My name is April Lauren, I share bits of my story here on KZbin. I believe in living each day a little better, brighter than before. My husband and I just PCSed to Hawaii. Back in Summer of 2020 my weight reached 352.8. I lost just over 100 lbs in a slow sustainable way, however after my husband and I moved I spiraled into depression and regained a lot of that weight back. However, after a life of losing and regaining more than I lost. This time was different and I got help. Then I made some big life choices and now I am sharing this part.

I share in hopes of inspiring others to start, start working towards a healthier and happier life by taking ownership of where they are and where they are going. Quick fix solutions along with guilt and shame based marketing schemes lie. There is not one right way for everyone, but there is a right way for you and you worth doing the work to figure that out. I encourage all to seek guidance from medical professionals, dietitians, therapy and vetted fitness professional as needed.

Girl not many people can say they worked their asses off and lost 100lbs, you've shown you can do the work and have the ability, but you do not need to be a martyr for this. You do not need to spend your life fighting for this and weight loss surgery is a tool to improve your life!

My friend has a sleeve 3 months ago and so far all is going well. She was told that after the surgery she would need b12 injections for life and have to take certain vitamins. She was late on getting her first b12 shot and started getting deficiency symptoms which was shocking to me as it is still early on in her journey. Anyway, like I said, she is doing well and has lost a lot of weight so as long as there are no complications down the line, the surgery definitely has its benefits. On the other hand, it hasn’t stopped her eating junk food, but she is working on it and there are definite improvements. It’s worth mentioning that there are foods that are labelled ‘slider foods’ such as chips, (crisps UK) which are easy to over eat so she still needs to exercise control. My observation is this, if my friend wants to get to goal and remain there, she still needs to do some work. Surgery isn’t a fix all solution.

I am so freaking happy for you. I had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery over 15 years ago. I lost over 150 pounds, became a distance runner and an avid weight lifter. I had to completely change my lifestyle and eating habits, but I’ve kept it off and have built a lot of muscle. Everyone else I know that has had the surgery, has unfortunately gained all the weight back, plus some. However, I know that you can lose all the weight and keep it off. I’m so excited for you. You’re going to do amazing!

I got to my heaviest weight AFTER my gastric sleeve. I got up to 384 lbs. I got my act together, got a personal trainer and started eating super healthy. Now I've lost 180 lbs and still going! Don't rely on your surgery. You have to do your part for the rest of your life. Lifestyle change is the key to success.

April, I totally identify with your journey. I suffer from depression and will likely take meds for the rest of my life, but therapy and understanding the why's, challenging your negative thoughts, knowing your pattern and getting tools to help you break out of the cycle are all really important pieces to unlock to contribute to your success. I am also someone who never wanted surgery, but am seriously considering it since I am speeding towards 50 years old but am in worse shape physically than my 80 year old parents. I want a better quality of life from here on out and I wish that for you too. Your past dedication proves you can do this! But please, continue to explore your mental health as way to take care of yourself and staying healthy.

I had my DS 2009. I lost & have maintained my over 200lb weight loss. It’s a big & powerful surgery. It’s the Cadillac of wls. I’ve had many struggles. I had years of battling malnutrition. I had years of chronic illnesses where my intestines would block off. I’ve had two revisions to my original surgery to increase my common channel for more absorption to keep my weight and nutrients. I think it’s an amazing surgery but it requires dedication and commitment to following your plan and getting vital nutrients. I think wish you the absolute best with your new DS!

You’re welcome April. If you ever have a question, I’d be happy to help. I have one warning, medical professionals, for the most part, will not quite understand your surgery. Keep a copy of a diagram in your purse with your surgeons info. I just recently had this experience with a gastroenterologist 🙄 I was set up for a colonoscopy and mentioned during consultation that there’s a portion of my intestines they cannot see with that test. Completely ignored. I had the test and during the time he met with my husband and I to give results, My husband mentioned my common channel again and you could finally see it CLICK- ohhhhhh, and he immediately said I’d need a different test ordered called a bowel series. Trust me, you will encounter this with all types of professionals and you have to advocate for yourself. Anyway, so PROUD of you! 👍🏻 let’s rock this DS!

Good luck with your journey. I had a RNY 20 years ago and lost 170 lbs (300 to 130) I kept it off for about 10 years until slowly weight started to creep back on (about 70 ) The thing is once I decided to get back to my post-op diet and habits that weight also came off. Like you said it is a tool! I would also like to thank you because your channel actually help me get back to those habits.

Oh April I'm so happy to see you're back! The clip you filmed right before your surgery made me tear up. You're so brave and I'm so so proud of you. Weight gain is such a complex thing and it's so frustrating sometimes trying to fight it on your own. The society wants to reduce it down to "just eat less and move more" but it's never quite as simple as that, is it. Asking for help is so important and should be normalized! Thank you for sharing your journey and lots of love ❤

Yep, even the most famous of her "just eat less, move more" naysayers can't fake that not all calories are the same. They pretty much do keto. So fine, say you follow keto and good for you. But don't pretend that everyone who's not losing weight isn't losing it bc of eating too much.

