Excellent Marianne, it is only a matter of practice , regarding this course i don't like to sound big headed but because we used to own a speed boat and i used to water skiing a lot, a man in the water was a common thing, i am talking late 60 early 70, so the person in the water used to hold the ski upright so he can be seen, and also going round the person in the water to give him the line to catch.

well done. Here in Germany we need separate licenses for Inland-waterways and Coastal cruising. The tests are quite similar, but the coastal test is a bit more work. You have to pass a theoretical test, with navigations and multiple choice questions. These are different for both licenses. then you have to pass a practicle test where you have to hold course, turn in three actions, man over board maneuver, tie slip in, slip out and so on...an you have to show 6 out of 8 different knots. Without license we are limited to 15 HP-engines...and of course we need another test for VHF inland and another for VHF coast and another test for using pyros...Germany, the country of law and order :-) ...sorry for any mistakes --- just a bloody german :-)

Again, well done Marianne, took me ages to see the float device when practicing “person” overboard in the films. Even dropping anchor isn’t as simple as it sounds. Having watched these you would be mad to get a boat and just go at it without some form of instruction / training first. You took to it like the proverbial duck to water!

I did my PB2 and PB Advanced and found the RYA course to be a joke. On the advanced course I was with people I wouldn't want to be in the same ocean with but they all "passed with flying colours" even thought some had no comprehension of chart plotting, secondary ports, or even how to control a 5m RiB. It made a mockery of the whole course. No one failed.

Congratulations Marianne! Just a quick point, on your "Man Overboard", you turned anticlockwise initially which caused your spotter to take their eyes off the target. Apologies if I sound picky but if you can maintain visual contact with your target all the better.

Now we pulling our hair out trying to choose what berthing packing with MDL if you have any advice for newbies in this department, we would welcome it. We live 2 hours from the coast and plan to use most weekends weather permitting. We love your videos and find them super helpful and informative.

When rescuing man overboard, would it be better to approach facing into the wind? As this is a constant force on the bow which you can increase/decrease the throttle into, rather than approaching from the side where the wind may disrupt the course of the boat.
@AQUAHOLIC
@AQUAHOLIC 3 жыл бұрын
No because as soon as you stop, you'll be blown away from the casualty and you'll be approaching with the highest part of the boat.

Not really. Being side to shields the casualty from the prevailing sea state, waves wind etc should they be unconscious / injured and dont forget your engine is off as the prop makes a good floating human blender.

depend not only by the wind but also from waves and sea drag , usually less dangerous is upwind from the side not the bow or stern, steering gently to avoid propellers in a large circle

Good luck with the course I just picked up 2 things the instructor didn't say 1 was with a person overbroad you should turn into the side they fell off so the prop doesn't hit them and 2 wasn't sure but did he say you should come from down wind of the person in the water so they drift on to you to me it looked like you was drift on to them.

There's this term that I keep hearing being thrown about often called "chine lock". Anyone care to define that in beginner's terms, please?
@foxamongdeli6745
@foxamongdeli6745 3 жыл бұрын
Ok, Ill do the best I can. The chime is the ‘ridge’ or ‘v’ along the centre of the boat which keeps it stable. When you initiate a turn, the chime digs in, grips the water and allows the boat to turn. Chime lock occurs when the chime does not ‘dig in’ or ‘grip’ the water, essentially resulting in the boat continuing at that speed and direction, no matter the engine input. Which can very obviously result in a very dangerous situation if you are steering to avoid something for example. It can often happen if the hull of the boat is poor designed or if specific circumstances align resulting in the water aerating - similar to when the propeller cavitates.
