I fitted the Mana bar risers to my 2013 Tuono and later switched them to my 2016 Tuono. With a bit of jiggling the master cylinder and brake hose route, I avoided having to get a new hose.

I have done Headlight mod Hot start mod Spark plugs Removed the cables Need to do the dash but that is next. Thanks so much for your help. From down under! Oh also fitted a lithium battery which also helped the start issues.

Thank you so much! I just resolved the hot-start issue using your piggy back wire idea (from the battery to the solenoid). I was so frustrated with the hot-start issue I was going to get rid of the bike....thanks again!

Thank you.. I have since reconnected the exhaust flap cables and renewed one of them which was sticking. I am currently doing a video on this but the bike definitely runs far better with them connected . As for the seat. Before you buy a new one. You need to go to your Aprilia dealer and sit on the latest models because the 1100 has two variants. The factory 1100 is a bit thinner and therefore less legroom than the 1100R

Thank you for the video! I just purchased a 2012 Tuono and am going through the modification phase. The seat and belly pan are next since I too purchased the RSV4 Tail and a new exhaust.

Great bike... I absolutely love mine. Since I created this video I have put the exhaust flap cables back. I found that the lower revs and speeds throttle response was not quite right. Basically the flap is designed to open at 6000rpm allowing large header design for top end power but a more smoother engine response at lower RPMs. It's basically an EXUP system.

Fantastic video! I'm at the research stage of my eventual bike buying process (you know the stage where you watch all the videos, read all the reviews and generally spend most of your time at work) and I really enjoyed this. It gave me so much insight! I am still toying on whether to buy an early tuono (there is a bumblebee co loured one for sale with only 3'000km for 7k GBP) or whether to hold out and save for another year and splash out on a 2017 Tuono Factory for around 5k more. On one side, I would be more comfortable riding the bike around town and I wouldn't get stung on depreciation quite as much but would forgo all the little upgrades they did to the model over the years (blipper, cruise control, bigger fuel tank etc etc). I think your video edges me to go for the newer bike! On another note, I would love to have a link for your tail unit !

They are just the best bikes to ride too. I have put on Bridgestones S21s (a 200mm rear which is an option from the 190mm) and the bike handles even better now.. (on the road). One other thing to look out for when buying an early RSV4 or Tuono V4 is the engine number.. You need a number above about 3500 but I'm not too sure, my bike is in the 12 thousands so no worries and I think it affects the RSV4 more. The potential problem is with a nut on the crank which can come loose. After about 3500 the nut was made as part of the crank. Cam chain rattle from the RHS is a feature just after starting the bike, especially when hot. It soon goes away and is attributed to the hydraulic chain tensioner emptying when the engine is shut off.

I wouldn't buy the 1100 Tuono unless you went to the latest colour display.. For my money I would go for the 2014/15 1000cc Tuono bigger tank and the model range included the RSV4 tail unit version as standard. There are a couple of factory call backs on previous models, mine had to have a water manifold change... Also some very early models (mainly RSV4s but some Tuonos) had a problem with the crank shaft cam chain drive sprocket coming loose.. Other considerations for not buying earlier model than the 2014 are: cam chain rattle on startup (Not a problem but doesn't sound good especially in-front of your mates). Difficulty selecting neutral at a standstill especially from first gear. Stators burning out on some earlier models. Overall I absolutely love mine and don't plan to part with it any time soon..

@@relph3 actually I ended up buying a 2012 Tuono v4r in bumble Bee colour too! Got an absolute bargain on it paid £4800 for it. Few issues I've had is the hot starting issue, impossible to get neutral and jumping out of 5/6th, apparently the injector was not working properly and it seems like I'm getting condensation in the air box. None of these issues have stopped me from enjoying over 3000 miles on it in 6 months. Fantastic bike!

@@riderread1750 I bought it with 13'000 miles on the clock and now it has almost 19'000. So high mileage, but has proven very reliable. I had to put a new clutch in and the basket is getting rather loud. Apart from that, fantastic purchase, very happy. Can't wait to go to the b500 again.

Sorry to learn you are not happy with the steering of your bike. I still own my bike and, apart from the steering stop to stop not being the most generous, the steering works very well as does the handling of the whole bike. There are loads of things to check on your bike before chucking the towel on it i.e. Head bearings, Tyre (pressure, wear, type), suspension setup, etc, etc. Also, see if you can get a go on another Tuono of similar model for comparison. I did not like the seating position of my bike when I first bought it so I changed the seat to the later 1100 model. Good luck and keep me posted.

