@MrJagorin2 жыл бұрын
The most egregious abuse of the term entry level I've seen is in the security world. Most people treat security, sometimes rightly so, as minimal skill and effort jobs. This is to include agencies and clients equally. Sure, security isn't difficult or particularly engaging in 99/100 interactions, but it's that 1/100 that you've hired them to deal with. In today's uncertain times where violent crime is more and more prevalent, you're asking someone to protect your clients and property with their life. With some companies, that means just above minimum wage. In return for that dangerous job at just above minimum wage, the same companies expect 5 years of similar experience with at least 2 years of military or law enforcement experience.
@natthebratster2 жыл бұрын
@@MrJagorin I don't know how long you've been in the industry but once upon a time you didn't even need previous security, law enforcement or military experience to get a position. So clearly supply and demand doesn’t apply here, because if there’s really a labor shortage, then wages offered should be skyrocketing.
@xerxeskingofking2 жыл бұрын
like many markets, the labour market doesnt strictly follow supply and demand due to a number of distorting factors that apply to the real world as opposed to the purely theoretical model. these can include things like societal/cultural beliefs (such as that a burger flipper should be paid min wage and no more), corporate pressures (to as much as possible with the minimum amount of resources), the understanding that once wages go up its almost impossible to bring them back down once the labour shortages ease, and a belief that the shortage WILL ease and that it might be possible to ride it out without concessions. Also, its quite likely the case that the people who control the purse strings, dictate the wage bands, etc, are not the ones directly feeling the labour shortages, so are quite happy to let someone else bear the pain of the lack of man hours while they "stand on principle" over the wage issue. Thier is also a element that a lot of these open positions are "luxury", or at least non critical positions. its critical that a restaurant have a chef to cook, and they cannot function without at least one....But, while they might run better with two or three, they CAN run with just one, and can afford to be picky/wait for the unicorn of the other chef positions. it sucks for the poor chef doing the work of three, but the bosses dont see that, just that they've saved on payroll. it might not be long term substainable, but given the high turnover of many positions, that time bomb might not come to light until after the bosses responsible have moved on. also, ive seen plenty of anecdotal evidence that wages ARE increasing in some fields. ive seen photos of places offering significantly above min wage for burger flipping, even offering bonuses for turning up. its not universal, but it is happening as the pressure form lack of workers starts to overcome the inertia i mentioned above
@thiloreichelt41992 жыл бұрын

@TheAwesomes2104 Жыл бұрын
The sad thing about that is that the vast majority of jobs now only look at your actual resume after you've been selected for the interview process. With most online job applications (which are most job application now,) you might get the option to upload and attach your resume, but because a robot is doing the initial screening, you must re-enter the resume into their application program. It doesn't carry over fonts or colours, and often causes formatting issues that make you have to re-type/restructure large portions, if not the entirety, of your resume. This might be a good tactic for getting an upperhand once your on to the interview portion, but for most jobs it will not help you at all to get to that first step. And considering so many people apply to dozens or even hundreds of positions they should qualify for without getting more than a couple of interviews, if any at all, doing so for every position would be extremely time-extensive for what may be no payoff at all. Not saying your suggestion isn't a good one, it defiently might help you stand out enough to get a job over other candidates interviewed, it's just a sad reality that you must first design your resume for an AI robot before you have any chance of a human being that can care about such things even laying eyes on it.

I have a hard time believing that recruiters or employers are reading my resume. The link to my portfolio is one of the first things listed under my name. When I get through the recruiters and I have made it to the actual employer interview, typically, the first thing I am asked is if I have anything online. This leads me to believe they have never looked at anything on my resume. I would say that this kind of behavior creates its own labor shortage.

If a 27% response rate is considered a good reply rate that is absolutely laughable.... I have been applying for entry level positions in customer service and have had my resume updated by a professional and I can tell you that the 27% reply rate sounds about right. What that tells me is employers do not respect potential employees time and shows me that either the market is flooded with applicants or employers are either lazy or not serious. I agree that having to fill out assessments as part of the application process is extremely tiresome and seemingly a common practice. If employers are going to cry "Labor shortage" then maybe they should either up their game in regards to response rates or start offering wages more inline with valuing the prospective employees time and/or skills/experience.

