I shot both full frame and crop sensor DSLRs. Last week, I got the Canon R10. At 66 years old and fully retired. With today's technologies has come a long way on the crop sensor. The price, weight, focus detection and images are impressive. The only gripes I have are the short battery consumption and the lack of crop sensor (RF-S) lenses. I am using my old EF-S lenses with the adapter.

I shot with a Canon FT from 1968 until I went digital around 2003 with a Canon Rebel XTi. upgraded from one Canon APS-C DSLR to another for nearly 20 years until I got my APS-C R7. Canon has always held back its APS-C lenses, forcing me to use full-frame lenses, but the mirrorless shift has made their great old EF full-frame lenses cheaper (and usable with a cheap adapter) and I just got Sigma's RF-S 18-50mm f/2.8 lens, which is great. The 1st Canon-licensed AF lens, it's the size of the kit lens but as sharp as the legendary EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II. I'm still tempted by the R5 for low light, but I'm hoping they'll upgrade the R7 with a stacked sensor for better low light performance.

Correct. I've been shooting APS-C for several years. I kept upgrading both the Sony bodies and lenses. I finally ended up with an a6700 and seven decent lenses. But I still struggled with low light. I've been shooting ballet... 1) Poor lighting seems to be a standard for ballet. 2) I wanted to freeze frame so really want the subject to be still. No such luck with ballet which is all about movement, and sometimes fast movement of hands and feet. So ballet photography conditions are low light and fast movement. This is the most difficult photo challenge I've encountered. The first shock was how heavy the new body and lens are. After hearing, reading, and watching videos over the years I was fully convinced I had to step up to FF. The promise was I could use a faster shutter speed with FF. You know the argument is larger photo targets equals more captured light. I've had the A7IV body, and the 24-70 f/2.8 for about two weeks. I've tried many things to compare the A7IV and the a6700 but honestly they are so close I feel like I wasted my money. In some cases the a6700 betters the A7IV. In some cases it's the other way around. In any case the benefits of one vs the other are so slight that picture quality is really no better with the FF. Then little by little I ended up puzzled that I couldn't push the A7IV to solve my low light needs. It seems almost anything the A7iV can do the a6700 can do too. My advice to Sony is come out with a6900 that has two card slots. Nothing else is required.

Thank you for this! As a pro since the 80s, I have had the pleasure of following the tech developments around every curve and corner (except medium format). These days I shoot both APS-C and FF and on any given job there are several bodies lying around and I just grab whichever body/lens combo is right for that moment. I never, ever ponder which size sensor I'll need, because, as you have proven, 99% of the time it just doesn't matter! And guess what folks, in 35 years I haven't had a single client ask a question about any of this. As far as they are concerned, "Peter's cameras are the black ones, I think..." And yes (hahaha), I can't wait until my APS-C tech catches up to my iPhone! You have a new subscriber!

I absolutely love my Olympus micro 4/3 cameras. It can do everything I want in a camera. Also, my OM-1 can literally do things that no other camera on the market, that I know of, can do. 50fps with autofocus and 120fps without? Pretty cool tech. Noise has become a nonissue with the help of DXO Photolab. It’s just a fun camera to use that has more than good enough output.

Okay so here is the big question of the day. If crop sensor is king why did Fuji produce medium format cameras with a big sensor? Yes, I follow some landscape photographers who swear by the bigger sensor's resolution. They even did videos to show comparison between that and the full frame. Just food for thought. I truly believe that choosing a camera system is a personal decision based on the photographer's needs. While a crop sensor works well for some it may not work well for others.

Landscape is one of the disciplines where you can't control dynamic range
@photorockbar471
@photorockbar471 Жыл бұрын
landscape at the top level has always been about medium and large format. If two sensors are the same quality as far as image rendering, then the larger sensor can process more information on a larger size sensor. So, it depends on how large the final print is relative to the viewing distance. Since medium format is not a standard sensor size, the difference relative to full frame may not be significantly bigger enough to matter. It really depends on the image, the light and how big the final output is.
@melaniezette886

What was true with film is true with digital. Medium format has the wow factor, you just want to look closer and closer and it is marvelous to see more details. I can mimic this with a telephoto and a giga panorama. It's far easier than large format film camera. It proves large capture is the way to large prints with no noise.

