I agree its not a good look that he can't put up the points he should be, but he also has 30 millions dollars of teammates that have done none of that. Im willing to bet that if the other 3 actually showed up matthews would be producing a lot more.

It's not only new fans wondering, some experts wonder that too. Like Finnish commentators found it funny that U18 players need to wear them and their skill level and speed is pretty insane regardless and as soon as they turn 19 it's a hinderance. It's probably more of an image thing and NHL is selling with the faces of the players.

I think the guys in beer league who don’t wear them and have to pay the dental/medical bills, and go to their job the next morning are nuts. For pros, I get it. Yes, there is an image component. Your peripheral vision is better without it. The fact that players who don’t wear them can play at a high level is not evidence that there is zero difference. Anyone who has played both ways can attest to the difference. I played with a half shield for a bit until I scored a goal with my mouth on an errant shot. I preferred it, but not enough to do that again.

It's actually in the rules right now if you don't have an injury you can't wear a full cage. I would guess it's probably because you can't have a league with fighting and that allows full cages at the same time.

I dont understand why the Jets are playing right into the Avs hand its like they think they can beat the Avs at their own game. They need to get back to their system and stingy defensive system and stop trying to llay run and gun hockey against arguably the best team that plays that style. The problem in Toronto really seems to be the mentality. When the pressure is on, the players get bogged down under the weight and can’t change the trajectory. Look at Domi vs Marner. Domi keeps trying. He keeps pushing and he’ll almost try to create something from nothing. When the pressure grows on the puck, marner’s success drops. He’s a time and space player. The players don’t suit his style. The leafs really missed Nylander in games 1-3, him coming back game 4 was tough on him. Out of the speed of the game, on a line that makes no sense. Marner has to be on the third tomorrow. Nylander should be on the top line or 2nd. Marner could take advantage of facing up against the third and fourth Boston lines.

Unless you have an injury you are not allowed to wear a full mask. I would guess it has to do with the fact there is fighting in the NHL. It would be difficult to reconcile fighting rules and have full masks allowed.

Honestly, I love how people are making this matthews thing to be a big deal. If Matthews had 4 goals and 10 points in 4 games then I would say it’s a big blow for the maple leafs. The guy has 1 goal and at most 2 assists for three points. I don’t think it will make a difference if Matthews plays tomorrow night or not. I think the same outcome will occur.
