Last year I applied to two Dutch universities but didn't end up going. In this video, I talk about what went wrong and things that you should be aware of if you're thinking of applying to university in the Netherlands.

Leiden in Dutch means: to lead. So that’s a better meaning, especially for a university. The suffering you mean is called lijden in Dutch. Pronunciation of both leiden and lijden is the same in Dutch.

omg the same thing happened to me!! i got accepted to groningen this time last year and i was soo excited to go. some people have told me it was way to late to find accommodation, but having registered to ssh, kamernet etc and frantically lurking fb groups everyday for like 3 months i thought i'd have a chance. honestly the most stressful part was being super close to getting a room 2 times and then having my hopes crushed:))

@@veganismisnonsenseme4512 i actually ended up going to a uni in my country, which was probably for the best since corona happened. but don't worry, you have plenty of time to search from now on! it's quite a tedious process, since a lot of people will reject or leave you on read, so when you get an opportunity you have to act quick. good luck! x

Some advice how to resolve this: often students sign up for student associations. This is good to get your foot in the door, often they even have houses where their members live. Otherwise you can can sleep on their couch in the meantime. And there are many student housing hotels, and easy stays, short stays that accommodate foreign students that have yet to find a room. Also, def look outside the city. Traveling for 1 hour to the uni is common here especially for first years. Once you get to know other people it is easier to find rooms too. Finding a room before the year starts is incredibly hard. It gets easier mid semester when people switch uni’s, move, or quit uni. Overall I get it was a disappointing situation, and I think the uni should have stepped up here and recommended above options. They lost you as a student now, which is not good for their numbers but also bad PR. It is a shame this situation led to you two not to be able to study here. We definitely have a student housing issue, part of it is that there are too many houses trashed being a student house, in the city center. So they kinda want less student in theory center, more on the outside ring/nearby villages. That’s why you got a hard time finding a room in the city itself. Also living in with a dutch family was an option too! Cheap as well:) we’ve got great public transport, so we are okay with traveling an hour to uni to start the uni life with. Some even keep doing that through their masters!

It's even hard for non-students in the Netherlands to find their own place, there is such a big waiting list! I moved here in the summer permanently and am going to Uni in september but luckily I got a place well in advance. Very informative video!

Very interesting video, thanks. To put things in perspective: I live in The Hague, but when my girlfriend used to live in Leiden, she was always in the Hague city center quite a bit faster. That's because traveling from one part of The Hague to the center can take much more time than the 11 minute train ride from Leiden.

Interesting! I'm a Dutch student, studying at the university of Rotterdam, but I live with my mom in a village 2,5 hours away. I can imagine how incredibly difficult it must be to find a room in the NL's as an international, because I'm Dutch and even I had to search for a room all the way from June to November (in 2019). And then it turned out to be a room with horrible flatmates so I left that place :'') there's such a ridiculous housing shortage here..

Heyy as a sort of international student living in the Netherlands I really get the struggle! The only way to get around is to study in smaller cities. I study in Maasticht where finding a great room is hard but still doable if you look early and are willing to bike 15-20 min to the center. So it reaaally depends on the city The Hague and Amsterdam are seen as impossible even for dutch students. Just for anyone applying to Dutch unis, don't get discouraged too much just really look at your city of choice! Otherwise really helpful and great video!

When I heard you skipped the house in Leiden I groaned. Its a ten minute train ride! You might get a longer commute living in The Hague! And you could have moved once you found something better! My first year in Amsterdam I had to move two times before I got a permanent room!

reminds me of how when I studied at Radboud, my international student dingy (still a great time) accommodation was across the way from a dutch only mansion that accommodated dutch students. - also I think it's important to note not all university accomodation agencies give unfurnished rooms (Radboud had SSH&N which had options from like 5 buildings all furnished with bed and wardrobe and hangers) but I do agree the accomodation process is scary.

Such a shame it’s not happening for you this year to study in the Netherlands! Are Leiden or Amsterdam really the only places you’d want to study? I happen to know that the university I’ll be going to offers the same studies (International relations and organisations). This university is located in an amazing characteristic building in a lovely city (Groningen) with lots of students! Maybe because this city is a bit further away from Amsterdam, it’s also easier to find an accommodation? Anddd.. The province Groningen also has its one airport so the UK is definitely not far away! Just a little tip :) Of course I would totally understand it if you’d prefer a city like Leiden or Amsterdam! It’s completely up to you to choose a Dutch city you feel like going to move! 💛 little notion: I see that this studies is a numerus fixus in Groningen also, but if next year you still want to study abroad, maybe you could see this university as an option :) by the way I really need to shorten my comments haha

Hey Marlies, I know I was genuinely gutted when it didn't work out. Leiden and Amsterdam are the easiest in terms of transport links with where I live in the UK. I'm now off to study at a UK university in September but if I decide to do a masters in a few years the Netherlands is definitely on the cards for me! I've heard so many good things about Groningen so I should definitely visit if nothing else! And noooo, don't worry about your long comments it's so lovely to have all these recommendations!! xx

my twin did BA and MA international studies at Leiden University. Its a good uni but their IELTS requirement is high compared to other unis. I got rejected a couple of times but eventually got accepted in a UK University to study criminology.

