I'm happy the video industry is finally using photography lighting options (I've been requesting this for quite some time); aka "zepplin" and "beauty dish." I film in a lot of tight spaces, where there is no room for book lighting and flags; these bowens-mount soft boxes are what I use (also, less heat in the hot summer, when the AC is off when recording sound). The inner diffusion circle spreads the light to cover the entire outer circle. If you remove the inner diffusion, you will see a hot spot in the center, creating an uneven, high amount of light in the center & very little light at the edges. Thanks for this video, look forward to tmore.

Hi, really enjoyed your review. I have a question. What difference of softbox depth can show in lighting?

Size of the light source (in this case the front diffuser on the soft box) is what determines the softness. Beauty dishes are a nice look, but usually quite a lot smaller and need to be quite a bit closer for the right effect. So they're not exactly the same. Both are good, just different.

Great review! It seems like more and more manufacturers are going to this kind of setup where the rods are permanently attached. I agree that the reduced setup time is a great advantage for a slight trade-off on storage/carrying size. I think the ‘mini’ would be great for fashion or times when you want a more dramatic look in your portrait. I definitely used that type of look in my fashion work. I’m in the market for some new soft boxes and was thinking of going all Profoto. I currently use Photoflex and it’s been good. But the design isn’t as professional caliber as I would like. I am now at 100% and I can barely light a talking head properly with the reflector on. Did you encounter this issue? thanks
@curtisjudd4 жыл бұрын
Soft boxes cut the light output substantially - 1 to 2 stops - so this is not unexpected. You might try increasing ISO or removing the inner bounce to see if that will work for your situation.

Thanks for the video. I ended up getting the light dome ii but it seems like the umbrella material is slightly too small for the rods and will not attach to the velcro in the back. :\ This allows light to spill out the back and sometimes introduces unwanted light onto a back wall. Other than that, I like it! Do you have any solutions for this or have you experienced it?
@curtisjudd3 жыл бұрын
You do have to work with it but I was able to get the Velcro attached. They intentionally make a tight fit so the dome keeps its shape. But if working with it for 15 or 20 minutes initially still does result in getting the Velcro attached, you might want to contact Aputure support and have them confirm whether you got a bad copy.
@vivianvaldi78715 жыл бұрын
Hello Curtis. I pretty much follow u about softness quality discrepancy between the two. But in the same time, I'm guessing some bouncing on the dark side could help with the Light Dome Mini (in this particular set up). Plus is it me ? I see more details and saturation with the LDM ?
@curtisjudd5 жыл бұрын
Hi Vivian, it can help so that the shadows are not as dark but it will not change the gradient from light to shadow - it is still harder than the larger LD. I agree that there appears to be a bit more detail with the LDM. Harder light will often give the overall sense of more detail. I didn't notice a difference in saturation.

Hello Curtis. I enjoy your thorough and deep dive in the cases that you present on your channel. I am a Canon Speedlite user, and I use the 600EX-RT, with a guide number of 60. Do you think that this can be used with good result together with the Aputure Light Dome II?
@curtisjudd3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jan, I'm out of practice on guide numbers so I'm not sure what that means in terms of light output. But my sense is that the full size light dome is probably a little too big for a speedlite. The mini might work ok.

Great video and explanations. A must watch for people interested in those two softboxes. I was wondering: what stands do you use to hold those lights + softboxes?
@curtisjudd4 жыл бұрын
Mostly c-stands at this point. They’re a lot sturdier than folding travel stands. But when I have to keep the mobile kit lighter, I use some 20 year old Manfrotto light stands 😀
@dev_does_software69484 жыл бұрын
@@curtisjudd Thank you for the reply. I wasn't sure whether normal light stands would suffice (I have a bunch of Amazon Basic ones). But yes, C-stands are probably a safer bet.

Really like the look in this review. The soft face light plus the background warm beam light makes the scene looks very promising and makes the talent very trustworthy. Do you have the lighting setup tutorial for this look?

Hi Fangshi Zhu, thanks! Not this specifically, but we have covered the soft key here and hard lighting for the background beam: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXOpfo2Yapunmpo kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYTceGCInb-lg7c

@@curtisjudd Thanks Curtis! This is exactly what I am looking for! I saw Ted Sim in your video and tried to find the lighting tutorial from Aputure channel but couldn't easily find it. Your content is educational as alway! Guess I am gonna start learning how to shape the light.

I decided to go with the II, it was back ordered but shipped out pretty quick, so I'm just waiting, as it's coming at the same time as the c120d. I'm trying to move up from some of these cheaper lights that are just okay, but I'm also hoping with this and another light I've topped out on light purchases for now.

I got the c120d II and the Light Dome II. I found everything really easy except figuring out how to snap the spokes into place. The instructions in the box don't say anything and the videos show people press down to get it into place. Curtis is a tall guy with long arms, I'm an average guy with slightly short arms and reaching down the entire Light Dome to press it as seen in most videos was a challenge. When I tried from the sides, it required more force than I expect and failed often. Still, it's easier that any soft box the requires sticking poles in holes. I still have nightmares about that, and I'm afraid to tear down some of that equipment when I use it. And I don't think this is a serious problem, but it would be nice if the included a little bit more about construction in the box. But that's about the only thing that's missing, the rest of it is great and probably doesn't require any instructions. The velcro parts are trivial to work with. The light is really long, longer than I had pictured, so I can see if you don't have the space how this is a problem, and I can imagine wanting the mini for some setups. I completely recommend this dome and the c120d II. I'm in love with the way my light looks.

Great video Curtis! Love the demonstration about the use of the grids. Looking forward to a video where you compare the Light Dome II, Mini II and the soon-to-be-released Light Dome SE. Hopefully the SE is a good compromise between the Light Dome II and the Mini II, and ideal for those in a smaller space, but still want a good soft light. If you could please look at the Apurture website and the specifications on and photos of the Light Dome SE Curtis, if you had to make an educated guess, do you think this is likely? I'm trying to decide between holding off a purchase between the Dome II and Mini II and waiting for the SE? Use case would be talking head videos.
@curtisjudd4 жыл бұрын
Hi Danny, yes, I'm testing the Light Dome SE presently - just used it for a shoot last night. I think right between the mini and II is a good way to describe it.

@@curtisjudd Thanks Curtis! And that's so exciting that you have your hands on it. Is there a rough date as to when you have a video coming out showcasing it? I don't believe there's a release date for the product yet - not sure if it's in line with that of the Amaran 100d/x & 200d/x on 7 Jan?

Yes, there is a difference in softness but considering the form factor the Mini is doing a good job, even when directly compared. My studio is small so I went for the Mini. Thanks!

Do you know if there are softbox that can be put on the Ls mini ?
@curtisjudd5 жыл бұрын
Hi Marcel, the Mini 20s are a little too small to support a softbox, but I usually shoot them through a scrim or silk, such as the center section of a 5-in-1 photo reflector like this: bhpho.to/324rSbh You'll need a way to hold that in front of your light, such as another stand, but it does a nice job softening the light.
