Hey. thanks. I realize this video is old, but I just found it. I learn new things by watching you. I used to bottle hunt with my grandmother in Arkansas. We found all kinds of things. I even found an old Ford key - neat for a kid. You being up north from us you find different things. Thanks for the memories

Lots of stuff got/gets tossed into the river at RR bridges - by the RR! And on islands where there is a long river crossing!

Thanks to this video I increased my knowledge! I looked uyp these couplers because I wanted to see how they worked. They are called LINK & PIN couplers. And you are right VERY DANGEROUS device. If you look up Railroad Couplers on Wikipedia they have a great picture that shows how these actually worked. One of the issues you already know, there was not a standard and there was many styles. Caused railroad workers lots of time to use these. They were also weak as loads increased. THANKS!!

Beau ,the wheel piece was a brake wheel. When you separated the cars while moving them, the would spin the wheel to tighten the brakes to slow/stop the car where it was needed to re-attach to another train or what ever you needed done. My Great Grand Father was a railman for Great Northern RR back just after WW1. He lost his leg connecting cars together as they used a similar hookup still in the 30's

If you have a local scrapyard you can get some money from giving scrap iron to them. I don't know how much they give for each pound of iron but if you get enough you could make some money while having fun detecting. Thanks for the videos and keep them coming. More tips on what to look for would be much appreciated but I understand that you may not have the time to do all of this because I am sure you have a life beyond the videos. Thanks very much for introducing me to a new favorite hobby!!!

The Iron Wheel Piece that you had was used for a brake handle. If they unhooked a car they would crank the brakes down so the cars will not move. Keep up the good video's.

Great videos. I'm gonna try water hunting this summer. I use a Garrett AT Pro and love it. Seems like we have more problems with meth labs here in Missouri. These guys also like to wonder off into the woods for their "shake and bake" operations. If any of you come across something like a soda bottle or milk jug in the woods or next to the river with a hose attached please don't mess with it. Most of the time there is still dangerous liquids in the bottle. I'm not gonna go into detail of what it consists of, but please be safe. Good luck on future hunts and keep the vids coming.

That spring is part of one of the "trucks that contain the four wheels which support each end of a railroad car. To look at one of these "trucks" you will have a leading wheel, two springs then the trailing wheel. This configuration continues on both sides of the truck. Next time you are in an area where you can find abandoned railroad ties look on the tie for a square headed nail, (sometimes round) with a number raised up from the head of the nail. Back in the day, say 1899, they replaced a bad tie. They would put the tie in then nail in a number 99 nail. That way in thirty years they can check the nail and know how old the tie is. There must be literally millions of them out there. Good luck........hope you find some. Doug.

Couplers? Those kind are in Europe. The ones in US are like knuckles. One part would push in. Another train coupler would push it in, then release and they would lock together. I know this was in 2012, but knuckle couplers have been around pretty long.

A quick question: did you find any marked ones when you cleaned them up? I've only ever turned up a single marked coupling link, though the pins are often marked. Also - at 8:00 - are you sure that's not a different style of coupling pin? Looks too angular at the flanged end to be a broken link. Great finds, anyways!

Bridges equal derails equal broken train cars equal all those parts. Big pieces would've been rescued after the accident, small stuff thrown/left behind. Wooden rail cars get burned, rotted away, etc. Iron parts stay. Old iron seems to rust slower than modern iron. Those links indicate before the civil war, at least. Site anywhere near any CW battles?

If you were able to find these pins in the river, look around more, because it means that there might have been a derailment near the bridge, meaning there might be stuff like locomotive whistles or funnel, cowcatcher, steam measurer, a locomotive wheel, or more! SUBBED

+Notch8Films - Just ran across your comment here about detecting along the tracks. I am not sure of what the width of the right-of-way is, but you can be arrested as a suspected terrorist, the way people think today, if you are caught digging near the tracks, even if it is out in the weeds that grow along the tracks. It is best to know the width the right-of-way, how far it extends from the center of the railbed. Then you may need to have permission from the bordering land owner to hunt for artifacts on their land as well. In my state you can get into trouble for removing artifacts that are over twenty years old, sometimes those laws even apply to certain artifacts found on your own property. . . What settings do you use when in a heavy iron spot, on land, like a civil war camp or plantation home site? I used Discrim 1 with 25 iron discrim, but found I was missing small brass pieces. I wanted to know what you use? Do you leave iron audio on or off? Thx

Beau, How the heck did you carry all that iron out of there!? That metal wheel part you mentioned was for the braking mechanism on the back of the cars. My next question is how/why were those coupling links out there along the river? Pretty far from the bridge so I don't think they were thrown there! Maybe ballast for a barge or river boat? Thanks for posting another awesome video, I always enjoy watching and I seem to learn new stuff every time. Merry Xmas and HH, Dave.

Everytime I watch one of your videos you get rained out. The last 2 years have been really really dry here for us. Which sucks because the majority of the nations corn comes from this part of the country. Not to mention we had a fish kill on the Des Moines river that killed 50,000 fish. Kinda puts a damper on my summer fishing exploits. I don't wanna say that you can never have to much rain but, to much is better then not enough.