Shooting a Nikon D810 & Fuji X-T3, I can attest to the fact that DXO Pure Raw 3 is a game-changer when used on higher ISO Fuji files, that narrows, if not largely eliminates, any differences between APSC and full frame image quality. And I would imagine that the newer higher resolution sensors on the X-T5 and HS2 makes any differences even more insignificant.
@Revup1

I disagree with your premise Booray. It used to be that APSC had the adantage of size and price with a compromise on quality, but that's no longer the case. I agree the quality issue is much closer BUT my last nikon pro FX camera was priced the same as a Fuji XH2, not even the XH2S, anf forgoodness sake an XH2 is the same size and wieight as a Nikon Z6ii! so price, size and weight are no longer advantages for APSC. Technology is advancing everywhere. Saying that APSC is now better than FX is a bit like saying that soon mobile phones will be better than APSC, and maybe that's the video you need to make next. I've been in photography since the 1970s and shot 35mm film, and still shoot film, I converted to APSC in around 2001 and hated it, mainly because of the lens issues, (FX lenses for DX cameras!!) I went FX in 2008 with a Nikon D700 and have never looked back.....but I still use 35mm and APSC, my camera 'bag' changes according to what I'm shooting and that's where my argument sits, its about how and what you are shooting, horses for courses, and what you do with your images in post (My FX Raw files are much more tolerant to manipulation), not whether one format is better than another.

I would not trust someone who loves drinking coffee from cupboard with a straw. More seriously, this storm of commercial-like videos claiming that FF is finished has an interesting consequence : lots of people desperately trying to get rid of their FF camera especially DSLRs almost giving them for free. You can get a D4 for 500 $, or a 1DX for 800 $ in good condition. As an architect, I am much better off to use my 17-40 f:4 L USM with a FF body than having a 22-64 with an APSC. And to make people feel even pityer for me, I am actually using a 1Ds3 I bought for 290 $ and I love it. It is a fantastic value for money. I see no point trying to convince people with so much conviction and talent that FF are defeated, especially because value for money is not universal but depends heavily on what you are doing.

The problem with APSC is/was, that most manufacturers used the crop sensors primarily in the cheaper entry level cameras. That‘s why most FF cameras are better: Not because they are FF but because the FF sensor is built into the better cameras. For me APSC was always the sweet spot. That‘s why i like the Fuji system so much, because they are developing top of the line professional cameras based on APSC sensors and they are proof that APSC is indeed as good as FF. Both have their Pros and Cons but the differences are minor and - if relevant at all - dependent on your style of shooting. IMHO it‘s all personal preference … nothing less, but nothing more. Greetings and thxs for your videos.

My first mirrorless camera was the Canon R5. It was a fine camera in many respects. But I'm a bird shooter, and reach is often my biggest concern. After a buddy of mine (who owns both the R5 and the R7) suggested that I try the R7, I rented it. Loved it so much, I bought one, and just started killing it with that body. The reach was phenomenal (usually with my 800 F11). After that, my R5 just sat on the dresser. Finally, I sold the R5 and bought a second R7 for my backup. That was over a year ago, and I never looked back :) This said, I think if I were still into landscape photography, I'd have stuck to my R5, as I do believe it is better for that purpose, than are my R7's. I should add though, my R7's have about a half a dozen things that could be improved, and I'm hoping some or all of these things will be resolved with the R7 Mk II. But even so, with reach being my priority, the R7 is still my best choice.

Definitely subjective, I went from fuji X-H1 to nikon full frame (z6ii) and haven't looked back, it's not just a little better at high Iso it's a lot better and so is the synamic range, I shoot a mixture of landscapes, portraits and street and the X-H1 is collecting dust now, when I saw the price of the xh2 that was when I decided to switch to nikon as for basically the same price I could get get the z6ii with the kit lens. Oh and the nikon glass is super sharp. In my opinion full frame is the future the z6ii is identical in size to the xh2

I bought my son's Nikon D-750 when he upgraded to a Sony full frame three years ago. We were both happy with our upgrades. Then I bought a Fuji XH2s in Fall 2023 for better video performance (the D750 is good for pics, not for video). I use my camera for news gathering stills and documentary videos. I love the user interface, film sims and overall experience using the XH2s. You, Booray told us all about the Classic Chrome sim in a past video and that's what I shoot my stills on mostly, now (Eterna for video). My D-750 stays in the bag most of the time, I rarely use it. After I switched to Fuji, my son then switched over to the Fuji X-T5 for his wedding photography. He is buying a second X-T5 for his second shooters so all pics will be the same color. So, while we both agree full frame is nice, The Fuji experience is better and neither of us care about only having an APSC sensor. At the end of the day if you have happy clients who pay you, that's all that really matters.

I'm glad you touched on software. I recently dusted off my old Canon 10D (6 megapixel APS-C), and I was pleasantly surprised at how good the images look with modern software compared to what we used in the 2000's (pre-lightroom). I can boost the iso a stop or two more than I could in the past and still get good results. I shot a wedding with a 5D Mark III, and used a 90D as a second camera with only available light. I couldn't tell much, if any, difference in the image quality between the two. I'm thinking of selling my full frame cameras and getting another 90D. Thanks for posting!

