Aptera will save regardless of the sun. It is the most energy efficient EV available so it takes very little electricity to charge compared to other EVs (approx 2-3x less than a tesla). Free level 1 chargers (aka electrical outlets) are quite easy to comeby at offices, hospitals, etc especially in northern climates because it is the same as an engine block heater and is trivial to wire.

Using medium sun exposure (here in SE Washington state) -- just a guess -- my savings would be $1,071 per year relative to our 2018 Subaru Outback (~23 mph) and $217 per year relative to our Bolt EUV (~4.5 miles/kWh or 0.22 kWh/mile; around town it's better; on road trips, it's worse). Another fun calculation is to determine to effective miles per gallon (mpg-e) based on electricity cost ($/kWh) (EC), gasoline price ($/gallon) (GP) and vehicle efficiency (e.g., 100 wH/mile for the Aptera) (AE): mpg-e = (GP / EC) x (1000 / AE) For us, EC = $0.0739/kWh, GP = $3.899/gallon and for the Aptera AE = ~100 Wh/mile. Do the math and you get 528 miles "per gallon" for the Aptera. That is, the Aptera can go 528 miles using the electricity costing the same as one gallon of gasoline. And that assumes ZERO solar contribution. If you never have to charge because of solar exposure and charging, then this number would be ∞ 😊. (And, actually, since we have rooftop solar, our effective electricity cost is closer to $0.05/kWh which results in an mpg-e of 780. That's insane. It's a no-brainer. Almost free transportation.) Of course, the sooner we get away from miles-per-gallon (ICE-speak) and think only in Wh/mile or miles/kWh (EV-speak), the better.

My wife would save 2,241 dollars/year. Don't forget 200 bucks in oil changes, another 100 bucks on brakes (average) no air filters, transmission stuff...cheaper insurance and so on. Roughly, 3,000 per year considering prices for maintenance keep rising, fuel costs are all over the place and...I'll build a 1,200 watt solar panel and 12 KW/h battery pack so she can plug into it. Oh yeah, then that can be used for spring storm power failures hmmm. OK, no more fun with maintenance....My wife wants one with AWD and 600 miles of range so watching closely. My wife can plug in her cell phone, she can plug in the Aptera but she really likes no oil/filter cahnges etc. and very low maintenance (I am the mechanic) No dealerships, no hidden charges, very easy to find in a parking lot, no rust...leave the dinosaur and the dino juice behind. @Skylancer727
@Skylancer727 Жыл бұрын
@@markfinley3703 it's nearly irrelevant. Many people way over estimate the extra costs of ICE, in reality you only spend like $20 an oil change with on average 3 a year. So at worst case you'll be spending $100 more a year. Otherwise EVs still need coolant, some have gear boxes with oil, the entire suspension systems, AC systems (one of the biggest failures in cars), wipers, etc. You'll also pay more with tires with an EV as the added torque is worse on the tread and being heavier on average also damages the tires. Aptera is lighter, but it also has one less wheel putting more force on each. Brake systems are the most contentious of the advantages to EVs. Yes EVs can get away with regenerative braking the majority of the time, but if the disks are steel not using them just means they're gonna rust and warp anyways. The pads will last longer, but the disks likely won't. You can mitigate this with aluminum disks and ceramic pads, but that's rather rare and both have worse stopping power (which EVs have normal brakes for extra and emergency braking). I wouldn't take maintenance as much a cost savings as much as reducing hassle.

I love the idea of the Aptera. But I'm not convinced it's viable in Alaska. And your calculator doesn't even show Alaska on the map. Picking "little to no exposure", it says I'd only have to charge 12 times per year, based off my daily average miles. But I have serious doubts about that with the low temperature impacts on battery charge, low daylight hours in the winter, and snow covering solar panels during some days. Not to mention road conditions seriously impacting efficiency. Gonna need to see some serious long-term winter testing before I'd consider it, unfortunately.

Battery size really doesn't impact this very much (aside from a small loss of MPK due to the weight of the heavier battery) as the savings are based on the MPG comparison between your existing vehicle and the average MPK of the Aptera. My EV as I drive it gets a bit over 5 MPK while others with a more wasteful driving style can get as low as 3.4 MPK so there can be a large variance between drivers. If your use requires 5 kWh a day and your expected to only average 4 kWh of solar charging per day due to the amount of sunlight where you live then on an annual basis your going to have to do around 30/31 kWh monthly or 365 kWh of charging per year regardless of the size of the battery. What will dictate how many times per year you add back that deficiency is you personal preferences. You can do this weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc, etc its all up to your personal preference as to how much of a range buffer you prefer to maintain and how often you choose to convenience charge. Perhaps it would be better for Aptera to just list the total kWh of Plug-In charging you'd be expecting on an annual basis instead of trying to determine how many times you'd personally plug it in to a charging station. Best!

