This is my one week post up update after weight loss surgery. (I had the duodenal switch.) Last week I shared that I had gotten weight loss surgery, and some footage from my time in the hospital.

Quick fix solutions along with guilt and shame based marketing schemes lie. There is not one right way for everyone, but there is a right way for you and you worth doing the work to figure that out. I encourage all to seek guidance from medical professionals, dietitians, therapy and vetted fitness professional as needed.

I am a Retired Bariatric Nurse from Iowa. I am so happy for you. I also fight depression and fight a mental battle over food. You will lose weight, but your mind will tell you different. I'm not going to lie, you will struggle but you have a Bariatric Team for support and I encourage you to use them. You got this!! Please keep us updated as you can.

In order to lose the weight fir good you must get right in your mind. I have a friend had this procedure and 5 years later, still eating fast food, not excersing and still obese. This helps jumps start your success, but you have to be right in your mind for long-term results. ❤

Totally agree. I have seen patients who did bariatric surgery but didnt address their depresión or prepare themselves for the after surgery. The surgery is not only a medical fix but there must be a team - behavioural therapist, dietitian, physiotherapist etc so much goes into preparing somoeone before and after.

You got this April. I got gastobypass back in 2004 and I was 389 at my highest. I’m now just under 200 lbs and need much of the rest removed with surgery. But that’s not where my mind is right now. You’re going to see the weight slough off. If you ever need to talk, don’t hesitate to inbox me. Smile and keep your head up. Save your tears for later years. Good things are coming your way. You’re such a beautiful person. Much love and many prayers to you. ❤️🙏

Aloha Lauren , Welcome to Hawaii, I wondered what happened to you, I’m sorry that you are struggling…In 2016 i made a decision to do surgery to remove 90% of my stomach. My weight went all the way 360lbs after years of yo-yo dieting and binge eating. Surgery was a choice I made because I was at my bottom’s end, it was very drastic but I needed help to get weight off because nothing else was helping. It’s a journey with bumpy roads ahead, it’s a process and keep reminding yourself «You chose this road to help you feel better inside and out, don’t ever look back, believe in the process and make it work for YOU!! By doing this you will learn how to help and discover more about yourself :) I’m routing for you!! You Got This Girl 😊

I had gastric bypass 3 years ago. Life has been amazing. I started at 235 lb- at 5’3 that made me morbidly obese. I got down to 138 and now am 148. I try to stay in the 140-150 range. I also struggle with anxiety and depression. Wellbutrin has changed my life in that regard. The tools are out there for us to use so no shame in using them. We only have one life to live so do all you can do make it the best!

Girl - nothing changes the hard work and dedication you put in to lose the weight you lost. You got to see how strong you are. Life and the human body can be tricky, challenging, and differ from one person to the other (even our own body can change from one year to another). You made the best decision for your life and health. Keep pushing. Trust me I KNOW.

Lovey, don't be so hard on yourself. I lost 110 pounds, found out I had celiac disease, and as my body was healing, I put back on 70 pounds. I'm now on mounjaro, as surgery isn't really an option for me and it's a game changer. Ozempic didn't work for me. I was hungry more on ozempic and started gaining on ozempic. Mounjaro is the only thing that triggers my full button. You are still an inspiration. I love your videos. I am glad you are back. It's hard to put yourself out there because people can be horrible. All of this to say, you did what was best for you. Getting help with weight loss should be considered as a positive thing. I am a firm believer in doing what is best for you. Tools are out there to be used. Use them. ❤ I have depression and severe anxiety. I have been to those mental places you've been. I hope this finds you as an encouragement. You've got this girly!!! I do hope you feel better soon. It took doctors 30 years to figure out that I had celiac. 30 years of intestie and digestive issues. ❤❤

Dear Lauren ,Just wanted to say thank you for making this video especially as it was so difficult for you,5 times, and yet you didn’t give up. That determination has given you the strength to pick yourself up, even though you were feeling so very low ,and got you to this point of moving forward and it will carry you on to succeed with your weight loss, goals am sure .I have witnessed the crushing effects of depression in my husband and my respect for you grows with each video .Whilst the depression was telling you No you ignored it picked yourself up and did something about the situation- that takes so much strength- I hope one day you’ll look back and thank yourself - I am so excited to see peace and contentment return to your life as your mental and physical health improves -I know I’m not the only one cheering you on . Much love from Southampton,England x😊😊

Welcome back Lauren. Thank you for being honest. It encourages everyone. Cheering you on to the finish line! You got this NO MATTER WHAT! I’ve had a food addiction (for several reasons). Through MUCH prayer I have prayed for self control. God is helping me day by day. Aug 5 will be 2 years I’ve started my journey. Starting weight was 281 and current is 158.4. Mental health is a battle for many folks including myself. The mind is a playground for the devil but we have victory through Jesus. Praying for you! So glad you’re back! ❤❤

One of your comments really struck home with me. When I quit drinking (seven years ago in a few days!) I felt enslaved to thoughts about drinking as you say about your thoughts about food. You can be addicted to food (think sugar for instance) but the problem with food addiction is you literally can’t live without it. It’s quite the dilemma.