When we were hiring an assistant developer at our small company we got about 24 applications. We interviewed 3. We weren't even looking for someone terribly skilled - just needed to know c# and Unity engine. Some applicants had this huge laundry list of computer engineering credentials but didn't have 'unity', and I'd didn't want to have to teach that. So that narrowed the field a lot right off the bat.

Coming from a profession where in my country there's a real shortage of labor: any job I've applied for I had a response for within days, my current one was one day. Same for my colleagues - we can literally pick and choose and make demands because they desperately need anyone to fill these positions. My friend just got her diploma and she was able to demand a higher salary at her first job interview and got it. A 27% callback is laughable. I've applied to well over 70 jobs, here in Mexico, in the US, Canada and even Spain. What I can tell you is this: 1: Most jobs are severely underpaid; I've looked into internships as well, and the broad majority are unpaid. Leave alone the minimum-wage, un-livable wages, even jobs that require skills and experience are underpaid. 2: They ask for ludicrous qualifications for entry-level jobs: 5+ years of experience in the industry plus a college degree in the broad majority of cases (in videogame development, for example, they ask you have *at least* 3 AAA titles under your belt). 3: They are not willing to hire people from other countries and even other states, even if you have the possibility and are willing to move elsewhere to work, they'll reject you based on where you live. 4: HR departments *enjoy* to mess with you and to make your life more complicated: I've had an interview cancelled at the last minute, and in another one they outright left me hanging, they didn't even apologize for that. 5: They pretend to give you bonuses; Free snacks and drinks! (terrible) Medical Insurance! Two full weeks of vacation a year! Oh and by the way... we don't pay overtime, which you MUST do. 6: There are too many jobs that they're not even trying to fill; They can very well reject you, give you an explanaition such as "we found someone more qualified", and a couple of weeks later the same job offering is back open in LinkedIn. Whatever it is: either gathering resumes or whatever, the jobs aren't being posoted to get filled. There's no labor shortage, the shortages are on the companies' side.

As a Graphic Designer myself, I have to say that you are spot on about the resumes! Originally, many years ago, I wanted a resume that was more of a "portfolio piece" -- something that showcased my style and creativity. And it looked great!! But no one ever saw it. Even back then, most places used automated scanning systems to parse a resume and filter down the hundreds (or thousands) of candidates to a more manageable number... and all that artistic flair gets in the way of that automated scanning. So that gorgeous resume of mine just got punted before any human eyes ever saw it. When I realized this, after months of not hearing back from anyone, I switched to a much more conventional and much less artsy resume design -- and I had a new job within a couple of weeks.
@NNic.2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for commenting this. I haven't been sure if submitting a "plain" resume was the right choice for graphic design positions because it seems counterintuitive, but I didn't want an ATS scanner to auto-reject my artistic resume. I've been stressed out about this. 😓
@Bagu_Art2 жыл бұрын
Wow, really? Huh...at school they had us make an artsy resume (I'm an animation major). Mine doesn't even have much to it, the only real artsy stuff is contained in the header, and to one side of it, the rest of the resume is plain white with colored text (Blue for main points and gray for the extra info). I wonder if I should try just making a more conventional resume and see how it goes... I've had lots of trouble even getting any sort of response from employers. I've never heard of the resume scanning before, but it makes sense when they get tons of applicants for a position I'd imagine. I'm wondering if having the art in the header is an issue....
@olencone40052 жыл бұрын
@@Bagu_Art So, I may have some bad news for you... as this may or may not still happen at companies. Back in the early 2000's, the company I was working at tasked me and two other experienced Designers to sort through a deluge of applications for a Design position the owner was hiring for. We received around 800 applications, which the owner wanted us to sort into "Yes," "No," and "Maybe" stacks. At that time, there were three schools in the area cranking out students with Graphic Design degrees -- prolly a hundred or so every six months. And we could tell at a glance which ones were recent grads from which schools -- the resumes and portfolios the school had them build were essentially identical. For example, one school's portfolios had a motorcycle rendering followed by an architectural landscape followed by a movie poster. They were prolly from class projects that everyone did. The school resumes were all very artistic too -- mainly to cover for the lack of experience (they were recent grads, after all). One school seemed to have everyone fill space with a wide sidebar of art or screens, another had them include portfolio images (like book illustrations for the resume text), another just used very intricate typestyles in larger-than-normal sizes to fill the space. Everyone used different custom paper stocks as well. At first, we were tagging these as "Maybe" -- the owner wanted experienced Designers, but she was also very cheap. So the idea was that if the experienced "Yes" candidates weren't interested she could prolly get a skilled recent grad for cheap. (Sorry recent grads, that's just how it was... and prolly still is 😒) She looked through them, saw how they were all the same, and told us to start again with the sorting but reject any that were like that -- I guess she wasn't impressed with the class projects or something. So, no school resumes/portfolios at all. It whittled our pile down from 800 applicants to around 150, maybe 200 (and I think around 30 or so of those wound up in the "Yes" pile for the owner to review). So, if you're using a template that your design school pushed, you might want to consider changing it to something more "business normal" -- or at least just something different in general. If nothing else, it will help you to stand out from your classmates, who pretty much all blend together when they apply to the same position. And it will also work better for the scanning software that recruiters and companies use today. At my last posting, I saw the resume that my recruiter had submitted to the company I was contracting to -- they had run my resume through some sort of parsing program and distilled it down to a half-page "cliff notes" of my actual resume, just barebones info all in what looked like 14-point Helvetica with a block of keywords at the bottom on whatever cheap white copy paper was in their printer. I assume this is normal for what the scanning software does. Any art or creative elements you may use, no one will see it unless you hand a living person your resume. And getting to that living person in this day and age usually means getting past the AI parsing programs first, which have zero interest in nice design, style, color, fancy paper stock, art, or fonts. It just scans for keywords, pulls the appropriate info, and weighs what it finds against some sort of algorithm that decides if you're a "yes" or a "no" for a human to see. :(

