*Update*: It’s been 8 months of daily use with zero issues. If I was going to build another shower, I would do this again. Side note: I would recommend using the Schluter brand thinset for installing the tiles. It costs a lot more but is really easy to work with and very sticky when installing the large tiles.

@@colchilibeck Good to know. We just leak tested and heard drips downstairs. I thought the prefabed inside corners and overlapping band would be enough -- clearly I was wrong. Headed to HD to get a bucket of this now! Thanks for the great video !!

Thank you for going through this. I am i the same boat right now with my bathroom and saw the aqua defense beside the kerdi stuff at Lowes and wondered if anyone has had success. Good job sir!

This is very interesting. I was just looking for information to see if I could apply the Mapai Aqua Defense over the Kerdi membrane and in the Q&A section on the Mapai website it said the Aqua Defense would not set up over a sheet membrane since the sheet membrane was not pourous and the Aqua Defense needed to be applied over a pourous material to set up. Now that I've seen your video and see that it really does, I think I will do this as well. Thanks for the video.

I am going to do the same. I used Kerdi pan, but traditional cement board which will need liquid waterproofing anyway, but was wondering if I should do a coat over the pan. Thanks for sharing

I’d still do Kedi band in the corners if the walls are durock.

We're doing a similar thing. After watching hundreds of hours of shower pan vids of Isaacs (Otile)... I plan to do a mortar bed pan with kerdi membrane using the unmodified thinset to adhere to the mortar bed. We also have our shower on the third floor of our house and are very worried about potential leaks... so i want the extra insurance of the aquadefense roll on layer. Thanks for the research you did as this supports my hypothesis that this might work. Also btw we're using the Flow Effects drain. What type drain did you put in?
@colchilibeck11 ай бұрын
Ours is still holding up with no leaks and I would do the same thing again. We used the Schluter drain.

Any update on how it is performing? I have the same situation and everybody says don't mix the products. I get that neither company will recommend it and I saw your other video on how well it sticks. Wondering how it is holding up? I realize it has only been a short time. Thanks for posting.

So far so good! We have been using the shower daily for 2 months now with no issues! I would recommend using the Schluter thinset as it bonded to the AquaDefence nicely.

@@markv8832 That was exactly my reasoning as well! The one thing I would have done differently is put the AquaDefense all the way to the ceiling. I had half a pail remaining and should have just done it all. Good luck with your first shower!

After your second coat, where the floor meets the wall, the still drying area really sticks out. The trouble with that is, it means that that area was the membrane was applied thicker than elsewhere. It will dry at a different rate, shrinking, which will result in cracks which will defeat the whole purpose. You would've been much better served had you put on three thin coats where the floor meets the wall than two thick coats. Luckily, it is an insurance coat an if you did the Kerdi properly, you should be OK.

@@colchilibeck thank you! I am going with the same approach. I understand I am running kerdi warranty but having this shower in 2nd floor, and being a DIY’er I want to guarantee I cover every corner
@colchilibeck2 жыл бұрын
@@bec5gtr my reasoning was the same. I also felt that, because I’m not a professional contractor, if there was a problem I am more than certain kerdi would have found a way to not honour any warranty. Not saying that they would be doing that on purpose, but there must’ve been something that I didn’t do to their liking. So really I had nothing to lose.