Size, weight, and price matter. I looked at a Canon EOS R. It’s a beautiful camera with great features. RF glass is state-of-art too. But I could not get the image out of my mind how big it was. And it doesn’t come cheap either. I had wanted to try Fuji after hearing good reviews and seeing their image output. Smaller and lighter are definitely chic these days. Going out for the day to shoot pictures should be pleasurable, not back-breaking. And thus has my Fuji adventure began. That was 3 years ago and my X-T30 is still great as an everyday camera. I totally agree. I got my X-H2 about a week ago and the first test shots I did were inside a room with very little natural light late in the afternoon, I just set the dial on P with auto-ISO and took a few random shots at stuff in that room. I had to look twice when I saw the images on my computer and the exif data showed ISO 12800, yes, there's some grain and softness there if you zoom in all the way to 100% of those 40 megapixels shots, but those pics not only were hands down 100% usable, but beautiful to look at. And those were JPEGs straight out of the camera, as you well say, there's a lot you can do in post processing if you shoot raw.

Full frame still takes better photos in terms of specs, but APS-C is getting so good that it’s good enough if you’re a hobbyist. The reason I switched is because I started taking street photos and I don’t want a giant camera that will cause the people to constantly feel my presence, that can make them uncomfortable and ruin the photos. But I noticed that people are actually very uncaring when you carry a small “unprofessional” looking camera because you look like a mediocre tourist who probably takes bad photos of everything.

I shot film on Pentax, and then I shot APS-C for years on Pentax, and loved the results. I don't think APS-C is going anywhere, but I really doubt FF is going anywhere either, or medium format. I follow the lenses, and I simply like the images I get from my A7 IV with the Sigma 85mm 1.4 ART than I like images from the 50mm 1.2 on the XT-5. Light > Lens > Body, so I use the bodies that allow me to use the lenses I want to shoot with, and those lenses are not Fuji lenses. I can see shooting APS-C again if the lenses were there that I personally wanted to shoot with. Size is meaningless to me, I actually don't care for small camera's. The Sony is already too small for me. I'd be shooting with a Pentax K1 II if it had competent auto-focus. Also, if I want retro or film looks, I'll pick up my K1000 and load a roll of film. I don't get the obsession with smaller and lighter. If I want small and light I could use my phone. I don't want another phone. I love the price of the Fuji cameras... but I just don't like the images. I think if I were going to shoot APS-C again it would be with a Pentax K3 III. I like the glass, images, and ergonomics much better. So, if APS-C is the future, I'll happily by a Pentax again in the future :)

As a Fuji aps-c user, if I have to be objective, I have to say FF is just better. It used to be that APS-C was smaller and cheaper, but that's no longer the case. Full-frames are same size as APS-C, equivalent lenses are same size and even cheaper (sony 85mm f1.8 is $600, fuji 56mm WR f1.2 is $1000), pixel quality is better, and it can recover about 2 extra stops of light for the same noise level, which is a big deal. Getting a body + lens is about the same price, but quality favors one side more. Yes under ideal conditions the difference isn't obvious, but that's also the case if you compare a camera to a smartphone. I like the Fuji handling and ergonomics, but Full-frames nowdays are just a better choice for the same budget and weight, which makes me really skeptical about investing on more expensive Fuji aps-c lenses.

The dynamic range is directly tied to the software's ability to bring out information in the highlights and shadows by the way :) I loved my old fuji x-e2, but the modern prosumer mirrorless full frame cameras are objectively better technologically speaking (and not too far off size wise). From auto focus, to video, to IBIS, to dynamic range, to lens technology, to the ability to use color profiles while shooting in RAW (an area fuji seriously lacks behind). I think whatever camera you prefer to use is best, but when you have jobs that require you to use a full frame sensor, the expensive xt-5 system is going to be useless.

While eye agree with all you say, eye swing both ways. I absolutely LOVE my 5 Fujifilm cameras, but I also use a full frame Sony A7II for two reasons you neglected to mention. First of all is the fact that I have & use regularly a substantial collection of vintage lenses, which I vastly prefer to use as originally intended for the obvious reasons, especially wide angle wise. Secondly, it gives me more space for cropping when doing so. Each format serves a necessary role in my enjoyment.

Exactly, there are times when I use my Fuji X-Pro2 and other times when I need a full frame. One example is when I shoot with my Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art adopted, on the Canon R5. If I were to get an equivalent for my Fuji I would need to find a 33mm f1.2 as sharp and for about £500. Not going to happen!

I'm already at a disadvantage with DSLR as a street photographer until I can afford mirrorless, so I'm not about to add more bulk by going to a full frame camera. OR having to buy even bigger lenses because of decreased focal length on a ff sensor.

