This is the time of year I crawl around looking for perennials to emerge, every few days there's something new poking out! It's also a good time for deals where big box stores discount perennials that got stung but are going to be fine if cleaned up, score! The daily in & out of a few plants I've overwintered & new babies is good exercise for me 😂 Thanks Jim! Edit: I finally got some UV resistant markers, I've got lots of labels with no names to re-mark. Worth the cost!

Great information especially this time of year when we tend to prematurely prune, transplant, etc. All good intentions but not great results. I love when you give permission to take something out if it's not performing well or making you happy . Life is too short for gardeners guilt. Wondering - how did you become interested in gardening/landscaping even before you had your business?

Hey Jim, love your videos. Very informative as I am in your same zone. I noticed some brown leaves recently on my frost proof gardenias that were planted last spring. I had one that actually died. I'm not sure if it was diseased already since the other 14 or so wintered alright. As I mentioned though, some of the other plants that were healthy looking just a few weeks ago are starting to show some health issues. I'm not sure if this is frost damage from a few weeks ago or something else. We've never had any issues with other gardenia varieties. The plant leaves are not yellowing, but are turning a duller green color with some turning brown as I mentioned. They get morning sun and late afternoon partial shade. Thanks for any advice you may have.

Thank you for all your information! I’m in the upstate portion of SC. We are zone 8a, but just barely. So very good information. We had several lorapetulum plants that grew much to big, so I cut them back 1/3 last year. They filled back in, but I was able to keep them at the same height. It sounds like it’s about time to do my next 1/3 cut back. Then they will finally be at a manageable height again. I do have a question, I haven’t been able to find information on. We have 7 star jasmine plants in various spots in our back yard. Two are two years old, the others are a year old. They have all been doing great until a few weeks ago. I’m guessing it’s because of the hard freeze? The stems on some of the plants, split open. Not on the full plant, but on the upper portion. We’d had some very strong winds through the area, as well as the freeze. Can that cause the vine to split open? If so, should I cut it back to where it stopped, or can the plant still grow on those stems?

My daffodils USUALLY don’t die back all the way until VERY late summer. While I do leave the foliage on them they can look quite unappealing, any suggestions on how to camouflage them? Right now their planted almost in front of the bed, I keep adding on to the area so I’m going to have to do some moving of plants and bulbs, but I would like to disguise them somehow this year. In fact my garden is so Willy nilly that it’s a garden that only I can appreciate. No rhyme or reason to it but I’m going to start moving things around so it makes more sense. It always happens to me because I start out small then it gets bigger over time.😵💫and right now it’s dysfunctional. So any suggestions on what to plant to hide all of the daffodils leaves ? 🌷💚🙃 zone 6a if that helps and considered full sun. Thank you Jim 🌷💚🙃
@greenthumbelina73312 жыл бұрын
Judy McKerrow, I know you are looking for an answer from Jim, but this is what I do in zone 5a. If the daffodil leaves are long enough I tie them loosely into an overhand knot. That way the leaves can die back naturally and you can plant new annuals right beside them to hide the dying leaves without disturbing the bulbs. 💚If the daffodil leaves are short, I pin them down with a landscape staple, being careful not to break them off, to within an inch from the ground until the leaves die back, then plant around them. I hope this is helpful. ~Margie