A bit oversimplified. 40 free miles per day is based on 100Wh/mi? Unless you have a lead foot, if you should find that 68 mph requires about 100Wh/mi. The thing is, unless you are on a road trip, you are very unlikely to be averaging 68 mph which reduces your battery consumption to more 60Wh/mi which would result in roughly 67 free miles per day (based on the a sunny location like San Diego). The other thing that is left out is the details around charging. You don't want your battery to drop below 20% and ideally not above 80% unless you need that full range. What will it really cost to charge the Aptera? Not super easy to compute but doable. Take the amount of energy needed and multiply that with your local electrical rate. The savings will surprise you as you will in most cases find your savings much higher than this calculator. Of course if you are driving like you would on a racetrack your consumption will vary but this is assuming you also drive this way with your current vehicle.

Sigh ... really? Save thousands per year? For actual savings: don't travel. Your calculator is just a feel-good tool in the end. You don't check where someone lives, you just let them enter how much sun they see with a few options. It therefore also can't take things like seasons into account. When you tell them how often you'll need to charge, you don't indicate with what battery size this would be. For me it said 21 times. But I know that that is simply not true. At the end of the day, for most people, the solar is still a gimmick. a third of the year it will barely give any extra range due to not enough sun and even in summertime, you still have shade moving around, disturbing how much you can charge. Solar is a gimmick in the end, great for a few regions where it could work, but everywhere else, it is pointless to even invest in it. In that case, get some solar on your house, much more efficient.
@Yowzoe
@Yowzoe Жыл бұрын
yes! For the reasons you've given, both the calculator, and to a lesser extent the solar itself are marketing gimmicks. Gimmicks the Apteran fans are so willing to swallow without much scrutiny. It's sad that Aptera is not being 100% simply straightforward and less sloppy with their solar calculator. The Aptera can potentially stand on its own based on its efficiency as a BEV with a solar bonus. All this B.S. about only having to charge once or a few times a year is real-world *nonsense* and will bite them in the butt hard if they keep these silly claims up.

WOW! And less maintenance too! One less tire! ( What should do when they offer Buy three tires Get one Free?😉) But I agree with others “ I might want to drive my Aptera more!” Glad my possible 11 charges/yr could be free given our Net Positive PV Solar home production🎉 I will feel less guilty not driving around “ more vehicle” than we need. We will need new Country Song Lyrics… Still Room for “Old Red”🐕 in back of the Aptera but don’t need the BIG OLD TRUCK ! 🤔 Charging time at public places could tempt some to eat more unhealthy comfort foods during charging😔 so less need/time for public charging = better health ahead ?!

When aptera is done with production. Can you all give your employees an aptera they so do deserve it. Or have a plan to where if their car breaks down they can borrow an aptera until their car is fixed. It'll keep employees happy and keep them around. And you know what, THIS is the demographic that won’t be able to shift into the electric future. The lower class, the working class. People who can only afford crappy cars and will therefore keep driving crappy cars because it would cost too much to move up to a new vehicle. With a recession inbound, you might want to be extra careful calculating your projected sales.

Won't save me money. I charge my e-bike from the solar on my roof. On a full-sun day, that's 2,500 miles of charging. Same with my Prius Prime. I charge it on my solar and the solar covered all my charging, heating, cooling and normal electricity this year, with a little over a MWh left to spare (which is, what, 10,000 miles in an Aptera). The savings calculator says $158 a year, but it doesn't account for the e-bike or the solar on my roof. I'm still interested in an Aptera. But I'd really like a third seat option to snap into the cargo area.

Ok, one has to buy a new Aptera first, occasion Apteras are many years away. If Aptera can last longer than most cars, this will contribute much to the overal costs. Battery prices will come down eventually, battery prospects are great, such as cheap sodium batteries with very high energy/weight or energy/volume, sodium reserves worldwide are large. Does it take less energy to produce an aptera compared with other EVs? The opponents of electric cars claim that it takes much more energy to produce an EV compared with an ICE car, because of the battery pack (they are silent about the amount of energy to produce an ICE motor and a fuel tank, electric motors weigh much less). The aptera is relatively light, and requires a smaller battery pack, so I expect that also the Aptera production is energy efficient.