I am a professional photographer for over a decade. I have worked with FF for so many years. Canon, Nikon, Sony, I used it all. I always looked down on APS-C but i switched to Fujifilm last year for my professional work. Because I couldn't tell the difference between the two. Yes there are a few exceptions but overall it is equally as good. The weight, size, price,... Convinced me to do it. For the same price as a new FF, I can buy a medium format. And Fujifilm skipped the FF-hype to invest in medium format cameras. They are 10 years ahead of their time by not going the FF route. Now all the major brands are way behind. But beware to say such things out loud, you'll get roasted every time. I have been.

If they only used the whole sensor 1" sensor surface! But you are absolutely right, smaller sensors mean less work for computational photography and the smartphones are at their limits on sensor size without increasing the size of lenses. One inch might still be doable even if they don't use the whole area of the sensor while still gaining larger pixels than the older gen.

I shoot all formats (FF, APS-C, M43) and I like the results I get from all of my gear when used in different scenarios. Also, thanks to the obsession to switch to mirrorless (latest technology) sometimes for no reason the market is flooded with great used DSLR bodies and lenses at a fraction of their prices.

Sorry to say so, but you are galloping. I follow you 100% on your technical break-down, but you are completely wrong about 1 thing. In 2023 nor Sony, Canon or Nikon are investing in APF-c cameras. Canon has the R7 and R10 with much potential but with a crippled burst capacity and only 2 pitiful kit lenses. Sony evolves only with the FX-30, a blogging niche camera without a viewfinder. The ONLY brand that invests really in APF-c for the moment is Fujifilm. Sure they will do better and better and only eventually the others will follow, but this has not happened yet. The future is not now yet.

Agreed…this video is just silliness! Sony owns the the camera sensor market and look at their lineup-mostly FF. With mirrorless the weight and size difference between APS-C and FF is negligible. Most people that are happy with their iPhone cameras are not going to buy a handheld camera, no matter what the form factor is. Trying to squeeze more and more performance out of a smaller sensor such as, an APS-C or MFT is going to result in diminishing returns.

I agree, especially considering that aps-c would be really good for sport and yet still we do not have a aps-c from Sony that shoots 30fps or now 120fps no black out and dual card slot for pros… they are treating all aps-c for consumer only. It is a good sensor size but its winning is not really accurate to me because it’s not treated by canon or Sony as a serious sensor. Fuji is but they push more for consumers and street photographers. Nikon treats aps-c the same as Sony and canon. Pana is just going really small with 4/3 and full and one is just going 4/3 . So 10 months down I don’t think this is accurate

The camera market is shrinking. The full frame effect is due to a drop in beginner/amateur photographers, not that they're better. They're just tools, and APS-C has a lot more advantages. The most sold sensors on the market today are in smartphones. APS-C and Super35 sensors are used far more than any other sensor type professionally and dwarf the market in ownership, use, rental, and sales for the past 20yrs. Even smaller sensors such as 2/3" sensors used in camcorders and broadcast cameras, which camcorders are up 17% this year. Super35 is still the industry standard. Cost is primary from camera cost, rental or owned. Stability i.e. rolling shutter, and read speed which is way faster than Full Frame or Medium Format. Most media use deep depth of field from broadcast news, photojournalists, tv shows, sports broadcasts, plays, movies, etc. When you watch a movie, 70%-80% of it, is not using shallow depth of field. Not just video, but stills too. Aside from cost, it's weight, heat, lenses, size, etc. crews have to consider when trying to use a Large Format setup. Luckily things are getting smaller like the Alexa LF and FX3. Consider also storage cost. In the cinema world storage cost a lot, and its not like just storing something on a memory card and putting it in case. Many DPs still don't shoot 4K natively. They shoot 1080p, 2K, 2.3k, 2.5K then upscale to 4K most of the time if it's needed. Roger Deakins upscales to 2K. The news still shoots 720p and 1080i which has something to do with the available bandwidth. Full Frame is a hype machine to sell more cameras. I'm done blabbling

I went from Canon FF to Fujifilm a few years ago, and haven't regretted it. The Fujifilm X-trans sensor is super sharp. Noticeably better than the Canon Bayer sensor, with the obligatory low pass filter. People who complain about the noise on Fujifilm images probably have never tried demoisaicing with PureRaw, or used Capture One. I still have a full frame camera for when I need it, but I haven't found a need for it in a long while. It's a Canon R. And I bought it used. Another plus for crop sensor cameras - you can use adapted full frame lenses either as-is, or with a speed booster. That way, you get 2 lenses in one. And if you really want that large format look, you can always use the Brenizer method to get a bokeh panorama.

Armed with Lr and Topaz AI, I can "fix" almost any low-light compromise. Just bought a 11-20mm Tamron zoom - will add it to my travel kit. Thanks for a great video. As a hybrid shooter, I'm pretty comfortable with Fuji. I usually shoot manual focus and 1080 for my KZbin videos. Most views are on cell phones or monitors so that format works well still. The biggest priority is stability and the XT-4 with its firmware updates and with 16-80 fitted is rock solid. It's also light enough to throw on a DJI Ronan mini gimbal for tracking shots. The sensor is a good size for video considering super 35 - a crop sensor - is the professional filmmaking standard. So no need to switch. That said, some new FF cameras are great value prospects. The Panasonic S5-2 with 20-60 kit performs well on price, stability, focus, and overheating prevention.

