Hello Jimmy and Dennis! I like your reviews very much. Despite coming from a different culture your understanding and imbibing the content that Indian movies provide, says how knowledgeable, passionate and open-minded you guys are! With this in mind, I would like to recommend you a 1983 movie from the Telugu film industry called Sagara Sangamam (literal meaning: the point where rivers meet oceans, but the meaning here is more philosophical. You would understand it if you watch). This movie was directed by the genius, K. Viswanath, who according to me is the most underrated Indian filmmaker ever. He has won several national awards, but not many know him. To give you a prelude, this movie is about a failed artist (dancer). The dancer is none other than the acting genius, Kamal Hassan, again a many-time national award winner. The beauty of the director here is that he has made a gem out of a failure story, which not many would be able to achieve. This movie started slow in theaters when it was released, but became a blockbuster because of word-of-mouth. P. S. In this movie you will see elements about Indian culture that you probably have never witnessed.

Thank you so, so much :) We really appreciate it and are so happy, that people like our work and share our passion. Sagara Sangamam looks very interesting and I've put it on our watch list. We will have to see if there is a version with English subtitles available.

One of the most striking theme of Aparajito is the separation of mother and the child as the child embarks on his own journey of life! Why Aparajito is more relatable and will forever remain so is because of it’s magnificent portrayal of the mother and son relationship and how the growing void between the two magnifies with the passage of time. Wonderful review!!

Thank you again for your wonderful observation and description. I sometimes muse if Ray lives for hundred years and start working for other world masterpieces like Les Miserable or Hundred years of Solitude. Ray had the unique and wonderful knack to shrink the masterpieces into few hours of cinematography without losing many of the finer details which the great authors weave in their pages so beautifully in their effort to create a vivid picture in our mind. Ray's success was it, he was able to project almost an equivalent image onto the screen of the cinema and sometimes beyond.

Feel like watching the movie or rather the whole trilogy again. I can recall the feeling of being transported in this world in an almost magical way. Certainly a great trilogy. I may have liked this one the most but I think if I rewatch the movies I've got more to relate with in Apur Sansar now than when I first watched it. The mother-son dynamics of this one really got me then and even today I would find it very touching and grief-ful - for how can one not feel the characters and what they go thru.. The whole trilogy is a masterpiece.

It is true classic film . Every where, in every decade, century, every country, society, clan , whatever may be religion or beliefs, Apus will leave for greater world. Apu is serching for life instead of monotonous village life. Whole world is there for him. No motherly love, bond immotion can hold him back.. This happen every where. Does it not happen in your country or life? Mother will always be waiting . Every passing train will give her a ray of hope. This is applicable in rural Bengal, or Newyork or Russia or Uganda and every where in all time. That is why it is a classic. Remember the last scene. Apu came back and looking for "Ma". . No sound. word but it speaks millions of words.

Thank you so much for watching this trilogy Jimmy and Buddy. The three have been an integral part of my childhood and to see this being enjoyed even after so many years by people so many miles away fills me with immense joy. Once I grew up and the Internet became a part and parcel of daily life, I read that a famous French director had said that he 'didn't want to see peasants eating with their hands'. I have always understood and respected difference of opinions but that had hurt me a lot back then. A lot. But with time I have come to only laugh at that comment. And to see that this movie is loved by Europeans to the same degree simply justifies my feelings. Thank you again so much both of you. I cannot do anything for your subscriber count, as much as I would like to. But please keep going at it. I only hope that your channels blooms soon in the future.

You are welcome :) We are so glad to finally have watched all three movies (the review for the third will be up in a few weeks) - such wonderful works of art. Full of beauty and honest emotions. I totally understand that you were hurt hearing that quote. I myself was totally baffled by it because François Truffaut is actually a really great filmmaker who did a lot of astounding and also sensitive films. To read that he said such dumb words about the film is really off-putting. I can only imagine that maybe it was the "culture shock" and he was still kind of young (though he must have been in his twenties at least)... Either way, stupid take for sure. We promise you to keep on going with the channel. :) Unfortunately we don't have that much time on our hands but this channel gives us a (little) place to talk about our passion and the feedback by viewers like yourself is so awesome. :)

Great review. Please Keep it up. “Charulata”(1964) “ (The Lonely wife) by Ray is another masterpiece, adapted from a short story of Rabindranath Tagore. This time the Legendary Satyajit Ray-Subrata Mitra-Banshi Chandragupta combination meets the Legend of the Legends ... Tagore. Rest is History. Please add it to your watchlist too. But Apu trilogy is the best work of Ray IMHO.

Thanks for your support :) We try to watch as much as we can legitimately. The Apu trilogy has been available on blu-ray and now it's also on the Criterion Channel streaming service, which we have access to. Many films are also available on Netflix or Amazon Prime, though we have to use a VPN to get access to the sortiment of other countries on those platforms. Completely new Indian movies are often shown at one specific cinema here in Vienna. And then sometimes we have to rely on KZbin, where some movies are uploaded. (Often we have to search for seperate English subtitles with that.)