Welcome back. I have lifelong depression that waxes and wanes, even with therapy and medication. I treat it as a health condition as any other and just focus on management of it and acceptance of myself, not curing anything. I get down on myself sometimes so I will tell you what I would want to hear from others which is that you are going to be okay but its alright if you don't feel that way right now. You are loved and supported. As for body image, I've been listening to a podcast called Maintenance Phase which debunks or explores a lot of health claims and diets. It's really helped me to love my body and filter out a lot of cultural noise around bodies that wasn't healthy for me. Love you girl!

I don't know if this will be the same for you, but I very distinctly recall around 2 or 3 months post-op, I gained a lot of mental clarity when the "food noise" was eliminated. It really helped me focus on the mental healing I needed to do, even though I had been working on it for years. I did not realize how much of a distraction my constant food thoughts were in my day-to-day. It actually made tackling my depression/BED more focused (note that I did not say "easier" bc it's still hard work). You're doing great, be patient through the healing phase! 💖💖💖

If it is any consolation, it takes most people a long time to decide to get bariatric surgery. The duodenal switch and modified ds have the best success rate in terms of surgical treatment of obesity. Just make sure you follow your doctor's recommendations and vitamins.

So much to say here, but at the end of the day, you didn't fail. You exercises and strengthened your heart, body and mind. You learned so much about food and nutrition and that will help you in this journey. Look at the celebrities who's whole job it is to "look good" and they struggle too! With all the money and resources, they still struggle. You have done so well and even when you were down, you weren't out ❤️ keep that, never quit, attitude.

I had my Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) three months ago (to the day). I remember sleeping for two days straight...only getting up to use the bathroom. I lost 20lbs in the first two weeks, which was shocking to me too! You're doing fantastic, April! I feel like I have been on the same journey as you, especially with trying to start a family and dealing with mental health and physical/medical issues that make it hard all around.

You took control and you’re on your way. Also don’t be to obsessive about the scale at the beginning like the first couple weeks especially. Because there will be stalls that will correct themselves. So don’t be hard on yourself. I didn’t lose hardly anything the first two weeks due to water retention, swelling and gas and if that happens it’s normal. You got this!
@AprilLauren

That's what I was expecting after surgery. I hear that a lot of people don't lose right after because of all the swelling and things, and then like you said it "corrects itself." I really like that phrasing you used a lot! Thank you for the encouragement!! 💜💜💜💜

I can relate with so much of what you say. Working on living in the moment, struggling with mental hunger, dealing with food and so on. Not easy.

I'm so glad you did this. It might give you some space to deal with your mental health by taking some of the food element out. So hard to work on what's going OK in your head when it is so tied up with weight body image and food.

I didn't know you had a job outside the home prior to surgery. Could we hear more about that? When you're ready. Great job getting these two videos up so soon after surgery. Speedy recovery!

Congratulations! Keep a VERY close eye on your recovery, and watch out for anemia. My mom got the same surgery and ended up going into a mental hospital before they realized she was actually anemic. Because you already have depression this is especially important. I'm proud of you, keep fighting.

we all need help and surgery is a solution. please remember, you can put the weight back on. seen so many people do it. Develop a healthy relationship with food and you’ll do fine. best of luck

I'm also allergic to steri-strips. I kept reacting even through benadryl, ended up needing to take a Prednisone pack. Sharing in case that helps with your situation. Best of luck! You've got this! So proud of you coming back and talking about your depression. I also withdraw as a coping mechanism for MDD so I know how hard that is.

I have read that this kind of surgery shows a long=term improvement in health and weight reduction. The health benefits show this can be a great support for one's overall well-being. You are helping many people with your health/weight-loss journey. Thanks for all you do.

I haven't watched the full video yet, but I just wanted to say that I'm so happy for you. It's heart-breaking how much you had to suffer not only with weight but with mental health as well, but now it's getting better. I really wish you the best recovery, but mentally and physically and hope that you are able to heal and get stronger through that.