I know there will be weirdos out there who tell you that you took the easy way out. Don’t listen to that crap bc they haven’t been there. Those of us who have had WLS know it’s so much work. I had the lap band 11 years ago and lost 150 lbs. I got comfortable and eventually gained 100 back. I’ve since lost that 100 plus 10 lbs. I’ve got 45 lbs to go and it’s hard work especially as you get smaller. For the first time in my life I enjoy exercising and feel so much stronger. Do you think you’ll ever get back to hiking and running? Also, your husband seems great. It’s so important to have a supportive spouse.

Congratulations for doing what's best for you. People will tell you that you will gain the weight back and it's not true, if you use it the way you're supposed to. I got weight loss surgery almost 8 years ago. Last year I gained 30lbs and I've lost about 25 of them, easily. My suggestion is to focus on your diet so you can form your new lifestyle. Keep your food to single ingredient things, don't try and find ways to have your favorite things, at least not at first. Keep it very simple, give yourself a year. After the year then have what you want in moderation. Moderation we are talking bi monthly and monthly NOT WEEKLY OR DAILY. You can do this

April, I had to comment after I heard you say that you keep failing. Everyone will agree that you are no failure, in fact you have been an inspiration to many people. I am lucky that I have never had over thirty pounds to lose but I know how hard that is for me. And I know it isn't just eating and exercising right, if it was, well girl you would be at your goal a long time ago. The body is a complication machine, and we are daily enticed with food and drink,, and it's so F ing unfair that we can't at least eat what we want without gaining weight. Anyway, I have watched your channel because I saw a strong, determined woman with the sweetest personality and cheered for her. It doesn't matter how you achieve your weight loss as long as it is healthy, and I am pulling for you.

I admire your courageousness. My prayer for you was always to get treatment for these two issues and seeing the medical value in seeking help for these things. Because you always had the ability and drive to commit to exercise routines, I knew you would be a perfect candidate for surgery. You will be amazed at the changes in the next year. I know you will be successful. If I could give you any advice, make sure you find and stay in counseling during this time period. Sometimes the most profound discoveries during this weight loss process of bariatric surgery is in our mental health. You will gain a confidence but also discover some much needed areas of challenging old assumptions. I think the number one aspect of failing this surgery is in not addressing the psychological aspects of it. Enjoy this journey! (and remember in the beginning...the first 6-8 months are the toughest when you are so limited by dietary restrictions and meal sizes) In a year, you will be at an amazing place. Again, I wish you much success!

I saw you at a restaurant in Hawaii and I wanted so badly to say hi, but I wasn’t sure if that would’ve felt like an invasion of privacy. I think I might have stared a little too hard. If I could’ve said something in that moment, it would have just been that I love you and you’re amazing! I fell in love with your KZbin channel because of the essence of ~you~. You are an incredible person. We are here for ~you~. We support you in your journey. Every part of it.

OH my goodness, I would have loved for you to say hi! Do you live here or were you just visiting? What restaurant? I've only met a couple people over the years, but it always feels like I am catching up or talking story with a friend! Sending lots of love!

I had gastric bypass a year and a half ago. Im down 120 lbs and it was literally the best decision of my life!!!!! Keep going! You were doing the right things before your body just wasnt in it with you. You know your body better than anyone. You made the decisions that were best for you!!!!! Keep doing it for YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had lost the weight and gained it back multiple times . I had the will and the dedication every time but my body was not on board. I was tired of being so hungry and still not seeing the results i wanted regardless of how many options i tried. But this surgery has allowed me to lose weight and live my life in a way that i can enjoy things without thinking about my weight. I understand you 100%

So glad to see you back! And good for you for getting help in treating your mental health first! I had WLS (bypass) over a year ago and working with a therapist for years before during and after has been so critical to success. I wish you all the success in your journey! WLS is a fantastic tool

Lovely to see you April. I, like lots of folks have thought of you and hoped you were managing OK. My last move led to a complete breakdown and my worst depressive episode. 3 years later I finally feel able to move again for work. Just to say that being depressed when your world is moving in a direction against your will is completely natural. Glad to see you getting back to yourself.

I am doing EFT now and the psychological component of food, eating, self care, trauma is huge. Feeling a great sense if release and relief. You are such a warrior. Get all the care and support you need. You know you are worth it. I am here to say the emotional work is worth it.

Oh Honey, I just clicked on one of your videos for the first time and I’m so happy you hare getting your depression treated! I’ve been on Prozac for 30 years…I’ll never stop because life is too short to suffer! We added Wellbutrin several years ago and for me that was the perfect cocktail. Our brains have a chemical imbalance, just like a person with diabetes has an imbalance of insulin. Physical and mental health are just HEALTH! I want to give you a hug and tell you it gets better!