For that reason, I am saving for a Sony FX3. You use f/5.6 for green screen, so you need that dual native ISO else you will have blinding studio lights.

Now is the time to look at Micro 4/3s. I also was a full frame Canon shooter until I broke my neck at work. I needed a lighter alternative to the brick I was used to carrying around my neck. I didn't want to sacrifice image quality but lighten the load. I purchased an Olympus OMD EM-1 Mark 3 with 5 lenses for $500 from a pawn shop! My Canon full frame cost $1600 for just the body! My 50mp Canon 5DSR cost $2000! The 5 axis in camera stabilization has almost removed the need for a tripod. In-body image stabilization with up to 7.5 stops of shake reduction. The speed and accuracy of the Auto-focus is one of the best in the industry. If I am worried about Mega pixels, I can do Handheld at 50mp and 80mp on a tripod. Fully articulated back screen. For the most part all the controls you will need to take a great exposure on the top of the camera. Extras such as bracketing, white balance, and others are in the menus. And the entire kit with all the lenses, body, and extras, weigh less than just the DSR and a 24-105mm lens. All of this is cheaper than a full frame or aps-c camera. So, I am saying that you did not go down the rabbit hole far enough to see that first if you are a photographer, the camera is a tool, not the end result. Second, as you get older and experience. You realize that you don't need to bring a shotgun to kill a fly. This is supposed to be fun!

I think we're in an era where the size of mirrorless full-frame cameras are getting smaller and even lighter. There are full-frame options like the a7c series that are the size of many aps-c cameras. There are even small and lightweight lenses for many full-frame cameras if you're willing to go with slightly slower lenses. The options for compact FF cameras has gotten better. I myself shoot on a Fuji XH2-S and absolutely love it and I do use it in a professional work environment for both photo and video work. It's an absolute workhorse and my clients have never once questioned my camera or even cared about the sensor size. BUT, with that said, I do miss the latitude of FF RAW files as well as high-iso performance. The other issue I have with aps-c is the crop whilst using vintage lenses, I feel like the you miss out on some of the character near the edges. With that said, you can't go wrong with either and really it comes down to what fits your style or needs.

I have the Canon R7 that cost $1,500 and Canons R8 full frame costs $1,500 so price isn't really an issue anymore. It's also lighter weight than most other cameras. I'm also thinking that crop sensor f2.8 is not the same as full frame f2.8 when it comes to shallow depth of field and background bokeh. I love my R7 for birds and wildlife and macro but I also love my A7iv and 35mm, 85mm, and 135mm prime lenses for that wide-aperture, low light use and shallow depth of field. It's like a carpenter deciding whether a jigsaw or a skill saw is better. You sometimes might need or want both.

I bought a nikon d3500 over a year ago mainly because it was cheap and the kit included the usual 18-55mm lens plus a 70-300mm. The reviews on it were good and it takes great photos. I've added a 35mm 1.8, 40mm 2.8 macro, 50mm 1.8 and 10-20mm wide angle lens to my collection. The amount I paid for the lot would only buy me a FF body with the same resolution (24mp). There would have to be a huge difference in quality to justify the extra weight, size and price of FF compared to what I have now. My s10 phone takes reasonable photos in most circumstances but it can't compete with the d3500 when it comes to macro or wildlife photography. With some landscape shots if you are only printing 6x4 you'd barely notice the difference. Only once you zoom in do you really notice the extra detail from the bigger aps-c sensor and better glass. Considering the huge difference in size of sensor and lenses between my phone and a dslr I'm impressed at how close it is sometimes. When it comes to video I use the phone which takes 4k footage which looks great even on a big tv.

I shoot Nikon DSLR. APS-C, and full-frame prices, are, in general, not the big, in this market. Also, Sony has so many full-frame mirrorless cameras in the used market, right now. IMHO, now is the time, for more people to actually get into full-frame, via the used market, because we grew up, just dreaming of full-frame, and it's benefits. Even older FF sensors, can perform better than newer, smaller, sensors, specially if the camera was a top-tier camera, during it's time. While I see your points, I really can't see FF going away, anytime soon. Larger sensors, will always have advantages, as you said. Just depends on one's needs, and preferences.

I had photos from it published in national magazines, newspapers and tv. Nowadays the main tool is an iPhone 12 Pro Max that takes good enough photos for immediate upload to social media. I would dare say it has better low light performance than my own eyes let alone my Nikon D810 which seems to irritate other Nikon users. The only camera system that matches it is a Sony A7Siii which I’ve seen people shoot astrophotography hand held. I do think Nikon is sticking with full frame as their good lens are still full frame. Their apsc bodies and lens are still budget and is the same with Canon and Sony. Fuji is the only brand that went in hard with apsc.

