicago Field Office is a year to a year and a half.
In many cases, the delay is administrative and no cause for concern. In some situations, the delay could be due to additional background checks within USCIS, the greater DHS, or even the FBI. In some instances, USCIS may be asking other agencies about an applicant in its review of a case. Regardless of what the reason is for the delay, N-400 applicants have the right to have a decision made in their case 120 days after their interview. We sometimes file lawsuits in federal court that ask the court to tell USCIS to make a decision. Often times, even giving them the idea of filing a lawsuit is enough to have USCIS issue a decision. Remember, you can force USCIS to decide, but you cannot force them to approve. This is why it is important to weigh the pros and cons of filing a federal court case in a delayed naturalization case.

@@painipaini8747 I just got my naturalization 3 months ago, I waited 3 and half years after interview. By the way I wrote physical letter to immigration office and it worked for me. I didn't have any issues, but still I don't know why my case process took so much time.