Hi mate, love the video. I've got a 13 in the same colour as you. I've found my headlights are very dusty and the lense itself has no sealant around it whatsoever. I don't suppose you had a video of you doing it or links to where the rubber plugs and sealant is from? Rather not spend £600 on a new headlight

Great video and very detailed. Did the hot start mod hold up well? I noticed mine does that as well and it drains the battery real fast when it's slow cranking. Also another question, on an rsv4 factory with no track days, any advantage to going with a rosso 3 as opposed to angel gt? Thanks

The hot start mod definitely works better than not doing it but the engine still turns over a bit slower than starting when cold. I notice this more when fueling up because now I'm not pushing the bike away from the pump (allowing the vehicle behind to move up to the pump) before trying to start the bike. As for the tyres, When I bought my bike it had Michelin Pilot Road 4s fitted. Not good. I decided to try the Bridgestone S21s also opting for a 200 rear. This choice has been so good on my Tuono for my local UK roads and the bike now gives me so much more handling confidence than any previous tyres I've used. I can't give an opinion on the rosso 3 as opposed to angel gt because I've not used them..

good vid and nice work. I prefer the overall look with the smaller tank. And it took a while to get used to the side stand or should i say trust it. But no issues so far.

Hey! Good video, i got a Tuono V4r 2011 (non aprc) with stock exhaust, but i would like to put some aftermarket one. I have read that it might need race map, otherwise it might run too lean. Do u suggest that?

I haven't gone down the route of race map etc. Since I made this video I have reinstated the exhaust flap cables. I bought the bike second hand (about 3 years old) and after discovering the flap cables were sticking I took them off (as I said in the video) and didn't find any difference. But after getting to know the bikes characteristics over a few more months it became apparent the engine didn't deliver the power as I would expect at lower rev ranges.. So I bought new exhaust flap cables, checked everything was working as it should and the bike now feels more responsive at the lower rev ranges.. I also temporarily put the stock exhaust can back on with the new cables because I thought I needed to go back to a known baseline as a starting point.. After about 500miles of road riding and trying all the various modes etc. I found the R mode to work very well on the roads where I live and the T mode a bit snatchy on the throttle unless I was riding (lets just say) more enthusiastically . S mode doesn't seem to be a compromise for the roads where I ride so It's either R or out and out raw T mode for me. Anyway (back to the point) I have put my thunder-slash end can back on with the working flap cables and all is great now, I can't tell the difference for the power delivery to the stock can.. Obviously I can hear the difference it sounds awesome!!!

@@ttarmo If I where you, get to know your bike well in standard trim except maybe an end can.. Because in my experience, you then have a bench mark to work from.. They are great bikes and for me the Tounos upright riding position is great for the type of roads I ride round Cheshire and Wales.. One option I am please I went for is Bridgestone S21s with a 200 rear tyre (The standard is 190). This transformed the handling and I feel far more confident overall riding than I did with the Michelin pilot road 4s which were fitted when I bought the bike..

Yeah it is as simple as that.. Tank off reveals the ECU on top of the air box which needs to be moved to get the air box lid off. Unbolt the air-box base and move/unplug wires to be able to lift the base away. It ends up looking bit of a spaghetti junction getting to the coil packs, but everything has its place so there is no chance of reconnecting stuff wrongly.. Make sure you have a good quality plug socket which the rubber insert which will hold the top of the plug whilst screwing it in or out.. Oh and be careful on re tightening new plugs into the soft alloy heads. I tend to screw the new plugs in by hand with a dab of copper slip on the threads until I feel they are tight onto the crush washer, then give only 1/4 turn with the wrench to crush the washer.

Hi Derek, great vid. I have had my 2011 bike since new and I cant even remember half the mods I have done to it! Do you ever visit Tuonoworld? Its a very friendly site and it would be fab to PM you and show you some pics of my bike. Are you in the Hull area? I’m originally from that neck of the woods and we are currently staying in Burythorpe as now on the North tip of Scotland. UKM.

