I have this and the defender 13x10. Car camping with friends this is the ultimate way to go. Some 1100 battle cord with this tarp made the nasty storm go away. 2 SUVs ant one end and tie out the rest. 13x10 made a changing room. 8 of us in straight rain for 2 days with strong winds. Worth every penny.

Have many of these in different sizes and versions, even an old King Camo. Defenders can't be beat for total utility and dependability, Safari's are the choice for most applications I use. Great products and warranty, no cons except availability at times. Thanks Luke!

You're the man, Luke. I trust your reviews. I think the AquaQuest 15x15 is more my style. Tarpology is an interesting subject. I've experimented enough to know the tent tarp setup is my favorite but requires a lot of square footage-- a 10x10 being the least amount needed. So . . . I'm tempted. Very tempted, price being somewhat a consideration. I find it's better to pack a tarp either over or under the backpack for quicker access and deployment. If bad weather comes in you're ready.

About 4 years ago me and my girlfriend went to a family reunion and there was 12 of us and we had to camp. We bought a 16 person tent from Wal-Mart for 270 bucks and it still works good. It fit 4 queen mattresses and 4 twins and we had plenty of room. This trap would of been a great idea to put over the door and had a place to sit out of the sun and rain with plenty of room for us and 200 bucks is pretty cheap for a good tarp like this

Just a warning. If you are looking at these tarps on amazon...I was trying to buy a defender. Amazon defaulted me to the guide tarp 13x19. It costed more than the defender 13x19. TLDR: Make sure you are ordering the tarp you are intending to buy.

Yeah I picked up this exact tarp a few months back during the colder rainy season at the beginning of the SC year, I have to say I love it and Luke your recommendation about the Aquaquest brand from months back was my biggest drive to invest in this monster of a tarp. It has been incredible as a roof during the storm, a make shift shelter, a tent style shelter as well as just an all around awesome tarp. Thanks!

My 10*10 guide tarp ripped during a really bad wind storm, probably due to user error (the fabric ripped at the seems from the webbing). I contacted the warranty team, sent in some photos, and they replaced the tarp no problems. I added a small amount shock chord to my guys to make sure I'm not over tensioning them and have had no issues since. Used it in some heavy rain too and have always stayed dry.

I once bought a polytarp which claimed to be 12 ft x 8 ft according to the packaging. When opened it was much larger, 18 ft x 8ft. The original idea was for use as a windbreak between two tents. With the unexpected extra length, we were able to extend the windbreak to protect the campfire as well.

About 15 years ago my sister Maggie and I drove from Sacramento to Spokane WA to visit my brother. We had a barbecue with about 12 people and it started to rain. People were like oh s..t what are we going to do we’ll all get soaked. Maggie knew how to set up tarps and was a heavy equipment operator for the local utility district. All us big tough guys were standing around wondering what we were going to do but Maggie said nothing and walked over to her truck and pulled out a tarp about the size of Luke’s tarp and started tying it off to trees trucks bushes, anything she could find. Us big tough guys tried to help her but finally she said look guys I appreciate the help but you’re just screwing it up, let me do it by myself, and she did. It rained and all of us were under Maggie’s tarp the whole time, no problems. She was a feisty little Irish American woman, only weighed about 130 lbs, always carried her S&W 357 with her when she went camping, nobody messed with her and very few people won an argument with her. Unfortunately she died a while back from natural causes, she was something else.

In a flying V using poles i guess. Then you have to put 2 guy lines on the first pole to start off or it becomes like a balancing act. Once you stake out the sides you can go back to one guy line per pole.

If you think about it, it's worth every dime. It can be a cure for leaky tents....never use a fly again. So much space that not only is your tent guaranteed not to leak, you will have livable space for chairs and gear, also if your tent is all mesh but the fly causes condensation, you simply adjust the tarp to get airflow after leaving the fly at home. Anyone struggling with leaks and condensation/poor air flow could get some serious use out of this.

I think the great thing about it is it’s set up for a single ridge line along the long length and it looks like three ridge lines across the narrow end. That makes it easier of your only need it for a shelter with a smaller amount of square footage. Just gather up 1/4 or 2/4 of the unneeded material before running your lines …. It also answers some of your concerns about drying space by making an M shape and just having one end hung slightly higher than the other or even a MM (kinda squash the letters together.

Years ago, I thought the exact same thing. Until my 16’ x 16’ Noah tarp completely let me down in a downpour. At that point, you’re getting wet and there’s nothing you can do about it except put your raincoat on under the tarp. Fortunately it only lasted a couple of hours one morning at which point I balled it up, broke camp and when I got back to the truck, disposed of it in the nearest trashcan. I went right out and got an Aqua quest Safari. No regrets and it has never let me down.

Usually a tarp doesn't weigh as much (or more) than the sleeping structure, tent, hammock, what have you. I have several ultra light tarps that weigh less, but cost more than this. Of course, I would not use them as hard weather coverage unless forced to. I have an Aqua Defender 10x10 and it's part of my vehicle emergency kit and if I go car camping. That thing is bullet proof. Yes it's heavy, but sometimes you do need that extra protection.
