There was a study done years ago that showed evidence that playing music from dementia patients childhood/the music they enjoyed the most help stimulate their memory. I saw a video of a near catatonic man start dancing around the best he could then spoke to the person filming for the first time in a very long time.

Just putting these here to make it easier for myself to learn the lyrics :)) God bless you all Life is not a highway strewn with flowers, Still it holds a goodly share of bliss, When the sun gives way to April showers, Here is the point you should never miss. Though April showers may come your way, They bring the flowers that bloom in May. So if it's raining, have no regrets, Because it isn't raining rain, you know, (It's raining violets,) And where you see clouds upon the hills, You soon will see crowds of daffodils, So keep on looking for a blue bird, And list'ning for his song, Whenever April showers come along. And where you see clouds upon the hills, You soon will see crowds of daffodils, So keep on looking for a blue bird, And list'ning for his song, Whenever April showers come along.

My Dad bought a Decca set of Al Jolson songs. My two favorite songs in the album were Rosie You Are My Posie. Heard it years later as background music in film Big Hand For The Little Lady starring Joanne Woodard. The next time I heard the begging of the song was when I watched a British show costaring the remarkable Anthony Valentine who was singing it to Rosie the secretary. And I suspect it's because my birthday's in May that I fell in love with April Showers. Now I want to make a comment about a scene in Downton Abby. There is a nightclub scene where the singer should have gotten the hook. He invested nothing of himself except that he was on key. Anyone whose heard Judy Garland,Bing Crosby,Dean Martin AND Al Jolson sing this song has to sing with gentle and soft emotion. I'll cut the actor some slack. There was evidently no one on the show to coach him and or they had probably never heard of the song.

There is absolutely no singer in today's world to compare to the great Al Jolson! What an incredibly beautiful voice he had! The late, great comedian George Burns told Johnny Carson on Carson's "The Tonight Show" that although Jolson wasn't the most talented entertainer, he was the greatest entertainer of all-time! Burns said that Jolson was a superb comedian but that audiences didn't appreciate his humor because his singing was so great!

On this day in 1948 {March 27th} the Warner Bros. musical movie ' April Showers' opened in theaters across the U.S.A., and the song was featured in the movie... According to Wikipedia, Spike Jones & Doodles Weaver produced a parody of "April Showers" which began with the lyrics 'When April showers, she never closes the curtain' {and I wish it were on You Tube}...

You can find that section of the song online. The line is frenzied and kinda spoken cuz it doesn't fit the meter or the rhyme scheme. I'm a Spike Jones fan, but this is not one of his best. He's used this random association gag in plenty of other songs, and this one seems tired and not very clever.

AnEnglishBean Now isn't that a smart comment, but Al's alive in his music. Though Al was American, and a singer; guess you'd probably say the same about the great English Band leaders Harry Roy, Ray Noble or Ambrose. When I put on a record/CD of someone &/or their orch. long dead, they come to life in their recordings. You do know of your fellow countrymen: Harry Roy, Ambrose, and Ray Noble? Great music, if you don't think so, why are you listening to this video?

jeff Craven I know of them but I see them as dead and hteir music remains.

I'm American of British heritage, raised on American jazz, pre-swing & swing. When I heard some of the English bands from the 30's and 40's it opened up almost like a parallel universe of the kind of music I love most of all. My girlfriend says I listen to dead peoples' music, but to me, when I hear beautiful tunes, bounding with creativity and energy; yes, we know they're dead but such recordings seem to bring these cats back to like, if only for a few minutes. I played in a couple rock bands 30+ years ago, but today if I'm subjected to rock, I react to it like a vampire to Holy Water. I hate the new hip hop, or whatever the current trend is called. Give me the pop and jazz music of people born in the late 19th century up thru the late 20's anytime.
