Aqua Quest Safari Large Tarp - Impressions and Feature Overview

Thanks to Tim from the Tactical Defender KZbin Channel and the people at Aqua Quest, I have had the opportunity to take a look at the Safari Large Tarp. This is a 10x13 tarp made from 70D Nylon fabric. Overall, extremely nice fit and finish, nice features, great color, and a great size if you're looking for a tarp as part of your shelter system.

Great review, but isn't the Safari series constructed of 40 D nylon? The Defender series is constructed of 70 D.

@@outerlimitless Actually, I stand corrected. Both are constructed of 70 D nylon. The Guide series is constructed of 40 D. What makes the Defender series so much heavier even though it's constructed of the same nylon as the Safari series is the waterproofing. The waterproofing on the Defender series is much more durable than either the Guide or the Safari series. The Safari series has a stronger nylon than the Guide series, but doesn't have the added weight of the extra heavy duty waterproofing. They all have the same ability to handle a 20,000 mm water column, but the waterproofing on the Defender series is much more durable. Both the Guide and Safari series share a silicone and PU combination coating, whereas the Defender series uses a TPU (Thermoplastic PolyUrethane) and DWR (Durable Water Repellent) combination coating. This gives it an extremely durable waterproofing that can withstand years of harsh conditions, but you do pay a weight penalty.

@@thriftysurvivor6117 yep. My 3X3 Defender is over 4lbs , I think. They add weight to your load in a hurry, but damn solid. I still believe I made the right choice. It's a 4 season tarp. Tough, waterproof, a billion tie off points and the configurations are endless. Worth every penny, and every pound!

I'm also considering whether to buy the 3 by 3 or the large, however, I'm unsure. It will be mostly used for little backpacking and day hikes but I don't know which size to buy. Any advice?

Haha, you beat me to the punch!! I use 3x3 personally 99% of the time...I've been in horrible conditions with my 3x3. This video shows it being used in freezing rain and really messy conditions...it's a 2 part video...I think part 2 shows the aftermath of a night in freezing rain!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGOlhaGqmr-hb6M

Every now and then I wish I had an extra couple of feet on my tarp, but I light a compact backpacking kit and would opt for less weight these days.

Have you used guide series? If did how does the material compare? Do you think it's just as durable?

Honestly, I LOVE light weight tarps, but have never used the guide series. I can tell you the safari is heaver than I tend to carry. I have the DD Hammock Superlight tarp and have used it for almost 4 seasons...it's similar in weight to the guide series. I would suggest that route if you're going to be hiking with it. If you're bopping into the woods for an afternoon, or feel like you need the durability, then maybe the Safari is for you? What do you want to do with it?

I have been watching a lot of British bushcrat videos. a lot of them deal in stelth camping or wild camping. they use a British army camo tarp called a Basha. they often lay it low and horozonaly staked down with the center lifted up to shed rain just above the ground. im thinking of following that phylosophy on my England trips only with a 10x10 camo safari cuz she's lighter and larger. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWXdipqBjc2hqKc