As a photographer currently thinking on changing equipment I couldn't agree more. I have a Canon 90D (APS-C sensor) a 18-135 kit lens, a 100 macro and 70-200. My rationale to considering switching is not the camera but (1) the lack of Canon ASP-C specific lenses, (2) the technology D-SLR vs Mirrorless, (3) sustainability as mirrorless cameras will have longer support life than D-SLR then (4) the price, a Fujifilm X-H2 + a 16-55 lens will go for $3048. while a Canon R5 + 24-70 lens will go for $5498.00 and sorry to correct you here but, that is a difference and not (I think you said) $800. Note that these are current B and H prices, while ADORAMA are similar. So yes, I am waiting to next week ImagineUSA to see if the vendors have special prices (not counting on it though🤣) and make the move to Fuji and sell my Canon equipment to recoup some of the investment. If a company makes both full frame and APS-C and their APS-C cameras do not have the features you mentioned it's by choice, not because of the size of the sensor. Fuji is acknowledged to have a weaker autofocus then say, Sony. But body functionality and programmable buttons are fine.

I have 2 Canon APS-C (70D and 90D) cameras. Generally speaking, I like your point of view, but look at reality.: Canon, Nikon, Epson, Apple, Samsung, HP, GM, Audi, BMW, Tesla etc. put their R&D and their marketing into the top notch products, selling them for big money to those who can use the special features and to those who like to show off. Other will buy the cheaper model from the same brand as a way to feel part of it. Eventually these features will also be put in cheaper products. So at the same time they sell 20% of products to pay for 80% of the R&D and 80% of products to pay for 20% of the R&D, even if they get more income from the cheaper mass produced version. I would love to see e.g. Canon make APS-C bodies and lenses that are fast, sharp and with the biggest possible apertures... Thanks for the video.

All very true! I also shot Canon full frame for many years and then the Fuji bug got me. Not for the lighter kit, but for the manual operation. I love the tactile dials for SS, Aperture and ISO. I use my Fuji X Pro 2 daily, and love the experience of taking photos with it. Yes my Canon has much faster AF, but when I use my X-Pro2 it’s not about that. It’s about taking your time and enjoying the process. One thing I did when I first started using the Fuji, is I purchase the SpeedBooster focal reducer, so that I could use my legacy lenses and the field of view was FF equivalent. More recently I’ve started using prime Fuji lenses and it’s fine. Just have to remember that a 35mm is actually a 50mm filed of view and so on. - on a side note your comparison to a FF camera with a f2.8 zoom lens would work if the lens for the crop sensor was a f2 Zoom. And unfortunately Fuji doesn’t make any. So it’s more like an f4 Zoom for the FF camera.

Totally agree. I bought myself a Canon R7 this summer and so far no one has been able to find a quality difference with 35 mm shots. About high ISO my thought is that if light is so poor you need to go up to ISO 64000, you better get yourself a pair of night vision googles or leave it for another day, when you can see the subject and frame the image. The dynamic range.... well, all APSC and 35 mm cameras encode the result in 10 bit format, so the dynamic range that you obtain in your final result is... 10 bit. Which by the way is a professional performance standard. Do you really want dynamic range?, then go for a Haselblad and its 14 bit raws.

I'm in a similar situation. But buying a used full frame and then getting used pro lenses in the future seems like the right way forward to me. But also the shallower depth of field is invaluable really. I love my 35mm 1.8 apsc lens for environmental portraits. But having a full frame lens that I can frame the exact same composition but get shallower depth of field. That's noticeable. If I'm in a hotel room for instance blurring that background is going to make my life easier. What's the Fuji equivalent to a 35 f1.4? That's a 23 f1.5. but I guess maybe it's like he said there still will be a use case for FF. But atleast for me in weddings I'm confident I made the right choice

@@ajeromemahon7808 to get comparative DOF if would have to be 23 mm 0.9 or f/1. Physically possible, but not available. I use 35 mm 1.8 on FF, an APS-C comparison would be 23 (or 24) mm 1.2. If I shoot wide open, that is. A 23 mm 1.4 lens is available, and gets more or less close to what I use in FF equivalent. A 50 mm 1.4 lens of course is difficult to replace, but even with my 1.4 lens I often use f/2, so 35 mm 1.4 is a more or less similar APS-C counterpart. Having FF, I like the possibilities of course. A 85 mm 1.8 lens is affordable, while a 56 mm 1.2 lens, which is the equivalent, costs quite a lot. (The camera price difference is still greater than the savings with the lens).

