Appreciate this is a two year old video… still love my Lee Filters. Changed the Big Stopper for the Pro Glass IRND 10 stop which doesn’t have a blue cast. If you drop Lee glass filters they will shatter, whereas some competitors glass filters will literally bounce!

The colour cast on the Lee ND filters is well known. They've introduced a set of Pro Glass IRND ND filters that have no colour cast, but they are a touch on the expensive side

Kase is really making the only affordable neutral high quality filters I've tried. Hoya's Solas and HD3 filters are kind bendingly good too, but also not cheap.

Hi Hudson grt information. If 100mm fliter is sufficient for this lens why did nikon make a 112mm unusuall screw in filter thread hood? Maybe they would have given a 100mm screw in filter thred for the lens itself.. I like kase for what they're doing but obiously scared to use these clip in filters in humid n dry lands Any chances that they may come up with front magnetic filters for this lenses?

Stuart, that's rad. I didn't know that till your comment. Thank you! I'll amplify it with credit. The Nisi filter holders don't fit nearly as well as the original plastic Nikon 112 threaded hood. Anon, the hood won't really be optimal for avoiding direct oblique light on the lens, but it will let you share thos big filters out front with no fear of vignetting.

Thanks for this. I don't have the 14-24 S (sticking with the 14-30 for now). I do own the NiSi Advanced Kit and a couple of other NDs. As your tests illustrate, they are superb, with no perceptible colour shift. I use the Epson V750 for my vintage film images (35mm, medium and larger format) and often use the wet scanning kit (didi a tutorial on that), which really makes a difference.

Yep, I've used wetscans with my Minolta dimage scan multipro (which does up to 6x9) and also a v750 flatbed. I can attest the results with the Z7 and a good backlight are comparable if not better with a very small fraction of the effort and time. :) ya, NiSi makes great glass.

Happy New Year to you and the family Hudson! Thanks for the work and sharing! Off topic...my Z 70-200 f2.8 VR S lens came this week...absolutely incredible! (used your link of course bud). I really wanted the 14-24 but the filter situation is just too hard a pill for me to swallow...I already have PolarPro's Cinema line of ND/CP and the PM Edition II VND filters by PolarPeo and love them, nice stuff ...hard to justify carrying more filters for just ONE lens. So I picked up Z 20mm f1.g S...it's great for astro and video and it takes the filters I have....also I have the AF-S 10-24mm DX I can use with the FTZ adapter for a wide zoom.

The 20 is a gem. I keep waffling on selling mine now that I have the 14-24. I have to do some side by side star work first. I did just figure out (with a comment here on KZbin), that the 70-200 accepts that big 112mm threaded Hood from the 14-24 S. So does the 24-70 2.8 S. Why doesn't Nikon market that news? Crazy. You could use the 112s with any of the holy trinity Z glass!

I have a couple NiSi filters & I really like them. I have their Night Sky Filter and a couple round (screw in) 6 Stop ND filters (a 72mm and a 77mm).

Shooting the filter box, holding up two fingers etc. Nikon need to build in some sort of stacking/bracketing markers. Be so useful to be able to bookend frame sequences. 👍👍

Do you mean the 2.8 24-70? Do you plan to get the 14-24? My favorite 82mm is really Hoyal Solas IRND, but if you buy the 14-24, then you can slap it's 112mm hood on the 24-70 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8 S lenses as well. That might make the 112mm filters makes sense. You just need a Nikon 14-24 112mm hood. It fits that whole 2.8 Zoom S trinity system.

It's part of that larger datacolor at with the colorimeter and cube. I usually carry the little colorchecker I linked in the description from xrite. :)

Thank you for this video! Have you ever REALLY needed info and said hell with it, I will search KZbin fingers crossed and boom- some smart credible person is there telling you EXACTLY what you need to know. On July 9 I am going to London my 3rd time this year and I just got a Nikon z7II with the "holy trinity" lenses in 2.8. I couldn't find a filter for the 14-24mm and couldn't really find good info with searches- My "search-fu" is weak today. Anyhow lifesaver!!! Oh- using the wide angle for some cityscape and interior stuff. I assist with some gov't agencies in the UK in my real job and I am fortunate enough through these great folks to get some great access to historical buildings but lugging a ton of gear isn't an option.

Hudson, great video as always. I'm a little confused on how I can use a grey/white card. If I use a filter that has an unwanted colour cast, and also a 18% grey card, or a white card, can I simply use the white balance dropper in Lightroom to select the card, and that will correct for all the colour cast? Or is white balance only part of it and I also need to correct hues etc.? Keep up the great work! I'm really looking forward to this Z 14-24 2.8 once I save up for it.

Hi Hudson, and Happy New Year. As a landscaper, i tend to find the 14-30 a bit smudgy on the edges at 14mm, (mostly all i shoot at with the lens),...even at F/5.6 to F/8. Does the 14-24S clean this up? Debating on if I should sell the 14-30 and spend another 1500 for the 14-24.

Hudson, I noticed that the Kase clip in filters has a UV filter and a Neutral night filter. Would it make sense to have one of these in your camera at all times to protect the sensor from dust? Per you charts, there may be a slight degradation in sharpness?

