Creeks were Horse Highways back then and when water was high,even a horse would slip and dunk trying to cross. Rivers people travelled on raft to start new life and water high even tiny bend one would get moving to fast and run into the corner and lose everything. Homes robbed,maybe native American attack and Indians had no use so would chuck... My area native Held even in 1840''s, in spots they camped but prior it was their land...White eyes junk mattered not to them. In fields between Maryland and Penna,can find spots where settlers traded with Colonials and coppers were not shiny so would get tossed in the dirt.. Scavaging they would leave them and take the important materials. They wanted Hyde,salt,material, blankets The little they "use",sure would not waste trade items on them when can get themselves or in trading with other tribes who did not even value it when was within they're range. Gold and Silver was still all over back then,did not even need to be mined in many locations. There were more important items they wanted,were not caring about soft metal to them they could get to easy. Apparently in 1837 there was a banking system crisis. Many banks went under. The following from Wikipedia: "The Panic of 1837 was a financial crisis in the United States that touched off a major recession that lasted until the mid-1840s. Profits, prices and wages went down while unemployment went up. Pessimism abounded during the time. The panic had both domestic and foreign origins. Speculative lending practices in western states, a sharp decline in cotton prices, a collapsing land bubble, international specie flows, and restrictive lending policies in Great Britain were all to blame. On May 10, 1837, banks in New York City suspended specie payments, meaning that they would no longer redeem commercial paper in specie at full face value. Despite a brief recovery in 1838, the recession persisted for approximately seven years. Banks collapsed, businesses failed, prices declined, and thousands of workers lost their jobs." I suspect that what you found was either the private stash of an individual attempting to protect his money from going down with the local bank or a banker attempting to save some of a bank's specie (coin) from its depositors. Something must have happened to the person stowing the money otherwise he would have come back to retrieve it. Perhaps he was hung by his unhappy depositors. And it could have been the stash of a thief. All of this is speculation of course. Very interesting stuff.

I'm so torn between being head over heals for this sweet, funny man (and totally believing him), and being suspicious of him. A couple of his vids seem a little click-bate-y (the one with title having to do with skull - in front seat of truck under water?!) and then this one just seems so...SO damned lucky and he seems really calm about it (while also clearly selling or plugging the metal detector...which in and of itself is fine of course). Please tell me this guy with his fun, charming personality, love of birds and turtles lol and delightful, curious self is legit. :)

Someone mourned the loss of this bag of silver and maybe died because of it. Nice find
@midwestmatthew8 жыл бұрын
+Richard Baumeister - Perhaps. But the only people mourning my great-great grandfather's lost hoards of coins are his heirs. He died peacefully, secure in the knowledge that his jars of coins (mostly silver, but a few gold) were still safe where he'd buried them years before. Metal detecting wasn't a thing back in those days and his family left the farm after he died, so the coins were never found. My great-grandmother tried to find the location several decades later, but roads and landmarks had changed so much that she couldn't. So someone today has some farmland with some real treasure (probably) still buried on it. I kind of tried to find the old farm through public records a few years ago, but come to find out, it was rented and nobody now living knows who the landlord was. So much for that...guess I'll have to keep working for a living.

+Ian Patt All coins before the 1960s I believe (Probably wrong) Was all made of silver
@ianpatt27068 жыл бұрын
+Zak Thayer He did say his youngest coin was 1837, all the coins were silver, many were half dollars. If you compare the face value (with inflation) from 1837 to 2016 the half dollars would be worth $ 11.93. I don't know anyone who would toss almost $12.00 in a wishing well today, I doubt anyone would have in 1837 either, that was a days pay for some people. The coins are worth much more then that though, some are in excellent condition. In the US, sliver coins were circulated until 1964. From 1965-1970 half dollars contained 40% silver. Special silver coins have been made for proof sets and silver dollars are made again for collector's. 1\2 cent, pennies, 2 cent pieces and nickels were not sliver. ( 1942- 45 nickels were 35%silver) Half dimes, 20 cent pieces were silver. 3 cent pieces were 75 and 90% silver.
@TexasSheepdawg218 жыл бұрын
That kind of silver back in 1837 could have purchased a lot of firearms. It could have been blood money. Think of the military activity going on back in that period. That kind of silver could have been some sort of pay off. And whoever lost that cache or hid that cache didn't live long enough to retrieve it...... The possibilities of what that much silver could have been intended for staggers the imagination. And remember he found more later.
@midwestmatthew8 жыл бұрын
+Desi J Richert - It could potentially be much more recently lost than one might think. Lots of people collect old coins for investment or bartering purposes, and some of them do still hide them out and about. Silver can corrode quickly depending on conditions. It's entirely possible that cache was lost within fairly recent memory.