Yes I still have the bike. No real major issues other than what I've listed in the video. I maintain my bike myself and I do fined the Tuono requiring my attention more than most of my other bikes. 2019 required exhaust flap cables, clutch cable and a new battery. Some of the mods and issues I have done/had on my Tuono Since I bought my 2012 model in March 2016 1 Sealed Headlights modified to allow to clean inside. They dirt up really badly. The projector lenses come loose. 2 Speedo/rev counter mists up 3 Seat on 2011, 12 and 13 are really uncomfortable I now use the later 1100 Factory seat. All models are interchangeable 4 The starter motor will need a wiring upgrade from Battery to starter. Known fault but it is better to also change the battery for new even if the existing still seems good. 5 ReCall by Aprilia for a water manifold which has been failing on some bikes. To check if the recall has been done call the Aprilia Dealer and check if your bikes manifold has a yellow paint dot on it.. I my case the hose clips attaching the replaced manifold had been changed to jubilee clips.. 6 The cam chain hydraulic tensioner sometimes empties itself when the bike is stopped and restarted with a hot engine which causes cam chain rattle for a short while, There is a mod which entails putting a none metallic washer under the hydraulic tentioners but it is an engine apart job. I do get this cam chain rattle issue from time to time but since using Shell Ultra Fully synthetic oil it doesn't seem to happen as often. 7 The bike sometimes misfires/briefly cuts at 3000 to 4000 very briefly if using the clutch to change gear. I believe it is something to do with the quickshift engine cut because, although you are supposed to use the clutch at 3000rpm and below, it seem to confuse the system at about 3000 to 4000 rpm sometimes. 8 Difficulty selecting neutral at a standstill especially from first gear. This is a real issue which can be a real pain at times. In basic terms the clutch plates drag even when the clutch lever is pulled fully in. To alleviate this, make sure the clutch cable is at the point of being almost adjusted too tight and change the oil regularly. I found using the Shell Ultra Fully Synthetic works well. 9 Stators burning out on some models. This I put down to end of life of the battery putting heavier loads onto the electrical system, it has not happened to my bike. I also have read there was a later version of the stator used after a certain engine or vin number but I don't know any more details. 10 Underbelly fairing plastic bracket breaks. 11 The exhaust flap cables will almost certainly stiffen up if they are not lubricated regularly. Do not remove them if you don't know anything about tuning because in my experience the flap works well even with my Thunderslash end can fitted. 12 The a-PRC system (Aprilia Performance Ride Control) can switch itself off from time to time. Usually during acceleration at speed on long sweeping bends.. When it first happens, it seems a major issue because a warning light comes on and trying to switch the a-PRC system back on is unresponsive. However, switching off the bike by the ignition key and waiting no less than 2 to 3 minutes before switching the ignition back on will automatically reset the bike back to previously set a-PRC settings. 13 Using 'T' (Track Mode) for road riding at slower speeds makes the bike feel rough and snatchy on the throttle. I use 'R' (Road Mode) if cursing around for a smoother ride. I've not really used 'S' (Sport Mode) much. 14 LAUNCH CONTROL. Their a some misconceptions with this but basically when LAUNCH CONTROL is activated, the TRACTION CONTROL (1 to 8) and WHEELIE CONTROL (1 to 3) systems are deactivated and the max rpm is set to 9600.

@@relph3 thankyou for that rundown. Im looking at getting a 2011 model, its had 1 owner feom new it had the valves checked at 20,000ks and is now at 30,000ks. Its in absolute mint condition with the race ecu and nice pipe and ohlins rear shock and the front internals revalved. Ive always had gsxr's and still own a gsxr1000. Which are really reliable bikes and just wondering if this will be a good bike, im just abit over the head down ass up riding position and found the tuono still sporty while being more comphy. And the v4's sound absolutely AMAZING. I dunno what to do i really want to buy it, just abit hesitant i guess being that i dont have large amount of $$$ if something serious happens

​@@riderread1750 I was like you, I definitely wanted to experience a modern Hyper bike but also wanted to have a more upright riding position. The Aprilia Tuono V4 was, for me, a great option. I also own other bikes which I can rely on as my go to bikes for more general use, touring etc. The Riding experience of the Tuono is unlike anything I had ever previously experienced, especially after owning it for while and getting to know the characteristics of the bike. The handling confidence the bike gives is just fantastic (after changing the previous owners tyre choice from Michelin pilot road 3s to Bridgestone S21s). Personally I would want to buy the bike as Stock as possible and make any changes as and when I felt it required it.. Buying a none stock bike may not give you the correct benchmark feedback that you may want to be able to enjoy and learn what is an absolutely awesome bike experience.

I've not given the bike a good run yet. However after all the servicing and resetting everything, the bike does feel keen to go and responsive on the throttle. I do believe the type of plugs which I took out would have been detrimental to performance.

I've now been running the plugs for about 3 months, together with reconnecting the exhaust flap cables and replacing one of the cables, the bike is so much more responsive in all rev ranges.

Well yes and no.. You have to put the effort in to keep this sort of bike in top form and not doing the work yourself is extremely expensive. I consider most of what I've done to my bike is tailored to suit me.. If you have not ridden one of these bikes you will not know why owners love them so much..
