Donald Trump keep working at it if your in a good tech school program you can learn all aspects of the paint and body industry. learn as much as you can about everthing , dont wory about being fast at body work . wory about being good . if your good at what you do the speed will come . I've been painting since i was 13 im 44. i still love the way a finished job looks .

I appreciate the video! Currently 19 years old attending a trade school for auto body collision & just got my first job in a body shop about a month ago learning automotive painting! I really do enjoy the work and I definitely agree that this trade is more skill oriented then the labor side of things BUT that's what makes it fun and enjoyable for me is knowing what I'm doing is basically an form of art :) I can't wait for what's to come and I am grateful for the opportunity I was given.

One thing never leave anywhere on bad terms always leave the door open so if things change you can always go back don't think the grass is greener for everyone and not all places are bad places just may not be right for you. Live and learn in life not learn to live.

I'm a 16 year old apprentice here in the states and I've used the only $1,500 I had from my savings on equipment and paints to practice at home and get me started. I enrolled in an auto paint class and they offered me an apprenticeship that starts in January, hopefully they give me a good opportunity. Thanks for the advice Gunny I really appreciate your videos man. Cheers

Nailed it!!! Im an 18 year veteran as a professional wrestler and we paid dues from the older generation to see if we had it meaning were we worth being trained in the field for the profession. Why should they pass on the torch and knowledge if we cant perform simple tasks like... Booking hotels,flights,cars and countless other things.... Painting is not a physically demanding profession once you get muscle memory but like you said... Its skillful.... Pay your dues and earn your keep.... If you are lucky enough to be a student of a veteran painter.. Remember..... Everything is a test.... Including your additude. ❤❤❤❤ Now go paint some shit!!!!🎉🎉🎉😂😂😂

hello gunman,,at 6min.32 sec in the video,u were sanding the putty..but i never saw that sanding block before.can u tell me what was it? it may help me a lot to improve sanding some big panel like that in the video..I'm here just using the hard plastic one with blue rubber on the other side.its OK to use it if just a small panel.but for the big panel it hurt my finger's skin,because I had to hold the sandpaper onto the sanding block while sanding the putty..sometimes in the end of the day,my fingers bleed a little bit.

one of the best tips is Let Well Enough Alone ! I am self thought I had 2mo as a helper then the painter quit. So there I was. I tried to slick out every job only to put runs or dry spray leaving holidays , tiger striping you name it after . af tr er paying for supplies I barely made 100 a week for 80-90 hrs a week (not flag time ). but now it's been 19 yrs and I don't regret a minute. now only work 4 days a week and make 80-90 k a yr (could be more with better helpers )plus I do some cash collision jobs on the side.

Perfectly imformative. My father taught me at the age of 10 I was wet sending laqiur paint and spreading bog. By the age of 15-I started working with him at a restoration/fabrication shop making crumps. By 17 I was spraying all over jobs on the restorations and simple smash jobs. If you love what you, stick with it thru the worst of times, its all the more glorious!

unfortunately real apprenticeships in many trades are kinda dying in the states. this last generation really doesn't feel obligated to teach young guys, like they were taught. And now there are huge shortages of experienced workers in alot of trades...
@miles11we

It's the same down under, there are a few placed that spend the time to train the kids but it's all about them and money at the end of it these days. On the other hand, a lot of the kids can't be bothered learning and treat the tradesmen who do teach them rudely and don't appreciate what they are doing for them. So we are stuck importing foreign labour to fill the gap from a generation who'd rather sit on their ass behind a computer than doing an honest hard day's work.

I know this vid is a few years old, but Gunny you have summed up life/work in general. My current career I’ve been in for 18 years, it’s not a trade but I did complete a trade when I left school. After 18 years in my current career I still tell junior staff and even myself, life is like and apprenticeship; accept the fact you’re at the bottom and you don’t know anything and no one owes you anything except passing on their knowledge when you’ve earnt respect!! I’ve only just found your channels and I am hooked!! Thankyou for your great vids and rare infectious/motivating attitude !!

Started with sweeping the floor, unmasking the previous days putty ups, emptying the bins, washing countless cars and smoko shop runs.. my first hands on task was a bucket of scuff stuff and a piece of grey scotch.. i was super proud when they cobbled me together my own rubbing down bucket.. till i somehow misunderstood the lesson on blocking repairs with a putty rubber and was shown the block marks... learning to feather edges and basic masking then finally getting to spray hi fill, then progress to edging out a guard if you doing well a radiator support... before you know it your first time in the booth with 2k and a shitty charade quarter panel and you suceed and feel king shit in ya spray suit gun in hand just like the tradie you been idolizing for 12 months.. i loved my apprenticeship and the tradies that taught me well. Im out of the trade now but often dabble on the side but i miss those early days being excited and proud about work

Hey Gunman, I am currently doing a 2 year diploma in this field, I love it, but I'm 24 and have a life/rent/bills etc. so I work when I'm not at college. I couldn't quit my job to get into a low paid apprenticeship as I simply couldn't afford my rent if I did. Any advice? Cheers.

+nVr I would get out of this field. If your lucky to paint in your apprenticeship the painter will not teach you everything...Why? Why would he teach someone to paint better than him to take his job? You will end up losing money for the first couple years if you get paid anything worth wild at all other then that they will just reap the benefits of having an extra painter for the price of a porter.
