Applying Yorkshire Grit is an easy process and is intended to be applied after sanding a turning to 220 grit. In this video Larry demonstrates how to apply the sanding paste to a turning. He is preparing the piece for it's final finish. The final finish does need to be one that will completely dry like Polyurethane, Lacquer, Hampshire Sheen or any other permanent finish.

I've used Yorkshire grit on most of my work and so far I have not encountered any problems with any follow up treatment, from oils to varnishes. To qualify this comment I would like to say I am new to turning but have probably completed about 100 pieces in the 6 month I've been doing it. Once again thankyou Larry, great quality video and information. Lee

I really like Yorkshire Grit and the white fine finish. I have used Danish oil after using Yorkshire Grit, works well, makes the grain pop, in my humble opinion

Do you prefer Yorkshire grit to Acks paste? I am from Yorkshire - we don’t seem to be able to get Acks over here.

Llarry, great video with an excellent thumbnail! Sorry your video never showed up when I was researching abrasive paste for my last video. I wonder if you populate your About tab might make you show up more on suggested or searched videos? Keep up the good work.

You know, I haven't tried Ack's. However, Ack's didn't come along until well after Yorkshire Grit.

I don't understand how you can apply a finish on top of this grit paste if it has wax??? Wouldn't the wax keep the final finish from curing??
@Brentwoodwoodcrafts

wondered the same, before oiling I wipe down with denatured alcohol to clean off the wax

Does the wax in the Yorkshire not keep the finish from curing properly?
@missouriturner
@missouriturner 4 жыл бұрын
As long as the top coat is not a penetrating oil it will not. Film finishes will be fine. i.e. lacquer, poly etc.

@@missouriturner Thanks for the quick reply. I've stopped using micro mesh and am using glu boost followed by EEE then plastic polish on my pens. Seems like all sanding abrasives have wax in them.

Microfine is mainly for plastics. But I've used both on woods and plastics before and it's been fine

Hampshire sheen is not food safe. The Y.Grit works good but the wax in it does limit the types of finish you can apply over it.

There are many that would disagree with you. I am not a scientist nor do I play one on tv but, there are many who agree that once fully cured just about any finish is food safe. Some finishes take weeks or longer to fully cure. I would not be afraid to eat of this one... but, I also like raw oysters....