Welding as a trade is not well defined. Lots of low level production uses welding but since it is basically just a way to attach parts together what really affects pay is if that welding has to be done to a standard. There are engineering codes for welding just like everything else and if the welder has to maintain a standard. The standard that has to be maintained and the level of skill required to maintain that standard is what affects pay. Welding can start around minimum wage for someone who just pulls a trigger on a machine and is very able to hit 6 figures if the person has the skill. Welding also tends to be project based with large amounts of overtime and at times long layoffs especially if the person is unwilling to travel.

They sent an offer letter the next week and agreed to my demand which was $12,000 for relocation. But there were so many job interviews like Leonardo DRS out there it ridiculous because there are many qualified applicants considering how many make it to the final stage, companies holding out for the golden goose is a huge issue. Also that golden goose is also interviewing with other jobs and first one to throw him an offer will get him which is the one giving 1 to 2 interviews max, they forget time is very important to an employee.

What's crazy is how many desperate employers are only hiring people on contract instead of direct. It's an employee's market. If we take the risk to take a job (possibly leaving a current one,) the company needs to also take a risk by hiring us direct!
@NNic.2 жыл бұрын
Sadly, there are lots of low quality workers mixed in with the few "diamonds in the rough", so it's easy to accidentally hire bad apples. I've found that when I do great work, the job often morphs into a direct-hire position. Edited for clarity.

@@NNic. That's true, but there are lots of horrible companies to work for. They often misrepresent the job and the culture can be toxic. I've applied to hundreds and hundreds of jobs over the past 2 years. I have a lot of great experience, primarily in food manufacturing compliance (I'm in CA btw). We see hiring signs all over, but they refer you to text numbers or websites. My son, a recent h.s. graduate, and my now ex, an entry level worker, were also looking. The verdict? I got one offer, which was based on a referral from a friend (dispatch). For basic office (admin asst), almost NOTHING, from multiple agencies for over a year I've been hearing about this. And recently, I got a call from the dollar store who is holding open interviews. I've gotten contacted by a few head hunters for fs/qa mgr roles out of state for what I actually do. And sadly. That's it. My son had an interview with olive garden & got hired at McD. Ex gets jobs left and right for manual labor, gets permanent job offers. So that industry seems ok, but it's back breaking work. The signs in stores seem BS. I've suspected for a long time that the "abundance of jobs" has been a lie, and I'd say based on my family's and friends experiences in CA, that is true. And job search engines have a lot of fake jobs. Beware.