I'm gonna say no Jay. I'm sure people will do it, but your sensor isn't in any danger of damage. You'd need to blow off and clean the UV just like you do the sensor. The sensor is really very easy to clean in these cameras and the UV filter is only going to add the possibility of degrading the image without giving you any added protection (like a UV in front of your lens element) or effect (like polarizing or ND).

Hey Hudson. Great insight into all of this. I learn so much from watching your videos. I’m a little late to the party here but only recently bought the 14-24 f2.8 S lens and immediately bought the Nisi round filter holder with 6 and 10 stop NDs to go with it. I did not realize until this video that Nisi also made a v6 100mm Square filter holder. I already have a Nisi 100mm v6 holder to fit both my 24-70 S and 70-200 S lens. So have I wasted a lot of money buying the dedicated round hood and filters for the 14-24 S? Should (could) I have simply bought an adapter ring for the Nisi v6 holder I already have to attach it to the 14-24 and use the same 100mm square filters instead of carrying two systems?

I suppose it depends on what and where you are shooting and the amount of gear you can carry around. For me, the NiSi lens-hood solution allows me to keep a filter on the lens to protect it from damage. For my 82mm 24-70 and 77mm 70-200, I am using the rather elegant and sexy Polar Pro Summit system with its proprietary filters but this system does not work with the 14-24. Such a shame… Also, as an alternative to the Kase rear-end ND filters which fit across the camera sensor, I am using the Haida rear-end filters which fit into the lens, following the replacement of another piece of plastic with a metal piece. I prefer the idea of adding my filter to the lens rather than the camera.

Hey Hudson. Thanks for comparing the filters, as I ha e been shopping for both UV @ND 5 or 6 stop and 10 stop for my 24-70mm f4 Z lens. Have always used Hoya, but having trouble locating the Solas filters in 72 mm. Amazon has the Hoya ProND 6 stop in 72 mm. Is it worth waiting until the Solas is available? Hey Ken, I'd go to Hoya, use my discount code from the links page www.hudsonhenry.com/atslinks and consider getting an 82mm and adapting up to it. That way if you decide to get the 14-30 or another lens with a bigger ring, you'll be set. I really never buy filters smaller than 82 for that reason. EXCEPT, for UV filters as a protection for my front element and then I tend to only use HD3 UV filters since I just don't see any image degradation and they are bombproof.

Hi Hudson, did the 112mm NiSi filters from B&H come with the leather pouch? They don’t list it in their “In The Box” description (only the warranty), and in accessories, the first item shown is a filter pouch, so it kind of threw me off track and I haven’t ordered them yet. I posted a question to them, but they have yet to answer. That said, do you have a preference between the 112mm screw-in system vs. their 100mm square approach? Yes, they come in the leather pouches inside the box. If you have the 24-70 2.8 S and/or the 70-200 2.8 S, then you might consider the round filters. All three lenses accept that big 112mm Hood the 14-24 comes with so you can share the round filters. The Nisi square and round holder doesn't fit very well on the other lenses. Only the 14-24.

You too John. Ha, I use CC too. I've used PS since version 4 and I've organized LR since version 1. I also use ON1 and I vastly prefer finish editing with for a lot of reasons, speed, simplicity, flexibility, presets that leave underlying raw processing intact, but I'm never far from CC. You won't regret that lens one bit. If you consider using my links, I"d much appreciate it.

No, I did focus it. I used my Z7 in the studio which doesn't have the Focus hold setting. I was surprised how easy it was to autofocus or manual focus with the 10 stop in place. These new cameras rock.

And dust caught on them would be less obvious as the same dust on the sensor glass. I shoot a lot of timelapse and I really hate spotting dust. For sure about how easy it is to focus with NDs with mirrorless - it's no issue. I've used 10 stop ND on my a7III 10-15 minutes after sunset and not only can I see the subject on the LCD, but the exposure is always close to right on! By the way - I'm a PDXer as well. Glad to see you're representing the PNW.

Hudson I bought a 14-24 S last week and returned it. Coming from Canon I felt my wide angles were much sharper. Now I’m back to the drawing board for a wide angle and considering the 14-30 F4. Is that the route to go as many folks on YT seem to give it high praise, or do I go back to the 14-24 and try again. I loved the built quality of the lens, but was hard to justify the 2k+ price tag.

Great question, just tested that quick here... You can stack them Polarizer out (it has no outer threads and is very thin). There is a miniscule bit of vignetting (I mean tiny) at 14mm, but it disappears by 16. :-)

Hey Hudson, I recently bought the Nisi filter holder for the Nikon Z 14-24 S to use with my lee big stopper! To my surprise there is a dual flare that appears @14mm, it goes away beyond 20mm! have you had a similar experience? I was using a Z6II.

Great. Channel. With regards to ES2 vs Nikon Scanner - what are you doing to remove dust on the images that Nikon Scanner did automatically with ICE?

Blow them off with a Rocket blower and use a microfiber very carefully if necessary. ICE was nice, but the time savings, ease of use and quality possible with the ES-2 make it highly unlikely I'll ever use anything else for 35mm.

