I agree! This must be a very hard and exhausting job! Airplanes non stop, no break. But, also everybody else who works on the ground is important! This includes the hard working baggage loaders, the ramp agents, the deicing crew, the dispatchers and many more. Without all these important people we would not be able to do a single flight.

These videos are simply amazing and unmatched anywhere else on youtube, when I was younger it was all just books and pictures, I remember reading a book "flying the big jets", and then came some videos on vhs, like just plane and things like that. Now we have this amazing platform and this amazing content and for young people wanting to get into aviation, this is simply amazing. So big thanks to you for putting these together, I hope you continue.

Excellent prioritisation of flying the aircraft from the first officer. It shows how error induced from high workload doesn't have to be lots of tasks but just one extra task at the wrong moment, in this case the frequency change to tower coming just as she was tasked with the flaps setting from Captain Stefan, requiring attention to detail on speed check and correct setting. Absolutely no probs, routinely corrected without drama from the other tower frequency controller and all good.

This approach was a good example of why the speed brake should only be used very cautiously when established on the glide slope. It has a huge effect on the pitch and therefore rate of descent. You can see the aircraft's vertical speed undulating every time the speed brake is used (in and out maybe 4 or 5 times on final approach) and as a result making the G/S tracking and speed control more difficult than needed, with the engines adding thrust at times when it really wasn't desired. Some airlines require the aircraft to be at approach speed + 20kts maximum by 1,000ft RA. Under those requirements, this approach was probably
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos 5 күн бұрын
Thank you very much for your detailed feedback! Speedbrake use during final approach is sometimes a good help to slow down to VFE next or so. But it also comes with the downside of possible short term pitch changes which may make the vertical speed control more difficult. Especially with a lightweight Airbus A319 it is not that easy to slow down from 160 at 4 DME to the final approach speed which may be at about 120 knots. It gives us only about one mile to reduce the speed by 40 knots. With an A321 it would be a very easy task because of the higher approach speed. This was the first time that I used the speedbrakes at an A319 during the final speed reduction. In between, I did another A319 approach to LHR without using the speedbrakes at the end. It worked out ok. We were also stabilized as required. Our stabilization criteria are different between "normal" approaches and approaches at which ATC requires high speeds on short final.
@mattrowlandhall
@mattrowlandhall 5 күн бұрын
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Very interesting and I appreciate also your time for a detailed response. It's interesting to compare how other pilots from different airlines go about achieving the same ATC speed control requests, compared to my airline. Speed control at LHR is so critical with the spacing so tight. I totally agree the different aircraft types and weights never make two approaches the same. The atmospheric conditions also have an effect and throwing a radio frequency miss-selection in there too just at the wrong time quickly increases the workload. Quite often we chicken out and request 160 to 5nm, but then it seems for my airline our approach stability criteria is more strict than Eurowings - maximum Vapp +10 kts by 1,000ftRA, unless ATC request speed control and then we can increase to maximum Vapp +20 kts at 1,000ftRA. My previous airline was up to Vapp + 30kts by 1,000ft RA for any approach. It's all very interesting. Happy flying and I'll listen out for you on the radios! Amazing content as always and I wish my airline would allow me to make similar videos haha!

Hi Stefan, Great video! When I go to Heathrow plane spotting, I always like listening to the Director and Tower. I like it because it's always non-stop and I like seeing the A380 and so on. Recently, I've been going to Gatwick plane spotting, but it's not the same there as I didn't see a lot of A380s and Boeing 777s. But the ATC at Gatwick do a fantastic job, as well as Heathrow! When you were established on 09L, I noticed your first officer changed from Director to the wrong Tower frequency. Then I heard that the controller corrected her, but the first officer was already on the other frequency. I've watched the documentaries about Heathrow in the past, but what is the 'Channel 10' that the ground control were mentioning? I've never known that at Heathrow. Quite a few years ago, I used to go into the British Airways training centre at Hatton Cross (you see as you land on both 27 runways). I was landing a British Airways Boeing 777 at JFK as part of birthday celebration which I thoroughly enjoyed! Fantastic experience. Later this year, I'm flying a superior F-35B Lightning Jet in a simulator at the RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk. I'm really looking forward to it. When I next go plane spotting at Heathrow with my radio, I hope to hear you over the frequencies! Kind regards, Louis

I noticed this too. She misses the correction, contacts the tower controller handling take offs and has to be referred by him to the correct frequency. Possibly Heathrow tower sometimes operates on the single frequency of 118.5 and this is what she'd expected?

