It’s funny people mention feeling nostalgic for memories they’ve never had, or homesickness for a home that doesn’t exist. Ghibli’s films often revolve around the interconnection between our world and the spiritual world. The music makes us, as viewers, more immersed in the content of the film. But where there is no film and just music, we get these crazy indescribable feelings. Maybe music is a partial insight into what lies beyond this world and is why we feel so strongly when we hear these songs

I mean, while listening through, it sounds almost like an epic journey, like, Homer-style. But, what I find interesting is that I find myself hearing old folk songs laced into, giving it these distant home vibes that are hard to get from something new. The music itself is trying to find it's way back home.

a poem based on the song: a field with flowers of stardust and sea, she picked one with the most delicate of tugs, and her lips turned upward lost and found in magic. eyes green as seafoam she looked at me and extended her hand. I enveloped her in a hug of stolen light. the sky darkened and opened up, as we danced together in tranquility, to the music of the sky shedding its tears. and by the time it stopped crying, I disappeared into the sweet light of dawn. until tomorrow, my love.

When I listen to this cover of this song, I feel like I belong somewhere else. Like a carnival surrounded by crowds and crowds of happy and peaceful people. I feel like I belong as a clown or happy attendee, running and laughing, going on the rides like a merry go round. The carnival is peaceful. There aren’t super modern rides, just old fashioned carnival games and rides, throw the ball in the clowns mouth, shooting games, all that sort of stuff. The sky is a light blue, red, orange and pink creeping up from the horizon. The sun setting and everyone continuing to play. It shifts into a ballroom, everyone dancing and making memories. The last thing I hear before coming back to where I am as of writing this. “Welcome home, we missed you.”

I miss how things used to be. My old class and my friendships that I've spend years to hold together, it all disappears right in front of me. It takes years to make something beautiful but a few seconds for everything to come crumbling down. I forgot I had these emotions, for some reason, this made me just silently cry while remembering the good times we had together. Nothing will ever be the same and I'll never find anyone as real as you. Such nostalgia

I did not write this, General Jaydonius did, who is an amazing lyricist. Here is his lyrics to this song After enjoying this song for many years, I've decided to write some lyrics that hopefully catches the meaning and purpose behind the song. You're welcome to change it to suit your own meaning, and maybe finish the rest of it off, but I tend to get so caught up in the harmony it would probably be rude to sing at all. [Starts at 0:19] Will you enjoy, the merry go round? Do you respect, its ups and its downs? As it moves slowly, your soul still lowly, can, you bring back your joy to your heart? (Joy to your heart?) Come and enjoy, our merry go round Never is lost, but needs to be found You'll understand that as it moves like a clock, It's meaning is yours to unlock. Come with and sing, its riddle that's told Your mind is young, but spirit is old. The people dancing, children are prancing, as they sing to the songs of our lives. It's never is shared, or sung as a praise, but all just know of its name. The song that's called life that is sweet and profound, but then, just went as it came. Oh why, strip us of our friends? (Bitterly, bitterly...) Why, give us bitter ends? But the merry go round just still happily goes on, spinning, like hands, of time. (No purpose, reason, or rhyme!) Come and enjoy, the merry go round Never is lost, but just needs to be found Hear cheer and laughter, tales of never after, but it's lights will still shine through the dark. (I both cannot make anymore lyrics, and just love the song to much to put my thoughts over it by this point, and just let it sweep me off my feet, I hope you enjoy it, if you found this in the ocean of comments.)

This theme gives me feelings of longing, wistfulness but joy as well. It marks the end of one chapter, but a beginning of another at once, and the feelings of sadness and happiness that come along with it. But it also feels youthful, adventurous, and playful. In this song I am taken out of the comfort of my normal life, and swept into a fantasy one filled with things no one could ever imagine. It is a whirlwind, it is curiously amusing, and I love it.

honestly, reading peoples own interpretations of this song is my favorite thing in the world. everyones interpretations are equally unique and special to them as individuals, which truly makes me believe in the beauty and power of this piece of music. really, this song is beautiful it might make me cry. if anyone was curious, personally, if I had to describe this song as one thing, it would be the feeling of Love. And no, im not talking about the image of ball dancing with a special someone (that would be amazing though), im talking about the image of being alone in a special place. lost in the middle of a vast flower field or grassy plain with nothing near me but the sky and myself. that image, to me at least, is what Love feels like. to feel at home and somewhat whimsical at the same time as you stare endless horizons of clouds, grass and flowers as far as the eye can see. to me, thats what this song feels like.

I feel almost the same. Having a endless grassy field to run in forever and do whatever you feel like whenever you want to. I feel a sense of loneliness aswell as if someone is missing like my best friend but a special someone (if you know what I mean) doesn't feel right either for some reason. I'm a musician so if I could also have all the instruments in the world to practice and learn forever, that to me... would be my special place to stay forever. I hope that this dream could come true for my one day and I can find the missing someone in the incomplete painting soon.