Bummer! No, they are very thin. In fact I tested it stacking an ND with the polarizer over it (it's thin and has no outer threads and it has only the tiniest, itsy bitsy vignette at the extreme corners at 14 and it's gone by a tick past 16 with them stacked.

Hudson, at this point you have both the 14-30 f/4 and the 14-24 f/2.8 S lenses. Since you got the latter, do you find you still have some use for the f/4, or do you now find it completely redundant?

I'm selling the F4 for sure. In a perfect world it might be a lens to take on mountaineering trips, but the new one isn't that heavy or large and it's just hard not to choose it over the F4 as good as that F4 is.

In the field, just natural overcast even forest light. In the studio... You wouldn't believe it. hot lights, panel lights, KINO lights. I think I have to hit about 13 switches to get it set up. :-)

There is just the tiniest little bit of vignette in the tips of the corners putting the polarizer outside the ND. It's gone by 16. The polarizer has to go outside as it has no outer thread.

No NiSi built thier hood to the wider grooves of the 14-24 and it does not fit the other lenses. It's also really unnessesarily heavy. I'm not a fan at all. The hb-97 is by far the better of the two I think.

I much, much prefer kase now that I've tried all the brands. Check out why www.hudsonhenry.com/kase on and I love the 112 form factor. Zero concerns with vignetting even stacking. Especially with the ultra thin and simple kase design. Love that the Nikon 112 hood snaps right on the 24-70 2.8, 70-200, 50 1.2 and 14-30 as well. Brilliant.

@@johanfehr1740 no. I never used filters with my old 14-24 AFS. There are ways, but they're so awkward. The new HB 97 hood system for the Z 2.8s is worth it's weight in gold. So simple.

@@johanfehr1740 nope. Sadly no. It fits the 14-24 S, 24-70 2.8 S, 70-200 S, 50 1.2 S and 14-30 S. Honestly, the 14-30 S is FAR sharper wide open in the corners than the 14-24 AFS at F4. The shorter flange distance and wider mount opened a new world of performance for the engineers designing S glass. The new 14-24 is flat astounding. For well over a decade, I adored my 14-24 AFS but I can't imagine going back to it now.

I really don't use the clip in. I love the round magnetics. No blurring with any of the filters from them that I've tested. They're very close to optically perfect.

Hi, see with the 14-24 2.8 S and the supplied nikon HB-97 hood, do you get any light leaks with the kase magnetic 112mm? They claim not but I see the gap when looking at the hood from behind?

None of the S lenses with hoods have EVER shown any evidence of light leaks ever for me and they all have those little vents. The hb97 in particular? I've used it with cpl, 6, and 10 stop kase filters stacked to get 120s at high noon. No leak at all. Don't worry for a second. I always laugh when I see people claiming it's an issue. It's not.

That hb97 snaps right on all the 2.8 S zooms. You'll find the Kase far more neutral than Lee. I have all of that at www.hudsonhenry.com/kase :)

Sorry second question I have the Nikon 14-24mm f mount could I use that with the case in body filter and will the focus lock wok with the older lens

I think you should be able to see and focus with the old 14-24 too. I haven't tried it, but it's more about the camera sensor and AF than the lens. :-) I think you might struggle with an F4 or F5.6 lens just because it doesn't let in as much light wide open, but not the 2.8s. :-)

NC, UV, Sky the goal of any of them for me is to have as little effect as possible on the image while protecting the lens in rough situations. I eschewed them for years till I scratched a couple of front elements and Hoya asked me to test thier HD3 UV series. I was blown away. I still sometimes remove them for a special scene. It's like a second better lens cap that you can shoot through and pull off to have a perfectly clean element for that special shot. Or it's like armor if the sand and saltwater is blowing.

I had gone off even looking at the 14-24 and plan to keep the 14-30 with my NISI Filter Kit with the flat glass Filters ..So Hudson will that 100mm NISI Filter Holder hold my current NISI 100x150 Flat glass Filters as no ways could I afford the Circular 112mm screw in filters

Yes it does, 100x100mm and 150x100mm filters fit perfectly.

Hi Henry, is it possible to stack the Nisi 112mm circular filters ? I have the 112mm CPL from Nisi but before adding the ND filters I would like to know if this is possible without getting weird distortion, vignetting etc.

There is no distortion stacking an ND atop the cpl, but you get a very small filter ring vignette at 14mm. It's really not bad, but I've been playing with the new magnetic set from Kase and they stack with no vignette. Both are great filters optically.

Sadly NiSi's only fits my 14-24, but the Nikon plastic one does. It also fits the 20 1.8. It's connections are a little thinner than NiSi's and only the 14-24 has the wider grooves to fit it. I mentioned it to them when I tested it.

They make nice stuff. I preferred Hoya's HD3 and Solas filters when I ran comparisons a while back. I don't think you'll go wrong getting the top of the line Hoya, Kase, NiSi, or Breakthrough filters. I've been running some tests and those brands just stand out for optical quality. Kase is sending me some 112 filters for the 14-24 to test and I'll report back on those too.