I applied to an art school in the Netherlands. To apply, I had to submit a research proposal, motivation letter, CV, and a well designed portfolio. When shortlisted, I had to do 2 interviews as well as write a 500w essay all within 3 hours.

Also agree about the headache of trying to find accommodation in The Hague, especially from the UK! I made it like a full time job for 2 months and finally lucked out by being offered a room by current household where they received hundreds of messages from other people. Sorry it didn't work out for you - I can see myself in the same situation so easily.

@@ImogenWhite That’s what happens when there are hundreds of applicants competing for only 12 places in the course! Plus, the habit of elitism in the art world doesn’t help. Yes good for people to know how difficult finding accommodation is over there! Especially post-brexit: I had to apply for a student visa, which meant I had to turn down an offer for a room for 5 months (sub let) since the visa requires a permanent address where I can register. I later found out that British nationals can stay somewhere for up to 90 days without registering, since that’s the limit of a non permanent visit, post-brexit. But this isn’t stated anywhere by the Uni or gov website - I had to ask about this specifically!

To be fair , traveling distances are not far . 3 hours you can travel from he most norther tip to the most southern tip of the country. if studying in amsterdam its cheaper to rent something in haarlem . Never rent something that is cheap or afordable for 1 student in a big city as they are for a reasen affordable. and not in a good way.

I used to go with the train for an hour to get to university. 20 minutes is nothing, you should have taken that room, at least you had a start to then look further for a closer room.

Logistically moving all of my stuff to a closer room would have been a nightmare as I can't drive and my parents are based in the UK. If this situation was here (UK) then I probably would have done as I would have had the support to do that but it just didn't feel quite right. I'm really glad I applied and things didn't quite work out because otherwise I wouldn't have ended up having my gap year and studying at LSE which I really enjoy!

Could it maybe be that in your heart you didn't really wanted to move countries to go to uni? I would totally understand btw, but I'm glad you are enjoying what you do now though :) It could be a unconcious feeling of fate that your path was never intended to be that one, and that's why you are so in your element at LSE! :D

Its so hard to find a room, at room.nl I even apply to accomedation in Leiden and Delft cause I simply can't find any in the Hague which is affordable. I think if I were applying now and did not get university accommodation, I would get an airbnb for a few weeks and then look for shared accommodation whilst living in the city. I was 18 when I applied, so I see things very differently as a 21 year old.

In situations like these the only thing you can do is give it a go and see what happens. I’m a big believer in the idea that things are meant to be- if you don’t get in then that’s fine, something else will come along but there’s no harm in giving it a go!

Hi Victoria, I think it is but in the year I applied they didn't have sufficient housing through the uni for the demand so I don''t think it's fully guaranteed even if you do go down that route. I have something to ask, firstly, I left school more than 10 years ago with no GCSE a resat my gcse this year to improve results to the equivalent to 5 c and higher, can I use my certificates when I apply for a uni course? Secondly Will I have to fly out to the Netherland to apply or can I apply from the UK. Thirdly, how and when should I register as living in the Netherlands as I hear it takes up to 12months for Deutch immigrant service to sort out everything and to give a decision whether you can live there, is this correct? If I'm accepted into a university in February and the course starts in September 7months later how do I stay in the Netherlands before not having an Ibn? I'd appreciate any help and advice. Hi Jay, you can apply from the UK without setting foot in the Netherlands. You should qualify for a student visa and it will take a few weeks to sort. From www.prospects.ac.uk/postgraduate-study/study-abroad/study-in-the-netherlands For EU/European Economic Area (EEA) citizens, you're free to study in the Netherlands without a visa. Your university will register your attendance with the Dutch immigration authorities. From all other countries, such as those from the UK, you'll need an entry visa (MVV) and residence permit (VVR) for the duration of your stay. To obtain these, you'll apply through your chosen university and collect the necessary documents from the Dutch embassy or consulate in your home country. In the UK, this would be the Netherlands Embassy in London. If you're staying in the Netherlands for longer than four months, you'll need to register with the Dutch council Personal Records Database at your local town hall.