Yeah, I initially went into "get a job, any job" mode when I was unemployed. The rejection from a job that I thought I'd interviewed well with was the kicker I needed to take it a bit slower. I really didn't even like that job and as a call center worker, starting a new job can easily lock us out of finding a new one for awhile. Many companies demand 100% attendance for several weeks of training, and then 100% attendance for another month or two after training. If you spot a job you like, you now have to either lose the current job and take a gamble in interviewing for the new job (and if you don't get it, your employment with the other company is often reported to unemployment so you won't qualify for receiving benefits again), or just let the opportunity pass you by. Once I stopped and remembered that, I decided to still apply frequently, but to be way more selective. Still took me two months and at least a hundred applications to find a job.

I've run into this, and agree with you. Years ago, I was employed but looking to move, and had two interviews with a company, and they went well. That is, until the offer. It was slightly below my desired salary range, but since it was still more than I was making and I liked everything about the place so far, I verbally accepted, and asked for the written offer. The hiring manager said he was "busy", but would send it to me. A week and two more calls go by and I still don't have the written offer. I call again, and I tell the hiring manager I NEED the written offer, and that I will not turn in my two weeks notice with my current company until I get it, and that this one week wait is just delaying everything. He seems surprised ("Oh, really?"), but a few days later I finally get a boilerplate, three sentence offer letter, which does not mention benefits at all, just salary, nothing else. It took him more than a week to send a three sentence offer. The whole thing concerned me and pissed me off so much, that I questioned this place (did they delay the written offer because were they looking to do a salary bait and switch?), and whether I would be a good fit there after all. So a few days later I called back and rejected the offer. They were shocked, and told me they had already turned down other applicants. I apologized but stated my decision was final. About 6 months later I started interviewing again and landed a job at a place just down the street. The company that I rejected was PISSED about that - how DARE he reject us and go somewhere else! To summarize: some companies think of people as slaves that they can disrespect and insult, and you somehow are still supposed to be "thankful" for the lowball pay, terrible working conditions, and deceptions.

From my experience a lot of employers are desperate to fill positions that pay so low that nobody in their right mind would accept with today's cost of living. Indeed I was working a temp position at a company that was getting applicants for permanant positions, but only from people with felonies or failed the drug test. Obviously. Such people lack options, so they will accept. I negotiated to lengthen my assignment with them as they were short on employees and it was convenient for me, but I refused to apply permanantly as they would have cut my pay significantly. (They can't "afford" to pay their permanant workers that much for the same job.) Even I was not getting paid particularly well, but I accepted the wage they gave me because it filled a work gap for me and my commitment was short term. Otherwise I would have loved to stay with them. But not for free. Never for free. I think the market for skilled jobs that will pay a mortgage and basic life expenses would be a lot more competitive.
@heydude230012 жыл бұрын
I used to work in HR, did a lot of recruiting. I agree, there are a 'lot of jobs available' but many of those jobs are too low pay, poor working conditions (retail night shift, low end restaurants, commission sales, etc) or aren't even really jobs (e g. MLM scams, etc.). Truly the good paying jobs ($70,000+ a year) with quality Employers are still harder to find and more competitive. There are a lot of low quality recruiters trying to fill jobs for low quality Employers, who don't want to pay correct salaries, require more education and experience than the job actually needs, require time consuming assessments at application stage. Big red flag if the Employer won't tell you the ballpark pay range up front. I won't go to an interview unless I know the job pays what I need it to. Imagine wasting one or several days interviewing somewhere only to get a pay offer $20,000 less than your desired pay. Especially if you told them your desired/required pay up front, which you should. That happened to a coworker. The other company knew his salary and offered him about half what he was currently making. Ridiculous.