@@Bethos1247-Arne I'm not sure, but I think shorter focal length fast lenses are harder to produce. Also I'm not sure there's a 24-70 f2.8 equivalent.

There are exceptions I know. But I think we are safe in these purchases. Especially since I'm pretty sure the wider the focal length the harder it is to make good fast lenses. And true equivalent lenses will still be almost as heavy and expensive.

@@ajeromemahon7808 in the Nikon world the closest thing is 16-80 2.8-4, so it is not an actual equivalent at any setting. Still a useful lens, smaller, less expensive, and longer than a 24-70. I would consider 24-70 2.8 quite a special lens, really needed only in rare cases. Of course when it is needed, it could be added to the selection.

Such a great video. I presently use an Olympus but I'm preparing to buy either a XT5 or a XH2. Not sure yet. Features I like about both. If the Xpro4 comes out with a xt5 type lcd, I might go with that.

Having both I prefer my APSC for it's versatility. Full frames are so expensive too. The only time my full frame gets use is if I leave the house at night. It's not worth the extra money. Unless you got an unlimited budget.

I shoot APS-C myself, but aside fro Fuji does the market really bear this out? Canon and Nikon entered the mirrorless with heavy focus on full frame. MFT maker Panasonic entered full frame as well. Leica recently gave up their APS-C TL line altogether. Sony is still heavily focused on full frame. Who knows if OM System will even survive. Except Fuji. They’re really the only ones taking APS-C seriously. I think APS-C is great, but the photo market seems to be moving up market. Some are even moving from full frame to (smaller than traditional medium format) medium format like Fuji or Hasselblad.
@BoorayPerry

I think it will bear out. Canon, especially, has a habit of releasing APS-C cameras that are fantastic. There's just no reason for the manufacturers to keep using a more expensive chip.
@torb-no

@@BoorayPerry Maybe it will! I do hope you’re right, because it’s kinda sad that all the effort get put into these bulky full-frame cameras. Though, I disagree with your assessment of Canon. Their APS-C lenses always had a whiff of disdain for the format, as if they didn’t think it was worth investing in. (With an exception with their Canon M series of mirrorless, but those failed in the marketplace and seem to be abanandoned.) There is one interesting trend specifically by Canon, and maybe espescially Nikon that seem interesting though that‘s kinda showing less hostility between APS-C and full format than seen previously. They seem to be designing full format lenses to also work really well for crop. You could always technically do that, but it didn’t seem as an intentional strategy, but now it kinda does.

Yeah but what apsc cameras come with the same features of full frame cameras? Like what apsc model would be comparable to the hybrid capabilities of the Sony A7IV?

The resolution of the lenses in lp/cm still limits the useful Megapixels to about 26-30. Thats why I took the XH2s.

Been saying this for many years now. I moved from med format film to 35mm film then finally settled on apsc. I’m a very happy Fujifilm shooter since the XT3 and thinking about the HS2. I’m keeping a close eye on mft too but depth of field will plateau unless, like as you say ai is used like in phones…
@matthiasj668
@matthiasj668 4 ай бұрын
One variable that's missing in the video is "depth of field". If I use a FF lens on my APS-C camera, I will need to step back to get the same field of view. The subject will be further away from the camera. Result is a less shallow dof. What that means is that potentially, FF will have a shallower depth of field. Now, on aps-c this can be solved by using very fast lenses. However, this gets more challenging on even smaller sensors (e.g. smartphones). The artifical generated bokeh can't yet compete with real bokeh, and I think that this will be the main challenge for the smartphone, that is not won so easily

Ok, aps-c does lose to full frame with 60mp. But, I love my Sony A6700 using FF lenses. I have the A7R3, love it, but that a6700 is so much more fun to shoot with. I choose the camera body depending on what I am going to do. Casual, family, walks in amusement parks, tooling around town, it's crop sensor all the way. I don't think people really consider how good the smaller sensors are. I am amazed all the time, almost to the point of selling my FF cameras.

I also have and love the A7R3 - but I grab my a6600 most of the time when I leave the house to go shoot. I've been on the edge of selling my FF camera but haven't quite made the move yet. There are so many excellent APS-C lenses being released these days, by Sony and other companies, so lens selection is not an issue like it was years ago.

I would say that it depends on the type of photography you do. I do wildlife and landscapes. I will say that at least in the Sony system (I have the a6400) the dynamic range isn’t enough. I prefer a full frame or medium format than apsc for landscapes but I shoot my a6400 with the 200-600mm all day for wildlife. I would also say that the full frame cameras just feel better but that’s 100 percent a personal preference. I’m 6”2 and have large hands. At least for me, the Sony apsc ergonomics aren’t as good but I still love mine.

I ended up putting a battery grip on my XT4 specifically for the ergonomics. I'm also a big guy and it just feels better to me. For street shooting I'll remove the battery grip and pop on the 18mm f2 pancake and it's a very compact little rig.