I am almost 17, junior in high school with sort of good grades. If next year, which is my last year of high school will be good and I’ll get good grades, I’ll leave high school with probably 17-19as a grade in general for the whole 3 years. I also got an A in my IGSCE english exam and I’m planning on taking the ielts. I speak fluent english, greek (which is my mother language) and russian which is my second language. I’m also going to start Dutch lessons to at least know the basics (my grandma is Dutch and lives in the Netherlands so maybe she could help me) and she also lives next to a good english university that I want to try to attend. Is there a chance that I could apply for that uni? Will I have to take any exams? Could I try to apply for that uni even with not the perfect high school grades? Because my teacher told me that if I want to leave Cyprus (where I live) and go to another country to study apart from Cyprus and Greece, they will only look on my senior year grades that are “the most important”. Is that true? Thanks for your anwser ❤️ I’ll also try to work next year so I could at least have some experience and I soo hope to get accepted from that university. Plus my grandma lives there so it will be easier for me to learn the language and stuff 🙏

Hi! You will need to apply for uni in the spring time before the September that you want to go there as applications only open just under a year in advance of your start date. I imagine IELTS will be fine for proving your English language proficiency but you will still need your equivalent A Level grades. I don't know specifically about grade requirements for the course you want to do or the university you want to attend but that will determine whether you need top grades in your final exams. For me when I applied, I needed CCC in my exams which certainly wasn't the top grade at all! Hopefully that helps a little bit and gives you a bit more info on applying!!

As I was applying for a Numerus Fixus course, there was a selection procedure and ranking. I applied in January and had to wait until 1st April to hear whether I had been successful.

Hey! My name is saswot and i recently got my conditional offer from Leiden University to study International studies in the Hague. I am from Nepal and currently doing my a levels. It's literally so crazy and difficult for me to manage all sorts of things from housing to my visa with in a short period of time. Yeah, that's what I'm doing. I'm in the last year of my bachelor at Utrecht University and before covid I travelled 3 hours a day to get to university by train. Finding a room isn't easy for Dutch students as well, I'd love a room 20 minutes away from uni haha

Hi Megie, Certainly for the universities I was looking at (city unis) there wasn't campus accommodation as the campus was just one or two large buildings located in the city. Therefore that wasn't really an option for me, but I'm not 100% on whether this is also the case for other universities.

A lot of Dutch universities don't really have a campus. TU Delft has one, and Amsterdam and Utrecht both have science parks which are the newer parts of the university that do have a campus, but housing is very limited. Most Dutch students live in the city they study in, or in a nearby city. I personally need to travel 1,5 hours by train to get to Utrecht, where my faculty is in the historic city center.

Yes, but in 6th form I was keen to study abroad, London was not on my radar. It was my gap year that made me reevaluate where I wanted to study and what I wanted to study. I went from Political Science in the Hague to Geography in London. Gap years make a huge difference!!

Universities are all basically of equal level here, and they are of like... scientific difficulty. You could try applying to a 'hogeschool', which is a university of applied science, I guess it's more like a community college.

Hey Lulu I completely understand this but as I say in the video it was more the fact I’d be living in a different city to most of the students studying at my part of the university and when moving to a new country, you don’t want to be living away from your friends!

I ended up going to the London School of Economics the following year. So everything worked out well. I would have been affected massively by Covid if I had studied in the NL during 2019-22.

Hard luck. Next time make a video about you searching for acommodation well in advance. Who knows? Oh, by the way, Leiden University is more right wing and legalistic in political science and more oriented towards the international organisations in The Hague. Amsterdam is more left wing, more ideological and (in my opinion) purer "political" science. And also the possibilities in Amsterdam are far greater as the UvA has the biggest political science faculty in Europe (maybe even in the world). I studied Political Science at the UvA 35 years ago. They actively encourage to take also knowledge in from other faculties (UvA is very big). My son will start Political Science at the UvA this September. I might have provided a temporary solution for free as I live 45 minutes away from The Hague Campus (door to door by public transport and bike!). Although I should say that I am not aware of any legal issues (taxes, income sharing, registrations and whatnot). So, maybe that was not possible after all. But, not tried, not gained.

That's not really true though.. Having actually studied at that department, I would say the political preferences at the political science department in Leiden tend to the left, but for the curriculum it doesn't really matter anyway, which is as far as I'm aware just as much a social science based on statistical research methodologies as the curriculum at the UvA. At Leiden university you're actually also allowed to apply to courses in for example Delft and Rotterdam, so the size of the UvA doesn't necessarily mean you're more limited at other universities. I haven't looked into it for a while, but the studies offered on campus Den Haag are sometimes less focused on becoming a researcher. If I'd have to guess I'd say political preferences matter even less there, since they'll cooperate more with faculties outside of Leiden.
