I just finished the book, and I have to say it explains the dower mood of it's creator during this interview. There truly is nothing that's particularly "fun" about this book, and I can't imagine what it's like for an artist as sensitive as BWS to carry that story in his head for so long. With that said, Monsters is unequivocally one of the best pieces of graphic literature to ever grace the medium. Truly incredible work and I hope it's creator can gain some piece of mind having finally released it.

I could not put this bloody beautiful beast of a book down. I was utterly captivated by it in every sense. It was beguiling, mesmerising and absolutely unpredictable from beginning to end. This deserves to absolutely cement BWS' place as one of our finest storytellers. Worth the wait. Worth every damned second of the wait. Magnum Opus barely begins to cover the scale of what this amazing artist has created.

My buddy was a fan in 1970s so we ditched school in Wyoming and took a bus to New York and located the studio and knocked on the door and Barry let us in and told us not to touch anything and we talked a bit and were on our way but been a fan since.

My number one go-to artist. In many ways BWS is the reason I do what I do. His pre-ralphaelite style and wonderful storytelling has been key to all of my comic book ventures. For years I searched for news of him after he "disappeared". Nothing. So eventually I gave up. I assumed he was done with the industry and just stepped away. I was aware of Monsters but had no idea he was still working on it. Great to see a recent interview like this!

reviewing this wonderful interview. I really hope old Barry has had the curiosity to look how the market has changed in the last 20 years where most of the interest and creativity and even sells many times are in comics that are totally realistic, humaine, nuanced, that range all kinds of genres, and where french comics, american, comis, japaneses commics have continued to influence each other. I would advice him to read so many thing that might bring him the energy to do a last thing not so dark and sad as monsters. something joyful. and maybe, british.

Great interview thank u so much for doing this. Mr Barry is a huge inspiration to me. He is very detail oriented and careful - very deliberate and all about business from the looks of it. I am the same - youll never see me in any fun or smiling tbh - I too have a mindset where yes u have to be kind of 'crazy' - i dedicated 10 years of my life to any free moment, working on 1 script. It's the script for my comic. The dedication one has to have is enormous and im only now drawing it. I look up to Mr Barry bc he is one of the few who rly stuck with it and showed the honesty of that journey here. Sometimes u fall off, then u get back on - there's pain - there's frustration - and then of course - u just DO THE WORK. You may want to get 3 pages done in a day but only get 2 panels done. That's just what it is and u have to accept it like a man and continue on the grueling path. I can sense he has that quality of keeping on - He reminds me a bit of Stanley Kubrick in this way. I'm so happy for all his success. Hope i can one day achieve big things with my comic and get to thank him-

Met BWS at a NY comic con in the early 80's . Would you believe there was only 1 other fan at his table ? I am an immense fan I used write to him in the 70's . I am so happy this has been published (already ordered ) after all the teasing on the website for all these years . CONGRATS BARRY... WELL DONE .

I'm thrilled to see such an in-depth interview with someone who has been such an inspiration to me for years, and who is notoriously difficult to get hold of. I'm not sure he realises just how good he is, and just how much money he could be making. Very much an old school artist, and a fabulous interview. Thank you for this - Monsters is an amazing book!

Got, "Monsters," and it's a gem. I got it, primarily, because I'm working on my own graphic novel, since I'm a traditional graphic illustrator who works in pen and ink. I, therefore, sought out Graphic novels rendered in black and white ink drawings and stumbled onto "Monsters". I downloaded a sample of it through my Kindle account, and saw mind-blowing art that reminded me, somewhat, of my own drawings. So I got it, and read it through in one day. A Great book.

Comics are art and story, a visual narrative form on the page... if you are both a writer and an artist, comics is the perfect medium. What Jack Kirby was to Barry, BWS, Bernie Wrightson, Alan Moore, and Neil Gaiman were to me... I can't wait to read Monsters!

Barry Smith's lived in the USA (presumably) since forever and is still such a Brit. It is great fun to watch Brian Hibbs wrestle with the characteristic understatement that goes along with that.

A writer and artist like BWS has been trying to bring nuance and character and heart to mainstream comics for 50+ years and in a lot of ways? The fruits of that labour exist in the YA market more than anywhere else. It's a gigantic market-far outselling the superhero genre-and honestly people need to know that.