Crops are quite good now but I think not yet at the tipping point. Maybe in another 3 years or so. I was once a wedding shooter with a 5D2 (the year it came out), but since got involved in other businesses. Nowadays I remain a hobbyist photographer with an EOS R more recently. I am now very tempted to swap to an XT5 because I was sold by what people say about it being equally as good IQ to FF, smaller, lighter, and cheaper. Smaller and lighter? Yes. Equal IQ - yes if you compare the top Fuji lenses to the non L canon lenses. But against L lenses, not by a long shot. Still some ways in my opinion. Plus, in low light situations, the FF still wins hands down. Cheaper? not by a long shot. I mapped out every focal length and aperture lens between Canon and Fuji and compared prices. Fuji xmount is way more expensive. An example. If I shoot 50 f1.8 on a canon (USD199), I’d have to get a 33 f1.4 (33x1.5=49.5mm and f1.4x1.5=f2.1) on a Fuji (USD 799). Fuji is more expensive. The same holds true for every focal length and every aperture. So I’m inclined to replace my EOS R with another FF body. But I really find the classic camera looks of the Fuji, with its beautiful dials and smaller and lighter body appealing. I guess I’ll wait a couple more years.

Just came across you, I’m in the market for a camera and last one was Pentax 35mm SLR with film, someone like me that’s just a hobby for taking photos and videos on my first smartphone and now just bought a upgrade, I’ve been debating to myself, full frame, ASP-c, full frame, ASP-c back and forth, well if you compare any smartphone sensor sizes the APS-C are huge compared lol and will get better quality photos but the gap is getting much smaller due to the software, I’m in the save money camp and weight and size and used market and the fact ApS-C has better reach, yes I get full frame for professionals and some people will spend a fortune on cars but my Toyota does same job at a fraction of the cost and depreciation and is super reliable, when I watch a film especially older ones then I watching the story, not sitting there looking at the sharpness, quality, the film makers as set the tone and mood with darkness, brightness, colour, so I can enjoy the story. Thank you for making me se sense and and looking after my wallet 🤓🤩🤩, you have a new subscriber 😀😀

Having come from Fuji XT4 to Lumix S5 the major advantage for me is ISO intolerance for video. It's abit like comparing a car to a motorbike, it depends on your use case but there are pros and cons to each. I think the Fuji is a camera your shoot with your heart , I just love the tactile feel of the camera and its so easy to pick up and shoot each day. For commercial work the Lumix is my first choice.

Didn't think I would agree that aps-c is going to be the way to go, right up till I decided to try the fujifilm xt5, I liked the style and looks first, then I started to do alot of test shots and that's when I realised that I don't have to spend the big dollars on a full frame mirrorless, this xt5 is great to use and the results are amazing, I shot 35mm for yrs and when digital came about I was not impressed, but now I only take images for myself and I can still do a 4ft print of a panorama and you can't tell it was shot with an aps-c camera. So that's my opinion and and that's all that matters, and yes I would use the xt5 to shoot for a client.

I shoot 75% with my vintage legacy manual prime lens collection. That being the case, I shoot with Full Frame, APS-C, & micro 4/3 with the same lenses with two handfuls of cheap adapters. Each format has their advantages and disadvantages, which I exploit as needed. I have a couple of modern automatic lenses for each when the mood or situation strikes.

I've seen this same argument in other areas of technology. The point is not that hand crafted things aren't better than robot constructed things. The point is that not enough people are connoisseurs, willing to pay high prices for marginal differences. Is classical music of a higher quality than popular genres? Of course it is. But filling an opera house is harder and harder. Is a hand made suit better? Of course, but tailoring is becoming very niche. Camera manufacturers are making more and more expensive products for a smaller and smaller audience because young people especially don't care that a Canon is sharper than their phone or has less "noise" in lower light photos. They are wowed by what their phones can do and the promise of what they'll do tomorrow. And these people are the clients of tomorrow. Most won't be fussed over the quality of bokeh and slither thin DOF.

See also, fake bokeh. If that technology ever matures to be indistinguishable from the real thing, it's basically game over. The only way to distinguish yourself as a photographer is extremely well composed shots with excellent lighting, be it through experience, good preparation, or artificial light.

You know other than low light which is VERY rare for me and not like i can use my Godox with my propac to counter that... My Nikon D7100 to ME... beats the ish out of my Sony A7rii with HALF the mp. Something about those colors, the light, the balance, the overall view of the photo is just better. I've been on and off to sell/trade my full frame for a 5DS or Nikon D850 on purpoe. I really do not see a difference. I keep it for my fashion work and detail when i need major crop but I do that in camera to begin with. DSLR's will be here for a looong while and APS-C will too especially with the tremendous amounts of lenses and shops that still service DSLR's available. This was a fantastic video!
