apparently when you work out percentage error for burettes and balances,you have to multiply by two because you take two readings. That's what my teacher said atleast. So I am confused as to why he didn't actually 0.15/3.98 x 100 x 2 which would actually give a %error of 7.5%. Perhaps that might be a marking strategy that's unique to Edexcel but still I wonder.

How is number of moles of ethyl ethanoate and water produced is same as the number of moles of ethanoic acid reacted but not as same as number of moles of ethanol reacted. And how can we calculate the concentration of each reactant and products when the volume of reaction is not given.

12:40 shouldnt the sodium carbonate test be done before the tollens reagent test? because if it was done afterwards then there would be fizzing as the reagent will have oxidised the ethanal into ethanoic acid
@georgey6423
@georgey6423 5 жыл бұрын
they asked what tests could be done, so you list the ones that could be done, this doesnt mean that you are doing all of them, just listing the possible ones. I used to think that as well but teacher said they only asked for the ones possible, you are not doing all to same mixture

for q.2-01 when working out moles of ethanol why is is (1.2×10^-1) - 6.40×10^-2 and not (1.2×10^-1) - 0.016
@TheGemRobin
@TheGemRobin 7 жыл бұрын
0.016mol are the moles of ethanoic acid that are left at equilibrium, so (8x10^-2) - 0.016 = 0.064 moles have reacted. That means 0.064 moles of ethanol have reacted because the ratio of ethanoic acid : ethanol is 1:1, so you have 0.12 - 0.064 = 0.056 moles of ethanol at equilibrium. Hope this makes sense :)

Can someone explain for the second part of question 1, why 4 electrons produced??
@TheGemRobin
@TheGemRobin 7 жыл бұрын
It's one of those simple half equations, so basically you do the EveryOne Hates Chemistry rule (EOHC). So first (E) make sure all the elements (apart from hydrogen and oxygen) are balanced; in this case the carbons already balanced so this is sorted. Second (O) balance your oxygens by adding H20 where it's needed; one oxygen on the left and 2 oxygens on the right, so you need to add one H2O on the left to balance it. Next (H) you need to balance the hydrogens by adding H+. 8 on the left and 4 on the right, so add 4H+ to the right side. And then finally (C) you sort the charges out. No charge on the left, but because you have 4 + on the right, you need to add 4 electrons to the right to cancel them. Hope this helps :)

@@TheGemRobin hii this was so helpful , could u please explain why there are no charges on the left ?
@gemmarobinson3838
@gemmarobinson3838 2 жыл бұрын
@@fatimaalamien8786 Just to balance out the charges - you've added 4 positive H ions so you need to cancel them out to make sure there's not an overall positive or negative charge on either side.

@jamalnajeeb751
@jamalnajeeb751 7 жыл бұрын
It's got a high charge:size ratio (3+) as he mentions. If you check out the other transition metal ions (M) with a charge of 3+ like Fe3+, Al3+ or Cr3+. When they react with carbonates (CO3^2-) they all form [M(H20)3(OH)3] a precipitate and CO2 Your best bet is juust to memorise this tbh Just tryna confuse us with the Ga for no reason :/
