I have been following all your reviews of the trilogy and it is the most thoughtful and well-researched analysis out there on KZbin. It is a shame that Indian movie goers pay little attention to the magnificent cienam of Ray, thank you for drawing attention towards it! I hope it inspires people to watch this great trilogy! As for my personal opinion, I think Apur Sansar to be the best in the entire three, contrary to the popular opinion. This is one film of the trilogy accessible to everyone and one of the most plot-driven, compared to its more poetic predecessors.

I wish you could read the novel....It's the best novel I have ever read.... It's so uplifting and heart wrenching at the same time.... I often recall, with teary eyes, the scene where old Indir, looks up at the moon in her small shelter.... The movies were really good, but the novel is on another level....

In Pather Panchali the train track was far, in Aparajito the train track was nearer and in Apur Sansar the train track was the nearest.

I am really thankful and indebted to you to provide us so beautiful a narrative of the great film of Satyajit Ray, the Apur Sansar, so succinctly in so short a time, with so much humour, fun and wit, it's really unbelievable and held us spellbound. Myself a great fan of Bibhutibhusan, like to think, Pather Panchali and Aporajito as autobiographical novels. If Ray is acclaimed as a great film maker, then Bibhutibhusan is also one of the great authors, still people of the world are mostly unfamiliar with his masterpiece works. It's a pity that language has its barrier, while film is accessible to all. I wish your journey will one day break the barriers of language, and you will take the trouble to contribute a few words on the great author whose works are mostly unknown to the outside world.

Very detailed and interesting review. Sehr interssant und gruendlich, und auch viel, viel ehrerbietig. Ray was a master of metaphor, and I wanted to point out some to you. Some of them are deeply cultural and will not be very obvious to even non-Bengali Indians. The train: you alluded to this. This was a reference to the constant instability in Apu's life. It also was a symbol of people leaving, like railway cars, there earth - stations. In Pather Panchali, it was the harbinger of Durga's imminent death. In Aparajito it was a signal of Apu's return to his mother's house, one of which happened too late. In Apur Sansar, it literally was what carried Aparna to her death. Apu crossed the rail tracks to hear the news of her demise. Apu almost killed himself by it as well, although he realised soon enough what a pig he was being. The train motif came to a beautiful closure when Apu offered it as a toy to his son Kajal, who rejected it outright, indicating that he would be Apu's anchor, his stability, not the novel. In the last scene, father and son walk by a river, and not a train track. A river is also ever-flowing, but also present and gentle. It indicates that Apu's life will now be a gentle boat ride, not a speeding train. The train toy, interestingly, got left behind in the grumpy grandpa's hand, whose smile of relief said it all. The train was exorcised from their lives. House: Whenever the family made plans of rebuilding their house, settling down in a better house, or earning more for the household, tragedy struck them. In the end, like the train stations, Apu's family would leave behind a train of deserted houses. Apu is a classic case of Man proposes and God disposes. Vaastu Shaap - this is related to the concept of the house mentioned above. In rural Bengal, where most house used to fashioned from mud, there was a belief that deep in the foundations of every house there lived a cobra. The cobra would be known as vastu shaap or "the home snake". Bengalis believed it to be the soul of the house. Sighting it was considered lucky, if dangerous, as long as it did not leave the house itself. Pather Panchali closes with the scene of a snake crawling out of the house and away from it. It was a symbol of the house having become soulless and empty. It also indicated that Durga was the soul of the house. Electricity: another recurring motif like the train. In Pather Panchali, the kids didn't know what electricity was and would listen to the hum in high tension poles. In Aparajito, Apu would boast of having an electric lamp in his room to his mother. In Apur Sansar, Apu uses electricity with wanton, much to the home-owners' chagrin. Thus electricity becomes a metaphor for modern, urban lifestyle. The crux though is that even with an increase in the urban-ness, Apu is still lonely and poor. Happiness, thus, comes from people.

Fantastic! Just finished watching all three of your reviews in one go. I loved your take on them. So many different perspectives. Even the recall points are different for us. Yet there’s this common experience of knowing that we have seen something profoundly human. Like most Bengalis, I too grew up watching and discussing Ray’s movies. I loved Apur Sansar because I could finally smile for him. For me Pather Panchali’s last scene of the snake slithering in to live in the hut haunted me for years. Also the scene in Aparajito where the mother is in despair that Apu is leaving and she knows she won’t see him again. I still can’t watch it. Watching the trilogy as a teenager left a different impression in the mind. I could return to the first and last films again only in my late thirties, and the middle, not yet. Powerful stuff. Thank you for your thoughtful reviews.

Absolutely.. it's not only watching his movies... It's all about observing his views.. What he had shown 50-60yrs back is absolutely relevant in our time also & will also be relevant after 100yrs.. actually what he said through the movies are all universal truth.. Well ... actually when I get someone who are interested in Ray, I just can't stop myself to share my views... Actually by seeing Ray's movies I have found myself... I could relate myself with various characters.. Anyway.. best wishes for both of you... You have told about watching Charulata.. it's also a fantastic movie.. it was made on Rabindranath Tagore's Birth centenary.. Ray made 3 films on Tagore's writing. Charulata, Teen Kanya & Ghare Baire.... In these 3 movies Ray changed many parts of original writing of Tagore & he showed in such a perfect way that no one (film critics & Tagore critics) could utter a single word against him... Perhaps Ray made something better than Tagore wrote.. I am eager to see your more reviews..

It's indeed a Masterpiece, I watched the trilogy several times and now watching again... BTW Ray Sir didn't cover the whole novel of Bibhutibhusun Bandyopadhay's Aparajito for ofcourse cinematic demand. As i read that i just love to share the ending there is a beautiful relationship b/w Kajol & Apu portrayed in the Novel. Not only that Apu took Kajol to his birthplace Nischindopur to make Kajol realise about the beauty of nature, life and more to give power, ingredients to his little imagination world!! It's an amazing writing too! I wish Satyjit Ray made another part about it❤❤❤

Also, it's good to see this Apu trilogy is available in color now on KZbin? I know it's a classic, doesn't matter, but, I liked Panther Pachali the first part of the trilogy in color and it was pretty good.

Good review. I don't know if Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay's two novels namely 'Pather Panchali' and 'Aparajito' are available in english translation , if available read the novels once , you will be frequently tempted to read the novels again. I myself have read the novels at least 10 times and would love to read again.