IMO, resumes are antiquated and should be done away with. Today, online application forms collect all the information and put it into a format that can be easily sorted and searched. Skill in writing a resume is completely unrelated to ability in the actual job skills, and a recruiter who is influenced by the appearance of a resume rather than the contents therein is doing their employer a disservice. Far better would be Gett ng rid of this artifact of previous generations for something that more accurately relays qualifications without the pointless distractions of formatting and decoration.

Having worked for a resume processing software company in the past (RezLogic), I can tell you businesses that rely solely on automated resume processing end up shooting themselves in the foot when it comes to finding candidates. Typically the HR/recruiter types that are setting up the searches, aren't including all the necessary keywords, correct keywords, or even correctly spelled keywords when it comes to setting up their applicant searches. It's the laziness and penny pinching during the recruiting process that has hobbled more applicant searches than, "bad resumes". An intelligent knowledgeable human looking at two different resumes (one 'ATS compliant', the other designed by 'graphic designer') will be able to determine which of the two candidates best meets their needs, where as most automated resume processing algorithms are only good as they're initially programmed to be, only as good as their parser, only as good as good as the OCR, etc. When it comes to 'forms' comprehension, humans are just better, still than any attempts at having AI do it.

Even though I get great scores, I've had callbacks on none of them.

Like this guy in the video suggested, when I find a job that interests me on Indeed, I take the time to hunt down that company's actual website and apply there. Far greater success rate that way. @LadyNerdyLegalPants2 жыл бұрын
• Applying to jobs and having to go onto another website is my pet peeve! I won't do it! Unless it's a 5-star animation studio like Disney or something, I'm not gonna do it! • I also don't buy templates because they usually are designed by people who have no clue how to technically make resumes. I've seen resumes that have photographs of candidates. If you're a model, I'll want to see your photo. However, if you're not a model and applying with an actual 8x10 headshot, don't you dare include a photo of yourself because it's huge grounds for discrimination!! • Before I married and changed my name, my last name made me sound like I was from a Spanish-speaking country. I got it all my life, even as a child. Anyway, the moment I married all I did was change my name on my resume. Nothing else. I had zero answers to applications before the change and a drastic up-tick in calls for interviews and job offers after... Yes, people will discriminate against your name. It sucks! So don't name your kid Rainbow Sunshine unless you plan on paying for therapy or expect them to change their names later. • DO NOT put your full address on your resume. You can put the city, but don't put the street address. Why? Because if you're renting in a cheaper neighborhood those employers can google map your home and judge you for it. Yeah, it's a real thing. I've had employers ask me to do it when they interviewed candidates because they wondered if they were poor and would steal. Discrimination!!! But, it's not a protected discrimination reason, so they can legally get away with it. •If employers want me to do personality tests or assessments, I reject them. I've had a huge advertising firm have me do a personality test and the results I definitely wouldn't say were me. They didn't even interview me when I was invited in, the 3 people interviewing me judged my personality test and applied personality traits based on stereotypes. I was not only offended but I couldn't even tell them anything because they literally spoke to themselves and not me. • I've been looking for work for a year now and all I can find are employers who want 1099 independent contractors instead of actually hiring me on as a full-time employee. A lot of employers are not hiring people outright anymore. The employers who do this have no idea what the difference between 1099 vs W2 is and how they can't really treat you like an employee. These companies act like you're their employee and when you remind them that you're an independent contractor they'll fire you. The IRS will check if they really should have made you an employee vs an independent contractor. The reason why many employers are doing this nowadays is that it costs them less to pay a 1099 independent contractor than it does to pay an actual employee. An independent contractor will file their own taxes at the end of the tax year because you are your own business. You are left with all the paperwork and must bill your "client" (employer). They also expect you to have no idea how to do this and not charge them tax when you bill them. Why? Because they're assuming you have no idea what it means to run your own business. Only someone desperate for work would put up with their wild monkey circus. You're also supposed to have a contract with a scope of work outlined. If they don't provide you with that, don't work for them until they do! In February I had a "client"/Employer with a big advertising firm pay me via credit card then a week later dispute the payment with their bank saying they didn't know what the charge was for. The money was removed from my bank account. It caused a huge financial strain for me! When I informed them that they had the bill and paid it last week they said "oops" and then paid me again. However, they terminated our working agreement afterwords. • I'm so over the drama of employers acting like @$$ holes during this current employment market. There are so many employers who won't hire you if you're not of the same beliefs as them, even if it's not related to the job. No, I'm not talking about if you're religious or not, I'm talking about political affiliations! I wish there was a discrimination definition where they can't discriminate against you if you wear a mask to the interview or if you don't love Donald Trump and his cult of followers... Believe it or not, I've watched former employers turn down perfectly qualified candidates because they wore a mask to the interview and instantly judge them as "leftists" or "snowflakes"... It's a sick and disturbing job market right now. I've personally been to interviews where there were mask mandates in the area and the employers have asked me to take off my mask because they don't believe in them.

