This grand is wanting swing for grands when they visit; however, during the cooler temps in a month or two, planning for winter garden. With the removal of the swing, the frame can be a huge cold frame with transparent tarp to extend the growing season. By summer it gets used again by the grands! Thank you for the plans. Even the cup holders can be tool storage. In the winter garden shed! Very creative!

Great video and very nice looking frame. One suggestion I would have is to ship lap the top support on the inside. Currently the racking force is trying to pushout on the lap joint and only the screws are resisting the force. If it were ship lap on the inside the racking force would push the horizontal member into the joint, not out.

I've found that, instead of using screw-type eyelets, and trusting the threads to carry a load, I feel safer drilling through the beam and using a welded eyebolt with a washer and nylock nut or two nuts jammed together. Especially over time, much less chance of the wood fibers holding screw threads getting stripped. Just my experience.

Those who live in wetter climates be sure to put your fastners through the underside of joints, so moisture drains naturally. The screw holes collect water and will rot out, even pressure treated lumber pretty quickly, especially if you get freezing temps.

If you used screw eyes to fasten to the top rail I would suggest through drilling and using eye bolts with washers and nuts as they would be a lot more secure. the topcap could be marked and routed to conceal the bolts (and protect them from weather)

A coat of paint on exposed grain ends will about double the life of outdoor wood. Especially: grain ends that are butted to another piece of wood. Painting after assembly will not penetrate the joints, but water will, and it will stay to help the progression of rot. All the braces to my pergolas and gazebo had to be replaced after about 6 years (coming completely apart). Three coats on the ends now!

There might be two thoughts on this. One if the ground is not level where it sits water run off will and take care of itself. The other is to add some sealer on the top. Adding a bevel would be for a good idea if the swing would be sitting on a level surface. All IMO.

1/4", maybe 5/16" eye screws into soft cedar holding that swing up? Not for long. Through-bolt that or you're going down.

Does either this "A" Frame Style or the Covered Frame Style have any stability advantages over the other? Do either feel a little tipsy when swinging aggressively? I like both designs, but only need one...lol. Thanks April! Have a Great Day!!!

The biggest issue is that the A frame legs are mainly in compression. The single vertical beam is in compression but stability wise it is torqued forward and backwards and is only as stable as the bottom angle brackets. An A frame would be more stable because the legs are only in compression mode with no torque. As you swing, the compression will become greater and lessor, but will remain in compression. An A frame would also be more stable because the center of gravity would have to exceed the angles of the down legs. The single vertical beam has a bottom plate that that would have to be as long as the spacing of the A frame feet so that the center of gravity would also have to exceed the same angle to tip over.

Florin Jurcovici the bending action on the beam is applying a torque at the base. A torque wrench is applying its bending force to torque the bolt. I believe the concept is understood with my explanation.

@@scottmoore598 Not really. There's a ring around the nut or the screw head when you use a wrench. There's no such thing here. In your example, what's subject to torsion is the screw. The screw is missing in any of the constructions presented in the clip. For torsion to occur, you need something that resists being rotated around its own axis. Like the crankshaft in a car - the cranks from the pistons try to rotate it, the wheels cause it to resist rotation. In your example, the element resisting rotation is the screw. It's all bending and stretching and compressing in the two designs presented in the clip, without any twisting. Reason I insist on this is that different materials - especially wood - behave differently to various kinds of load.

Nice! Finally outdoor projects with half laps and closer to my favorite timber framing! Love it!!! I’d love to see you come up with a modern aesthetic approach to this very concept but instead of A frames with a modern approach to it 🤟🏽 like an H frame or what you see with moderns style homes. Quick question, this is the area I struggle with with any chair or leg involved project and that is how to square the length of your project’s legs? How to ensure each leg is identical in length to the other without only relying on measurements as I feel there’s always too much that can go wrong when relying on strictly measuring and numbers... I’m also number dyslexic and eventually I figure it out after waisting too much time rechecking my numbers when I’m there are easier, more precise ways of getting a square set of legs

Utilizing a stop block system when cutting them out is a good way to ensure they are identical lengths. Then the measurement doesn't have to be perfect on the 1st one because the rest of the legs will be identical to the 1st one. Who cares if you're off by a 32nd of an inch on the 1st one when all of the legs will be exactly the same, which will guarantee the level and squareness you've asked about.