@@angussssy What you see here is something which happens to every pilot once in a while: He or she does not understand an ATC message correctly and changes to a wrong frequency. The frequency was corrected by ATC, but at the same time I asked her to do a configuration change of the flaps. To do this, she has to check for the speed and other things. It is noisy in the cockpit (For the videos, the noise is partly surpressed). Depending on her audio volume setting, it may have been very difficult to understand ATC in parallel to my request. Then she changed to the frequency. It was the other tower and they gave us the correct frequency. Everything calm, safe and professional. No need to worry or talk about. By the way: As professional pilots, we follow this guidline: First aviate, then navigate and then communicate. This was exactly what happened here.

I can assure you that people mistakenly calling first officers “copilots” happens a lot more. 🤔 Her priority was to assist the captain in flying the aircraft. Had she taken more notice of the ATC, in this particular moment, then that may have impeded her ability to extend the flaps at the wrong speed; a far greater concern. To answer your question, yes this happens every so often. It’s very safe.

Hallo Crew ✈️ cab you explain, how you determine your cruise flightlevel? There's the planned FL from dispatch and the MCDU shows a OPT FL. On this flight you chose not to fly higher but on on other flights you do. What are the reasons? Thank you for another great video, I also like thr footage from the ground ops!✈️
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos 5 күн бұрын
Thank you very much for your financial support of the channel as a member! This helps a lot! The flight level which is planned by dispatch is based on several different factors. One factor is a possible flight level cap enroute for short flights. Reason for this is that short flights shall not block the upper levels for overflights of longer distance flights. These flight level caps are sometimes imposed by Eurocontrol and have to be observed in the planning stage. During the flight, if ATC asks us what our requested level is, we may request a higher level. They may grant a higher than planned level because they now have the real time picture of the traffic. The climb to the higher than planned level does only make sense if we can do an optimum descent thereafter. Sometimes we do not request a higher than planned level because we expect a very early descent. This was the case here.

This is instead of the procedure done in the US. Across the pond they clear every aircraft that goes to tower to land almost immediately even if they are number 2 or 3. In Europe it's different. Land after is used in the UK where the runway is not clear but should be when they touch down and the controller is very busy.

The captain has his or her sidestick in the left hand and uses the right hand for the thrust levers. It is the opposite for the first officer. In an airplane with a classic steering yoke, it is very similar: One hand at the yoke and the other at the thrust levers. When the fist officer gets the promotion to the captain, he or she has to learn to fly with the other hand. It is not very difficult.

The computer voice is calling out our radio altitude. We do have a radio altimeter which measures our altitude above the ground. The first call you usually hear at 2500 feet. How can she remember the taxiway when reading back to atc? I always need to jot down
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos 5 күн бұрын
There are always lots of things happening. Before the approach, we brief the approach and the possible taxi routings to our parking position. This helps a lot and we are not that much surprised about what we hear from ATC. Also, the taxiways are marked like streets. So we can just read the marking and tell ATC where we are. When we get the taxi clearance, we usually type it into the scratchpad of our MCDUs. This helps to remember it.

Curious, why not fly conf full and gear down and fly the speed 160 until 4dme and then manage speed thereafter
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos 7 күн бұрын
Good question. When the gear is extended, large gear doors are opening and closing during the process. Theses doors provide a huge amount of drag. When delaying the extension of the gear to 4 DME or so, we use this additional drag to slow the plane down. Also, flying the final approach in the A319 with gear down and flaps full until 4 DME would make way more noise, use more fuel and we would be very close to the maximum speed in this configuration. I did both variations of the approach several times. With an A321 it is very easy because of the high approach speeds. You can just configure the plane a little later than usual and everything is fine. With an A319 it is more difficult because of the low approach speed. The A319 is also a good glider and does not want to get slower.

To make a long story short: because Germanwings GmbH still exists as part of Eurowings. So the air operator certificate (AOC) and callsign remained active under Eurowings for operational and regulatory reasons. That basically means that the company is still there, even though the “Germanwings” brand isn’t used anymore.

You are lucky that your airline still allows you to hand fly the SID at your discretion. A lot of airlines now want the automatics on as soon as possible after departure. I wonder if this will have negative impacts in the future if it risks pilots becoming overreliant on automatics and losing proficiency in hand flying. There have been a lot of near-incidents where the autopilot does something unexpected and pilots are reluctant to immediately disengage and "FLY THE PLANE"