@xerxeskingofking2 жыл бұрын
as he says in the video, these CV is skimmed by a program for relevant data first, to auto-populate infomation about you form the CV into the employers system. if your CV is laid out poorly or in an unorthodox manner, a lot of infomation will be missed or incorrectly skimmed, leading to what you see in the video of having to manually enter all the data you just gave them on the CV. all this happens before the HR guy even gets notifed you applied, so its basically the 1st step. so non-standard CVs are, in effect, "unreadable" in the initial screening stage and thus using one will lower your chances because the HR guy wont get your application in a useable format.

Ok, I’m just a few mins in, but you’re criticizing his resume for not being custom and being too generic. You’ve also talked about employers and recruiters not spending much time on going over each resume. That doesn’t make sense, if there’s a REAL SHORTAGE. That’s the point of his video. If there’s a labor shortage and I’m struggling to fill positions, I’m going to spend more time with the fewer resumes and applications I’m receiving and extend more interviews. I’m not going to be picky about formatting.
@michaelmurphy21122 жыл бұрын
I'm sure you figured this out, but the format issues was more due to how application systems read the and upload the resume. The weird format this guy used meant he had to basically reinput every field after uploading his resume, which, I think we can all agree, is a pain in the neck and takes a lot of time.

Regarding the time between applying and getting a response, some companies don't start responding until after the posting closes (admittedly a terrible plan) which means if you apply on the first day the job is posted, you might not hear back for several weeks to a month or so, and don't get me started on government jobs. During my last job search it took one company 4 months to get back to me, and by that point I had already accepted and started another job.

I’ve found a basic, functional resume works just fine. It’s fine to have a more “pretty” resume to carry physical copies of to give to those who interview you. I’ve found that some employer systems seriously distort the formatting even on basic MS Word and PDF resumes. I’ve been asked for a copy during interviews because my uploaded resume was so distorted it was hard to read (and it wasn’t held against me because apparently it happens to everyone, so it’s a software glitch on their end).

@@ALifeAfterLayoff Allow me to share my experience, because I firmly believe, fault is on "your" HR side of things. I've been looking for a job for two years in Czechia, we had at the time around 3% unemployment rate. When I finally found a job, I had over 1600 CVs sent out. My average number of interviews over those two years was about 0,8 to 1 per week. I stopped altering my CV and... there was no change in the frequency of interviews. Then covid hit. We had the toughest lockdown in Europe and... again, no change. So, I kept going on, hoping, I would get lucky somewhere. Our government announced, that in a week the lockdown would be terminated and in the next ten days after the announcement, I averaged 1,7 interviews per day, with 3 in one day being the most (with a healthy amount of travel time to boot that day). It was only in these ten days that I scored a job. So answer me this. How did I have so few interviews in two years of unprecedented economic growth, hunger for labor and literal employer whining, that they can't fill the positions throughout the economy, and then scored nearly twenty in span of ten days (including the one that earned me a job) in the middle of a freaking (and still ongoing) pandemic, which we'd expect to be the firing season, all the while making 0 changes to my CV? The way I see it, HR either doesn't understand basic principles of the market, eg. you can only buy, what is in there, or is failing to explain this to management. I say this, because throughout those two years, I didn't see any changes in employer's demands. I didn't see any change then and I don't see it now. All the time, entry positions, requiring two or more years of relevant working experience on top of at least a bachelor's degree and at least two (sometimes more) languages throughout the economy.
