Great video as always. In the UK, ATC can give you instructions to legally go faster than 250kts under 10,000ft; in certain airspace. This is because In Class A and C (no B in UK), ATC are required to separate IFR from VFR traffic, so higher speeds are safe. However, in D, E, F and G they are not, so 250kts is a strict requirement. I assume she gave you “free speed” because speeding up would slow your climb rate and allow you to use your energy to accelerate. Another great example of how excellent the UK controllers are!
@VonycBln11 күн бұрын
250kt below FL100 feels like a 30kmh restriction in residential zones... it doesn't 'feel right' to deviate from that even if you are cleared to do so .... or getting landing clearance in the us... doesnt work being a german :)
@11clarkm11 күн бұрын
@@VonycBln I understand what you mean 😂 to be clear; we have “free speed” or “speed unrestricted” but we also have “no ATC speed restriction” which means there is no speed restriction set by ATC but you should still follow the 250kts limit under 10,000ft.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos10 күн бұрын
Thanks for your good and detailed feedback! We do not want to fly faster than 250 knots below 10,000 feet. Only if ATC requests us to do so, we would do it. Reason is the birdstrike risk and the possible damages which may be much worse when flying faster. I agree that London ATC controllers are doing a fantastic job! Please help me and tell everybody about the channel and the videos! Thanks in advance for your support!
@CaptainRoss110 күн бұрын
Thanks for another great video. I’m now retired from London ATC after 35 years. Sure we will have spoken many times ! With reference to the question from your viewers about 250kts below 100. From an ATC outbound radar point of view the restriction of 250 kts allows a/c following the same departure route, and often at Heathrow departing only 120 seconds apart, not to catch each other up when held down at 6000 ft because of inbound traffic. If there is no danger of catch up then “free speed” is granted. It’s then up to individual airline SOP’s whether pilots choose to accelerate. As you say most, but not all, will choose to stay at 250 for possible bird strike or even to provide better rate of turn if avoiding action is required ( if we mess up ! ).

Or even at Orlando airport in Florida, you may taxi for 25 minutes after landing if you need to taxi to terminal C and landed on a runway very far away. Surprised your company aren't using the new Airbus SOP to start engine 1 first. I believe it's changed so that there is no ambiguity for ground staff when doing single engine taxi out. That was a bit of a hole in that closed bit of taxiway A, and the FO is a superb pilot.

Nice job. Can I ask if the Airbus ground speed mini function still works with manual thrust? Presumably it would change the magenta speed bug if there was a gust, but not change the actual thrust?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos12 күн бұрын
Good question! The ground speed mini function works independently from autothrust or manual thrust. As long as the speed is managed, the speed target for the approach speed takes the ground speed mini into account. So the speed target may jump if there is a gust. The autothrust would follow the speed target automatically. When flying with manual thrust, the pilot flying should follow the speed target manually and adjust the thrust in accordance.

Excellent video as always! Captain what about the latest Airbus startup procedure recommendation? Engine 1 should be started first.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos12 күн бұрын
Our SOP recommends to start engine 2 first. But if we would do single engine taxi out, we would have to start engine 1 first because single engine taxi out or taxi in is done with engine 1 running.

Nice that we got another full flight video again already, thank you:) And also great to see EDDK. How often do you fly out of cologne? Is it a separate base or is there a lot of crew sharing between Cologne and Düsseldorf?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos16 күн бұрын
Thank you very much for your financial support of the channel as a member! CGN and DUS are separate bases. But due to the close proximity, you will very often see crews from DUS helping out in CGN and vice versa. The company provides the transportation and also the hotel, if the crew member needs to do more than one flight in a row from the other base.
@Her0Phi116 күн бұрын
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos thanks for your quick response. :) One more thing I wondered about the line-up procedure in Heathrow: Isnt there a risk that the jet blast of the departing plane in front will launch some FOD like small rocks onto the plane waiting behind?

I do not think that this is a risk due to the distance of the airplanes. In addition, the runways are very clean.

Welcome to Britain, where we love to queue. Ihre Englisch Kenntnisse sind ausgezeichnet, ich wünsche meiner Deutsch besser war. love the checklist item that involves closing the windows. Which pilots forgot to close the windows.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos7 күн бұрын
Thank you so much for your kind words! The checklists are designed to cover important items which may happen or are not covered otherwise. We can open the sliding windows in the cockpit and especially on hot days, we love to do that to get some fresh air into the cockpit. It can happen to any pilot that he or she forgets to close the windows properly. Sure, we could close them also any time later. But it would be very distracting. So the checklist is a good tool to help us here.

Been interested in aviation for a long while, so when I hear the checklists being briefed before taxi, take off, landing and after etc, it always seems more complicated listening to the checklists than when it's being spoken I imagine. It's nevertheless always very interesting to listen to everything that goes into it to ensure everything is in order for the flight.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos13 күн бұрын
Thank you so much for sharing your personal feedback! The checklists are very Import. They make sure that we do not forget anything Important. Even after thousands of hours in the same airplane, we use them. It is not complicated. Just a matter of training and experience.