To reference a sort of feeling I had. The Yuri on Ice Ost (from YOI) in my opinion told a strong story that I somehow felt like I was able to connect with but not entirely (it's hard to explain). Where there was a high point in your life aswell as a down. There was so much build up and suddenly you lost everything but in the end, something or someone found you to keep you afloat above the grand ocean... but you don't know what. Like mystery where at the end was nearly solved, it was at your fingertips but you could never quit reach it.

All the comments and the music make me remember why I love music so much, it can just cause these raw unexplainable emotions,,,, as someone else in the comments mentioned, it also makes me miss dance even if it's just aimlessly moving around my room,,,, i love how it sparks creativity in others in a poem or in a drawing, in a choreography or in a cover of the song! music sure is medicine for the soul, especially when we find a piece that, without a single word, makes us feel, sometimes wanted or unwanted, but necessary, emotions.

Songs like this one have gently pushed me to create wonderful cities and towns for my fantasy stories. I might never finish writing them, but somehow those places have become a mental palace in my mind, with all my characters, the people around them, the sounds of the town, the smells, how the light reflects on everything... I think I would cry if I ever got to be in those places. How to explain that I miss a home that doesn't exit anywhere but in my mind, yet I still can see it so clearly and almost feel it? Just imagining I could sit and talk with my characters while this song sounds somewhere around us... It's so weird and precious that I can't find the right words to describe this warm happiness that, again, doesn't exist. This comment will probably get lost somewhere, deep in between millions of thoughts of different people that happen to be here at certain moment in life. I guess I couldn't help but to spit it all out. You know, it's one of those moods.

I understand this more deeply than you may ever know. As someone who wields art as my way of surviving, I depend strongly on worlds and people who don't exist. Whether of my own imagination or someone else's, my heart feels connected to places I've never been, and over the years I've cultivated this feeling into an art of its own. The art of feeling a world so distinctly, that I remember that world as being real, and I can shape words around those memories in such a way that others might feel drawn to it as I am. It's a strange feeling, both wonderful and melancholy, but I truly believe I could not live without this phenomenon. It is, in a word, magic.

I feel like humans are meant to imagine, create, inspire, dream.. Although we choose to be distracted by the little things. I lucid dream often, which gives me that peace that needs to be restored, the peace which we may never get in this world. I dream about my characters, some faraway place that doesn’t exist on Earth, a place where I can be at peace. I find myself wishing I could have these things in my life, in reality. What I need to remember is that _imagination_ will always be with me. Imagination is the best part of being a human.

Same here! There are so many worlds in my mind with different people, just like you mentioned. It has become my safe place in a way, away from humans in real life, away from today’s society. Just a place of peace for my soul. I meet new people there, explore the city and do different activities. It is so amazing and so fascinating how the human brain works. When that place is settled (no more modifications), I just start to draw it and a special palette is associated with it. And I visit it from time to time. Pure nostalgia in my head... i found this vid 3 years ago during lockdown and it seriously changed my life. it made me feel the strongest emotions i’ve ever felt to this day and i used to watch this every night. now i just come back to it every few months and the feelings aren’t as strong as they used to be but that’s okay because i still love it dearly, so thank you!

Although I didn't grow up watching Howl's Moving Castle, it seems like an amazing memory from my childhood. This song is just so... light. Like how careless a child can be while out having fun. It sounds like my childhood to me, which is why I will hold on to this movie. Something about the world and the characters make the movie happy. It's something that leaves me happy.

This was and still is, to my opinion, the best kalimba rendition of this song (and the perfect kalimba for the task!). I come back to hear it every once in a while. Your videos made me start to learn to play kalimba. Thank you very much!

There’s an old game called “ib” and it really reminds me of the soundtrack of that game.

I was just coming down here to post this exact comment! Made me wonder if the original soundtrack to ib was actually recorded on a Kalimba!

Even though im sitting on my bed. If i close my eyes i can vivdly imagine the soft sea air, with the towering castle behiend me leading into wonderous wastelands. And then i open them and realise fantasizeing about adventures there is making me blind to the biggest one of all.

I feel you. I enjoy being able to close my eyes and be able to create my own peaceful world where I'm able to sit down on the soft grass with no one to disturb me and I can run around forever endlessly with nobody to make judgements. To open my eyes again really makes it a shame that it wasn't real at all and it was essentially just a lucid dream. I wish I could stay there forever without having to worry about the problems of the real world. It would be a dream come true if I could stay there or if everyone could have their own paradise or their own dreams come true, maybe the world wouldn't have so much hate otherwise.

優しい音色でとても落ち着く。オルゴールは綺麗な音色だと感じて良いが、やはり落ち着く感じはどこか欠ける。 これは低めの弾ける音が、またなんとも言えない癒しをくれる。
